Stairs Bookcase Actually Makes Me Want to Move to London
gizmodo.com — Here's a great idea for anyone who loves books and doesn't have enough apartment space or a Kindle: a "secret staircase" made of English oak, lined with books left, right and center, leading to a loft bedroom in a Victorian 1898 apartments block

- squishee, on 02/21/2008, -75/+20It's sad that the first thing I thought when I saw this was "I need to do this for my DVDs." Books FTL.

- whatthefu, on 02/21/2008, -2/+72You are brain for the lose?

- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1Maybe he's just a big "Revenge of the Living Dead" fan
- edwartica, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2I could take issue with the use of the word epic in that comment, but I won't. Instead I'm inserting several grammatical errors in this sentence. :)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fyngyrz/582936293/ - richbleak, on 02/21/2008, -4/+1This debunks the theory that reading books somehow bolsters ones ability to use language effectively. Yes, the process of reading will obviously improve ones ability to read, however, the assertion that this must take place during recreational time as opposed to watching TV or movies serves only to bolster the ego of self-important tools like KraftDinner101. I read enough during the day and while on the internet that I feel perfectly content in watching the damn movie and skipping the book.

- prophetpimp, on 02/21/2008, -10/+2I don't need these for my DVD's because i keep all my DVD Rips on the PC. Physical Medium FTL. Although i would love to do this for a Comic Book Collection.
- piesforyou, on 02/21/2008, -1/+16Hard drive failure FTW!
- OverlordXenu, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3It's called RAID for redundancy and off-site backups in case my house ignites.
At least, that's what I do.
(I also have my DVD's and CD's stored elsewhere.)- Namco, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Whaddya work for the Library of Congress or something?
- Namco, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Here's an idea, instead of dealing with RAID and physical offsite storage, just get renter's insurance. You can replace your collection in the unlikely event of a full house fire.
- BearinG, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Do you live in the national archive facilities?
- prophetpimp, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Thats the beauty of sharing. I got my exact collection replicated with 2 other friends with whom i share content.so if my HDD blows i can get it back from them.
- OverlordXenu, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3It's called RAID for redundancy and off-site backups in case my house ignites.
- balloonenstein, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4I bet you'll love not having a physical media when that hard drive fails on you... Unless you have them backed up somewhere else. If that is the case, touche good sir.
- mykalimba, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4After ripping your DVD's and CD's to your PC, you would, of course, back them up. I hear that writable DVD's and CD's make good storage media.

- rasterbator, on 02/21/2008, -2/+14How about a server farm staircase?
- noahhoward, on 02/21/2008, -2/+6The heat would cook you before you made it to the bedroom. If you survived the heat, the fact that you were nerdy enough to build a staircase to house your servers that leads to your bedroom would cause your date to turn back before you to to the bedroom.
- BearinG, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2If you want the upper servers to run badly..
- lex0nyc, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3My first thought was "don't throw up on the vertigo stairs!"
(because of the extreme wide angle of the first shot) - LogicBomB, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3I HIGHLY enjoy dvd's and watching tv but nothing compares to some of the stories I've read back in my book-reading days. My only complaint with my life right now is it's too busy to fit in things such as reading.
- jgzman, on 02/21/2008, -6/+3This may be the most offensive thing I've ever read on digg. I can't digg you down enough.
- ninja0, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1LOL er... how?
- Calcularius, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1That's stupid. Most books are *NOT* on your computer, yet.
Go watch 'Idiocracy', since you're so into your DVDs.- IllBeBack, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1Idiocracy was one of the stupidest movies EVER. EVER!
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/21/2008, -4/+3I really don't take any pleasure from reading at all. I do it only for school, never for entertainment.

- yokozuka, on 02/21/2008, -5/+54I swear, this apartment would make me go to London. But then you look at the $1,500/week rent for a 70m2 apartment and, thank you, but no thank you.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6I don't think you'll find that £750PCW is the average.
- OverlordXenu, on 02/21/2008, -11/+7Not to mention the totalitarianism.

