- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+78Photography was invented around 1840. So here we are in 2006 and some "news" organization publishes a story like this WITHOUT A SINGLE PICTURE.
That, folks, is a failure. - Naruto28, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39Found a photo of it here: http://www.neatorama.com/2006/03/17/royal-oak-intermediate-schools-roller-coaster/
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26The closest my school came to this was the time we got RED construction paper to glue our macaroni to. That was a day of days, my friends.
- Hawk4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17What the hell is wrong with you people? It's not SUPPOSED to give people rides. It's an education project, dammit, not a new themepark.
This, my friends, is what education should be like. ***** DO something. Build a roller coaster, participate in an archeological dig, whatever. It's a shame that this is so rare to be news--schools should be doing things like this all over the place. Kids don't learn much sitting on their asses in a classroom. Hell, even if they learn nothing from doing a project like this, at least they have a sense of accomplishment when it's done, and maybe they learned a little about what teamwork and cooperation can do, and made a few new friends. +digg, this is great. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14What a poorly designed newspaper website. They've got a bunch of pictures but dont show them on the story page for some unknown reason.
http://lang.sgvtribune.com/socal/gallery2/?folder=news/031606_coaster - jessejanderson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17he said "around 1840."
Don't be an ass. - jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You guys really are missing the hole point, It is sad to see so much ignorance.
This is a project designed to promote teamwork and create skills that will help those kids in the future. If you read the article, they are going to test with an empty cart. Plus they are paired with teachers for How many of the critics have done anything by the time they where 14, most of the people on this forum are not even that age for the impression I get. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Now that was just plain unkind. You should have at least masked her email with a % or something...
"esther.chou%sgvn[UBUNTU].com minus linux distro" would have been nice. - MrDolomite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13agreed, no pic = lame.
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Heh, a lot of people are asking how the car is supposed to stay on the track.
It's not supposed to be actually ridden. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Tomorrow's front page Digg: "135 8th graders killed by poorly built Roller Coaster"
- calebb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's a 1/4 scale roller coaster... you'd need a 1/4 scale student if this was actually going to be ridden ;-)
- gambl0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It takes an UNMANNED car, geminitojanus.
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, I'm wondering how it stays on the track as well. Oh well, the special kid in the back of the class can try it first.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Boing Boing has a tiny image of it: http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/17/eighth_graders_build.html
- errer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It doesn't hold PEOPLE, you silly bastards.
It's 1/4th scale and functional, but functional doesn't mean the function is to carry kids! - awhite2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Read the article again! They said that they were going to launch an UN-MANED car on the roller coaster tonight at 7pm. It isn't designed for humans, it's a big model.
- ke5crz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone take into consideration it may have not have been finished yet?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shame on SGV tribune for not supplying a photo with this story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2maybe its for remote controlled cars?????????
- jjarmoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Makezine.com had a story about this too, and there's includes a pic -- http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/03/roller_coaster_built_in_school.html
- bytebreeder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Some pictures:

Like that's going to stop an 8th grader.... they basically are 1/4 scale already ;-) - XxUNDEROATHxX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1any pictures would be greatly appreciated....
- ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meet your future carni workers.....
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read the story before you comment or at least the first few comments... it's for an unmanned car to test, not for an actual person (aka learner) to ride on.
- 7ate9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2With a roller coaster in the gym where are the kids going to play dodgeball? Its no wonder so many of todays youth are obese..... neat project none-the-less.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah that's the best my school had
- ripter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't see any kind of guiding on the 'track' it looks like some flat boards, hows the cart supposed to stay on the track?
- Bananas21ca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Than why would the school waste $5000 on making that and taking up the entire gym?
