It's an issue for similar reasons to why the Mac OS is good: Usability. Something as small as the typeface used can make small frustrations go away. Maybe a less clear font will make you take just that bit longer to read a word, or it'll have the odd pixel astray here at there - personally the broken 3D "S" in the title sequence of "Lost" drives me NUTS. Although you may never consciously notice the improvement caused by the font change, it will still remove a few minor niggles. Such niggles, so minor as to be unnoticeable to the conscious mind most of the time, are a substantial portion of what makes up the overall "feeling" of an application or device. It's not entirely logical, you just tend to like it more.
It might not seem like much, and perhaps it isn't. But it is worth the tiny amount of additional time taken to select the right font, and to learn *why* it's better.