- MonkCanatella, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Dugg for using logic.
- dillhole, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1So that works out at about £40 does it?
- mr100percent, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1That's about 750 square feet, and I wound up paying $1600 for 350 square feet in New York City for a studio. This is a better bargain (which is a surprise since London is more expensive than NYC)
- troydoogle7, on 02/21/2008, -19/+183I nearly fell off my chair when I realized that you guys don't have this in America. Come to London, every house has one....
Finally , you understand why James Bond is british now?- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -9/+138I thought it was because Ian Fleming wrote him that way. Now I see it's because apparently people in London live in such tiny homes that they have to line their staircases with books instead of actually having separate book cases.
- gmprunner, on 02/22/2008, -5/+2Buuuuurn! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
- Amazetbm, on 02/21/2008, -0/+22It would be a lot cheaper to just get a carpenter to install it in my house get the supplies from Home Depot and do it myself. London has the second most expensive cost of living in the world.
- cmuwriter, on 02/21/2008, -5/+44First we would have to get our countrymen to ***** read books. Which would be hard to do.
- mearom, on 02/21/2008, -10/+5NOT SO SECRET PORN STASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- stillasleep00, on 02/21/2008, -3/+12Shut up, NASCAR's on!!!!
- OverlordXenu, on 02/21/2008, -9/+7I have a home library.
- bxblox, on 02/21/2008, -5/+2Id rather buy a book shelf
- ggacid, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5We typically have enough wall space to either put up book shelves or build them on the wall.
How do you go about getting the book on the TOP shelf back by the door without falling and breaking your neck?- goldfishey, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1small folding step ladder. cheaper then buiding an admittedly awesome looking book-stairwell.
- saymawa, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2don't put books on the top shelf back by the door.
- blup3ace, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2I understand your shock. Many american households are now turning wall spaces for booksheves into spaces for bigger and bigger TVs.
- DuckofDeath11, on 02/22/2008, -4/+1...as if books have some kind of intrinsic value. books are just a medium for the communcation of ideas. TV does a better job. OBSOLETE'D
- DuckofDeath11, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1My boyfriend accidentally posted this under my name. I just wanted to point out that *he's* the asshole, not me. Thanks for your time.

