- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Don't worry. I won't change the focus too much. Still, I want to keep in touch with the recent trends in web design, and there's no denying that CSS and XHTML is important these days.
- rk_cr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6...And due to the Digg effect, will soon be back offline again.
- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If anyone cares, my girlfriend is throwing a launch party for Styleboost/me right now. We're having a ball, all four of us; Eva, me, Solveig (http://www.flickr.com/photos/johanbak/sets/72057594137498327/) and Hugo Chavez (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4555300.stm). Solveig just passed out, and the pink champagne I'm drinking is sure to send me in the same direction pretty soon.
Stay tuned for some photos on flickr tomorrow:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/johanbak/ - settsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's eye-pleasing... if you don't intend to read it.
Repeat after me: "Gray-on-gray is not for text." (I'll leave the mondegreen comments to someone else...) - Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You're very welcome! Thanks for caring about the redesign/relaunch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Excellent new look and features. I hope it still remains focused on non-css design too, otherwise it will become yet another css gallery.
- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right that there are a lot of design galleries online these days. What I'm trying to do, and have been doing for the past five years with Styleboost, is to combine all different areas of web design into one bag.
Not only standards-compliant sites get linked (take a look at the size of the "popup", "fullscreen" or "flash" tags here: http://styleboost.com/tags/ ), not only flash based sites get linked. I've emphasized CSS and XHTML in the new version to shift the focus a few degrees towards standards based design/development.
Take a look through the database to see if you agree with me or not. - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what are you doing on digg? go party :)
- MonsterMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good to see it back!
- EamonnMurphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Welcome back Style Boost. Its become very boring looking at CSS gallery's online which don't seem to have any standards for quality design or innovation like the selection of hand picked sites which you feature on your site. keep up the good work and I like the new features also.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good to hear! i have really appreciated the quality of styleboost over the years. Keep it up ! :-)
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's a really nice gallery!
- caliform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. As a web designer, I feel like information architecture and laws of contrast haven't been followed closely, resulting in a confusing and unpleasant expirience. I think the previous layout emphasised the link content, instead of being overwhelming. The website aesthetic now becomes primary, not because it's intended, but because it's preventing you from properly reading a website.
- shardex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent to see Styleboost is back - I've been waiting months to check out the new design. Styleboost is an excellent resource for design inspiration.
- Jram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW - keep up the great work! Styleboost is my favorite site of its kinda bar none.
- cricke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1styleboost is hosted on dreamhost. they have pretty good servers. at least what I heard.
- MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very great website. I have already found some beautiful website designs that have given me some ideas on how to go about in webdesign.
- monkeyman08854, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Nike Golf site is really beautiful. Good combination of music and design. Excellent gallery!
- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you, Eamonn. I try to make Styleboost.com stand out from the crowd by being "arrogant" or at least by focusing on quality instead of quantity.
- Blazeix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it is not down yet, but it is really, really, slow. It's probably only a matter of time before we need this:
http://www.duggmirror.com/design/Styleboost_finally_relaunches/ - GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It might just be my connection, but I'm having a real hard time access/navigating the new page... it's loading WAY slow, and as far as i can tell it's not a back-end thing... I'm on a campus computer, pages get served pretty swiftly.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hooray it's back!
ok, How long before someone steals the design?
Last relaunch, the photography of that tunnel was on a couple of sites within days...
=) - blueangel5383, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good for inspirations too.. this gallery have different websites featured as other ones.. always good to have another perspective... plus it's got tags that most others don't. GREAT JOB!
- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Due to the comments about the grey on grey, I will try with darker text soon. I agree with this criticism, though only to a certain extent. I will also be trying with an implementation of the old huge header photos, though perhaps only as an option for registered users.
There are two reasons for not giving access to the old site while the new one was in the works; 1) I wanted to feel pressurized to finish the new version, and 2) laziness on my behalf. - Mortiferous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And now Digg can take it back down. ;)
Edit: rk_cr beat me to it ! - kingjokin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Swwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeett!! Ive been useing styleboost for inspiration since i started designing years ago.. thanks Styleboost you are the best!
- stevelevi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love it!!!!! So soft, great use of colors, easy navigation. I use this site like reference since december 2001.... thanx for inspire my brain!!
- briyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely agree about the lack of readability. Some more contrast would be nice amidst the fading greys and blue-greys.
- Chex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like this idea! They need more bandwith tho.
- flipme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't read the text.. it's to "grey"..
- Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You'll understand how cool this party is when you see the photos tomorrow. ;-) It's way cool. That's how cool it is.
- heinous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UGH. Dreamhost is the most unreliable hosting I've ever had. The servers have been going down two or three times a month lately. Just check out dreamhoststatus.com if you don't believe me. Don't even think of relying on them for email services.
- DJSdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yet another online design gallery. How is this really needed? Standards-based design galleries were needed back a few years ago when big companies weren't on-board with web standards yet (XHTML/CSS) but now that they're all redesigning with standards in mind, what purpose do MORE galleries serve?
- Jram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the navigation, icons and layout. I've always loved styleboost link choices. Perhaps a lighter background and slightly darker text for you subheadings would calm the grey haters? (I would agree BTW, too much grey). I woudn't add more color, I love how the thumbnails pop and dominate the design.
Also I noticed you closed the site while a new one was in the works. I'm curious why you would not have a click through to the older version. I missed the old site for a month or so. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too bad that quite a lot of these sites suffer from the cliche-filled "Web 2.0" look. Gradients, pastels, reflections... See this previous front-page submission for reference (and hillarity):