- journeyman101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OK--Now that someone was kind enough to post a picture, I am wondering, how this car is gonna stay on the track. It seems very flat on top with no slot or guide for the car. Anyone else notice anything that might keep the car from falling off? Nevertheless, very cool project and it looks like a lot of time and effort went into this. Now we need a mov of the test run when they do it :D
- Zeerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was gonna say that myself, about having the special kid ride first, but it seemed kind of out of place. funny nonetheless
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't it have been more fulfilling if they built a smaller coaster that people could have actually ridden on? It would also have been more educational because they would have had to make the thing safe enough to ride. This may have taught them a lot, but in the end, it still seems like an incomplete project to me.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that schools are stepping out of the mold and I _am_ impressed. Now is the time to think about how to push it to the next plateau. - rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, I don't want to read about the ***** project rollercoaster. I want to see the goddamn picture.
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It said they raised the money from fund raising etc and materials were donated by local companies so its not exactly a waste on the schools part. I'm sure they made it safe enough for a single unladen cart to go round. Its not going to be taking a large weight.
- rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks man, I know there are images, I am just a lazy news reader and would prefer for an image to be on the page that covers the story.
- Veretax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you to the folks who posted pics of the thing. Nice... +dugg!
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The point of the Roller Coaster is to learn through hands-on education. No, they are going to ride the roller coaster, but I'm sure they learned a lot about planing, executing, and finalizing a major project (this one happens to be a roller coaster). I imagine that the school's goal is to make the kids successful in life by teaching them these "soft" skills and when they go to college/technical school they will learn their respective "hard" skills. This is where early education is headed today...gone are the days of pure rote memorization, it is all about inferring and drawing conclusions and analyzing.
Either way, the article does mention an unmanned car, which I would like to see pictures of that. My best guess is that the car has a wheel on the top, side and/or bottom of the edge of the wooden platform. If not, then these pictures aren't of the finished product. Sounds like this is where I would want to go to school. - jervana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Oops - Neatorama's growing popularity has snarked the server. Please stay tuned while we try to fix the problem."
digg effect. - nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it's not ridden it still has to stay on the track, otherwise all of the "track" after the first turn was a big waste of time and money.
- CoconutKC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No digg, how can you NOT have a picture with THAT story?
- calebb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry to repost my comment from above, but...
"It's a 1/4 scale roller coaster... you'd need a 1/4 scale student if this was actually going to be ridden ;-)" - KiltedMile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seems this has been done before, http://www.gelitin.net/mambo/index.php?set_albumName=otto_volante01&option=com_gallery2&Itemid=48&include=view_album.php
(From comments at http://www.neatorama.com/2006/03/17/royal-oak-intermediate-schools-roller-coaster/) - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually.. there are seven pictures...
- EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Well they both look like a bit of a death trap. I dont know how the hell the cart stays on the 8th graders one. I like how they have pictures of the kids making it look pretty while the adults are doing the labor. Maybe show the kids working on something other than a "craft" project? But still it looks like it would be something fun to do.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2""It's a 1/4 scale roller coaster... you'd need a 1/4 scale student if this was actually going to be ridden ;-)""
I'm glad everyone posted this. Because you know, things never fall down because they are poorly constructed. Tacoma Narrows should definitely not even be on anyone's mind.
Load + toothpicks with an index card on top = [broken toothpicks | fallen card | fallen card breaking toothpicks | falling load].
So really, the whole "135 Students Die Standing Near Home-made Rollercoaster" headline makes perfect sense.
But don't listen to me, my engineering degree is only in Computer Engineering. I never had those silly "structure analysis" classes. - agarc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No pic, no digg.
Decent idea, lame execution. Who's learning what here? And it doesn't even work? Being linked on digg, I was expecting more. - TheKackler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The build isn't about getting it right the first time. It is about how not acting as a team will really destroy a project. So if some teamwork went bad and they had bad planning, they have a messed up coaster. Let them fail and learn from their mistakes.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pictures from the newspapers website
http://lang.sgvtribune.com/socal/gallery2/index.asp - DrGonzo1184, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That would be physically impossible with out a method of propulison.