- barnis, on 02/21/2008, -3/+30so how much a month do those books cost in rent?
- simplicityiskey, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Good point. Depending on the location of that flat in London, someone could be shelling out some serious money for that little tiny room to store their books.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/21/2008, -2/+2It would probably be better if people just went to the library to rent books.
- electricdragon, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4I hope you mean "borrow", instead of "rent".
- KraftDinner101, on 02/21/2008, -4/+8That apartment doesn't look all that small. That person just needs a lot more book space than most.
- yokozuka, on 02/21/2008, -3/+570m2 is not small? I think it is quite. This apartment doesn't look small because it's very well distributed. Great work on the architects part.
- Otto, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1370 square meters = ~750 square feet, which is not particularly small for a one bedroom apartment in the US.
- AndrewJC, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10Hell, my apartment is 530 square feet. I do just fine, except for the lack of storage (i.e. cabinets) and counter space in the kitchen.
- prophetpimp, on 02/21/2008, -3/+4I live with 4 other family members in a 800Sq feet house. It might sound small to you Americans But when you get use to it you actually will prefer Smaller Apartments.
- tattertech, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Actually I won't. I've lived in small apartments. I prefer actually having space. Hell my 1,000ish sq ft condo is way too small these days.
- EtherGnat, on 02/21/2008, -1/+5The main reason we need space is to store our crap. I'm slowly coming to the realization that all that "stuff" I had to have is just complicating my life, I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I'm not talking about living like a monk, but damn I have too much crap. There was originally a point to this comment--I'm not sure what happened to it.
- noahhoward, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Agreed, my wife and I rented a small cottage in England for our honeymoon and it made me remember that I never used to 'need' 2000 Sq ft.
- Otto, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1800 square feet for 4 people? Holy crap. My one bedroom condo is bigger than that, and I consider it rather confining. Can't have more than 6-8 people over for a party, for one thing.
- tattertech, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Actually I won't. I've lived in small apartments. I prefer actually having space. Hell my 1,000ish sq ft condo is way too small these days.
- Tenhundfeld, on 02/21/2008, -2/+0It depends if there's any square footage outside of that loft. My house has a nice 500 sq ft loft, similar to the one pictured here even down to the skylight. I cannot stand spending much time up there. Those pitched ceilings always leaning over me, and if I stand up anywhere but the middle 1/3 of the room, I hit my head. It's a nice place to store things, but living in such conditions would drive me crazy.
- Otto, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1370 square meters = ~750 square feet, which is not particularly small for a one bedroom apartment in the US.
- KraftDinner101, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2Most homes (depending on where you live) are only about 2,000 square feet. So yea, it's not that small.
- yokozuka, on 02/21/2008, -3/+570m2 is not small? I think it is quite. This apartment doesn't look small because it's very well distributed. Great work on the architects part.
- hoppdawg, on 02/21/2008, -6/+125You want to move to London you saw a picture of a narrow bookcase with stairs?
// ¿como?- jd72277, on 02/21/2008, -0/+20lets see, move to London or hire a carpenter... which seems easier, cheaper, and more immediate?
- mattxb, on 02/21/2008, -0/+28Don't listen to these naysayers, pack up your books and follow your dream! Ahoy! To England! Land of book staircases!
- kymike, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3And what's with those alternating-width steps? Is that an example of (dark) British humor or something?
- EtherGnat, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7It's an extremely steep staircase, almost like a ladder. The alternating widths make it easier to lift your foot to the next step left-right-left-right without hitting your foot on the stairs.
- electricdragon, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1They looked like tabs on office folders to me.
- goldfishey, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6yes. yes it is.
or you can read the article and discover that the wide bits are so u have a comfortable-ish place to park your backside while you thumb through books. - kymike, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1Just to clarify: There was an implicit smiley-face at the end of my original comment above. ;-)
I get that the alternating steps have a purpose; I just think they are potentially hazardous ;-)
- EtherGnat, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7It's an extremely steep staircase, almost like a ladder. The alternating widths make it easier to lift your foot to the next step left-right-left-right without hitting your foot on the stairs.
- DreKor, on 02/21/2008, -2/+34That's an impressive use of space, and I'm usually all for skylights, but books and sunlight don't play well together. If you keep the same books in therefor an extended period of time, you're going to get a lot of sun damage.
- gbarger, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that when I read about the skylight.
- st0ney, on 02/21/2008, -1/+21In London I don't think that getting too much sunlight is a big concern
- Calcularius, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2Most modern glass for windows has IR and UV blocking properties.
With the new windows in my house, sunny spots get mildly warm, where they used to get very hot.
I would still put the rare volumes away, though. - smurfsahoy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3It appears to me that the shelves are pretty deeply recessed. I don't think there'd be much sunlight on books while not being read.
- adrianmonk, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Yes, look at the picture where the viewer is looking up the stairs toward the skylight. You can see that they have chosen the angle so that no direct sunlight is hitting the books.
Here's the URL for the picture I'm referring to: http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/leoniestair/100076 ...

- davidwasman, on 02/21/2008, -7/+65Yet again Gizmodo, one of Gawker Media's sites(including other sites like jalopnik, gawker, i09, valleywag, kotaku, etc...) , is blogspamming.
Not to mention the site they stole it from a better site: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/house-tours/at- ...
Last week alone Gawker Media had no less than 6 of their sites on Digg's front page at once.- schizogony, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1I'm only familiar with Gizmodo, Jalopnik and Kotaku. Thanks for introducing me to i09 and Valleywag! I just bookmarked 'em.

