Depth of field induced blur (what photographers often refer to as 'bokeh') in macro photos is (usually) visible both in the foreground and background, while bokeh in portraits/landscapes usually only shows in the background. Most people find that tilt-shift photos make the content appear miniaturized as it often places bokeh in both the foreground and background like a macro photo.