- JeffD, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1Do you run a competing site or something? I keep seeing you spamming anti gawker media rubbish over and over again. Ive read quite a few interesting articles linked from digg on their site... why the hate?
- MonkCanatella, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Because they spam Digg. It's abuse of the system. Not to mention that this was stolen from the aforementioned site.

- Shiner6, on 02/21/2008, -2/+91You don't have to live in London to build that. I'm pretty sure it could be built anywhere.
- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -2/+29No..no, it's an London, England only thing and Ninjas will get you if you try it anywhere else.
- hoppdawg, on 02/21/2008, -3/+9True
- Grimdotdotdot, on 02/21/2008, -0/+17There is actually a ninja in the first photo of the stairs.
- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -2/+2Where? OH! I see him now (slash!) ACK!
- edwartica, on 02/21/2008, -2/+3Ahh, but I'm a pirate, so I'm not afraid of some pansy ninja.
- stx666, on 02/21/2008, -0/+0It's a North London thing, South London is bigger

- LoudMusic, on 02/21/2008, -6/+45"Stairs Bookcase Actually Makes Me Want to Move to London"
I suggest you either find a better reason to move to London or just build your own stairs bookcase where ever you are now. If I were English I would find it offensive that of all the wonderful things they have to offer, it was a bookcase that enticed you.- tattertech, on 02/21/2008, -12/+5Well.... the food sure isn't going to do it.
- qwerty121, on 02/21/2008, -0/+19Fish And Chips FTW
- nbcaffeine, on 02/21/2008, -0/+15I recall seeing recently that london had one of the best food scenes in the world. I think it had to do with the combination of all the cultures that live there. Also, fish and chips ftw x 2
- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4When I was in London back in the 80s I used to love to go to Sea Shells Fish and Chips.
- trauch46, on 02/22/2008, -2/+0woah woah woah... nobody gives a *****.
- MacParrot, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Are you sure? You checked everywhere and nobody gave you *****?
- trauch46, on 02/22/2008, -2/+0woah woah woah... nobody gives a *****.
- Ramble, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4Compare English food, and all the other food because we live in a vastly more multicultural society than America, to McD's hamburgers and fries?
- tattertech, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1LOL. comments are hilarious. London has a great food scene for everything but the English food (fish and chips aside).
If you want multicultural food options and tons of fusions, there's this little place called the US... Happens to be pretty much built around that.
- NoozeHound, on 02/21/2008, -2/+3A bookcase? It would be a change. So often they come simply for the benefits...
- mynameiscal, on 02/21/2008, -0/+14Yeah, it's not JUST bookcases that we Brits have over here...we've also got Doctor Who.
That's about it though.- surKaz, on 02/21/2008, -0/+16Doctor Who?
- joshuabowers, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Bah: You export that. (Although, it would be neat to step into a toy store anywhere and get figurines, I guess.)
- Ramble, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4You're forgetting Red Dwarf.
- danielman94, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2 Doctor Who comes on Idaho or Oregon(can't remember which) Public Television on Saturdays :-)
- Adrianne, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Tempting offer, but doesn't death and destruction follow everywhere in his wake? I'm not sure I am up for having my face erased.
On the other hand I do like Jellybabies. - turbojugend23, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1I'd like to see you try and get a building permit for that thing here in the states. Ain't gonna happen.
- netzdamon, on 02/21/2008, -4/+2Offensive? What a ***** bitch. You needed to be kicked in the ass a bit more as a child.
- tattertech, on 02/21/2008, -12/+5Well.... the food sure isn't going to do it.
- lensman00, on 02/21/2008, -6/+26Nice shelving idea, but the stairs themselves are a terrible design, with those cutesy staggered cutouts. Great way to break your neck, especially in the dark and/or if you aren't familiar with them.
Some things are plain for a reason. Stairs being among them.- saska, on 02/21/2008, -4/+9My first thought upon seeing them was, "Try to get a girl up those stairs drunk."
- hermslice, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4the steps are designed that way so you can sit and pick a book
- smurfsahoy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Yes, we all understand. That doesn't make it a good idea, or safe.
- Fludd777, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3It seems like they were designed like that so that you don't have to move your foot too far to reach the edge of the step. I'm just a dumb American however
- CTK14A, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Maybe, but combine this idea with this...

They're not terribly dangerous with decent handrails, but these ones are in Oak, which would really hurt you if you fell. Pine would have been a kinder choice, if not so aesthetically pleasing.
- 1AirMilePt, on 02/21/2008, -2/+17do you remove your shoes when you enter?
cause or else, think of all the water, and/or snow that would damage all these books
:(- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -1/+16Well thankfully it never rains in London

- JeffD, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Why would you wear your shoes inside your home?

- nbcaffeine, on 02/21/2008, -2/+12if you read them, why can they not also be decorations?
- asa400, on 02/21/2008, -2/+3I agree with nbcaffeine. Some books are works of art in both a visual and literary sense. The first example that comes to mind is The Curse of Lono. Steadman's artwork and Thompson's writing make it a book to be treasured and displayed.
- simplicityiskey, on 02/21/2008, -4/+5Looks cool, but it doesn't make me want to move to London. For the price of that flat and the remodel, you can have a mansion in America and store as many books as you want in it.
- Cayfox, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4Face it, if you live a stylish cosmopolitan lifestyle like the occupants of this flat, you're not going to want to live in any part of America where that kind of dough will get you a mansion.
- bxblox, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1For that amount you could get a nicer place in a big city as well. I guess id have to see the rest of the place.

- Falldog, on 02/21/2008, -2/+2I like the alternating tab steps. The only thing that sucks about these stairs is that I'd have to buy books of a uniform size.
- mattbatt, on 02/21/2008, -2/+6wow those books are going to get dirty real quick and kicked alot. I maybe would put some sort of door over the ones nearest the feet.
- henhouse0, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2That is awesome! Now I want to have one of those. :D
Better keep the kids out, they would be falling all the time...- lfroker, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3Its a ***** staircase. How often do your kids fall down the stairs?
- Ramble, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Only when I push them down it.
- lfroker, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1HAHA touche.

http://nynerd.com/stairs-drawers/ - TobyDumb, on 02/21/2008, -24/+3Books suck.
- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -1/+17It isn't often that a digg name fits so well. Well played

- cmuwriter, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3It's all fun and games until someone catches their foot on the bottom of one of those steps and fall, and bust's their chin on some hard oak planks.
- chrisaug18, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3That could happen on any staircase
- mykalimba, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Not on a staircase made with soft marshmallow planks.
- ricksite, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Not every staircase has odd shaped planks.
- banderwocky, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3yes....stairs....the hidden danger in every home...

- onlyclave, on 02/21/2008, -10/+9Does that staircase make the food any better in London?
If not, then it doesn't make me want to move there.- MacParrot, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1Aberdean Steak House FTW! Well, no not really
- plingboot, on 02/21/2008, -2/+11Are you insane? London has some of the best restaurants in the world.
- hiPpymIck, on 02/21/2008, -2/+1i hear its radically improved in the last 10 years
used to be expensive and bad ..now its meant to be cheap and good
..any experts..?- yoyoz, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1yep Mcdonalds is everywhere
- pittpat, on 02/21/2008, -7/+2I need that for CD's and DVD's..not books!
- markp93, on 02/21/2008, -2/+14it needs a cat, all curled up and cozy there
- lfroker, on 02/21/2008, -15/+4??? Why is this on the first page? Who gives a *****? Its a bookcase. There's nothing better on the internet?
- flarn2006, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4I clicked on it just to see if he wanted to move to London to see it, or to get away from it!
- zippy757, on 02/21/2008, -11/+21 - Would not pass building code in most of US
2 - It's neat, until you try to get a stretcher up, or a fireman tries to put your fire caused by bong falling over
3 - I guess that's why there are so many broken ankles in London.... - JohnSteel, on 02/21/2008, -6/+1Looks like a good way to end up with a lot of ruined books.
http://smalltown.myminicity.com/ - jfsimard79, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Meh, I just read my books off of Project Gutenberg.
Takes up a whole lot of less space.
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page - jajive, on 02/21/2008, -7/+2london sucks . rains all the time . tiny winy everything AND they have those crappy bookcase stair thingys that hard hard to go up when you are plastered
- chrisaug18, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Thats a cool use of space...although I can't say I would use it for books.
- light50, on 02/21/2008, -2/+19Dugg for not using the title - BEST. BOOKCASE. EVER.
- mst3kcrow, on 02/21/2008, -2/+5As nice as London can be, their taxes are way too high.
- jserio, on 02/21/2008, -2/+2You don't want to be browsing the books when an earthquake hits!
- stx666, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Not really the done thing in London. The neighbours would talk.
- MattInChicago, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4There is a used book store in Naperville, IL called BookZeller that has stairs similar to this with a book shelf set up much like this and has for 25 years. No need to move to London.
- meyert11, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3bookmarked for future house
- snikerdoodle, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2i want oneeee. that is a great idea.
- stilesja, on 02/21/2008, -2/+1Books looked to be organized by color? WTF?
- noseeme, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3Yeah, book organization by content and/or author FTW!
- Darrelc, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1I order my CD's by colour. Looks nicer :)
- troycott, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1that house would a be bitch on moving day.
- LeRenard, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2If that's the only reason you can come up with, you obviously haven't been there...
- noseeme, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1That's so awesome, great use of space. I wish I had that many books! (I only have like 2/3 that amount...)
- Spoomeister, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8Works if you have no pets, no kids, and always take your shoes off before entering the house.
Otherwise, this could easily be titled "how to wreck a perfectly good book collection".- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought about that.
- topbob, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1I was expecting there to be an elevator that took me to the top of a tower where I could see the view of the pretty island I've been stuck on for like 20 hours now.
- moletimer, on 02/21/2008, -2/+1There is no way the person who lives there has read all those books :P
- XIStEw13IX, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1awesome idea for anyone who wants to build there own house someday
- Casserole, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7London is a pretty horrible place to live unless you're rich and can afford the best of the best. Holidays, events, fine. Long term stay, raising up a family? Welcome to hell.
- NSResponder, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Sounds about like New York. There's a very strong correlation between how much money you have and how much fun it is to be there.
-jcr - hiPpymIck, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1raising a family .. its not my situation.. but i think id forget London and move to the country
..quit the ratrace and watch the kids grow up properly - jacobj, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1I lived in London for 4 years and loved it. But your points about money and family are completely valid. Fortunately having a family ruins the money situation, but it isn't such a problem because you don't want to live there with a family anywayl
- NSResponder, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Sounds about like New York. There's a very strong correlation between how much money you have and how much fun it is to be there.
- jisc123, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2I've visited London 5 times. I have to say its a lovely city and would gladly live there over NYC if it weren't for the distance from home and cost of living. But who knows, perhaps one day I'll be there driving around in my Bentley, able to afford the $6+/gallon gas enjoying the good life!
- stx666, on 02/21/2008, -0/+0and the daily $50 congestion charge for inner london for the Bentley. travelling at max 10 mph.
- octophobic, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7Books organized by color reminds me of the show Black Books:
Customer: "Excuse me, those books, leather bound ones... "
Bernard: "Yes, Dickens. The Collected Works of Charles Dickens."
Customer: "Are they real leather?"
Bernard: "They're real Dickens."
Customer: "I have to know if they're real leather, because they have to go with a sofa. Everything else in my house is real. I'll give you 200 for them."
Bernard: "200 What?"
Customer: "200 Pounds."
Bernard: "Are they leather-bound pounds?
Customer: "No"
Bernard: "Sorry, I need leather-bound pounds to go with my wallet. Next!" -
