RSS Feed Icons - Help establish the new standard
feedicons.com — Matt Brett started a site to promote the use of a standard feed icon for RSS feeds.

- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This seems kind of arbitrary.
Oh no it's not, you can change colours ::roll:: - blowdart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ironic that it has a mailing list for updates, not an RSS feed.
Or maybe I couldn't see the link icon :) - l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also related to this story: http://digg.com/apple/RSS_icon_replacement_pack_for_Safari,_uses_new_standard_feed_icon
- brianmuse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1who keeps rating down my comments...this story has been reported several time. this comment is not spam, flame, or off topic
- error401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy's graphic design is really nice. If I had some money, I'd hire him.
And his icons are slightly different than the Firefox one. The curvy waves don't end as abruptly in the FF version I have. His are pretty faithful to MS's though.
Nice to see someone jump on this and do the pretty marketting and vector graphics for the rest of us. Be nice to see an SVG version as well (Inkscape can't open any of the vector representations). - MeatFarley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, 5 fruity flavors, including "Whatever Watermelon" and "Meh Mango".
- KicktheDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it... His tag line is: "Help establish the new standard", then he goes on to say: "Download the package and customize the icon to your liking."
Either its a standard, or not. - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a nice set of Icons.
- waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still prefer a button with "feed" on it, or at least "rss" or "atom". Those are all things you can do web searches on. How do you do a web search on an icon if you don't know what it is? It's less usable, not more.
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Well at least he's try, all you whiners sure aren't.
- jonathanex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0waiwai - I'd agree they should also say RSS/Atom when linking to feeds on sites and not just the icon, but one standard could help identify them as well though.
- darkseed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0waiwai: erm a websearch can only read text not images, so u could place an alt tag with de description of what type of feed it is 'atom' 'rss' etc...
Users don't care what type of feed it is, they just click. - FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Coming in January '06 - upload your customized icons and share with others!"
Wait...a 'standardized' icon... then promoting coming up with your own version... *scratching head* - JoshA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was just thinking that some one should do this. Great idea. But the upload your custom icons in Jan 06 doesn't make sense if it's supposed to be standard.
- error401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0waiwai, that raises some major i18n issues. You expect translations for every language on every website that uses your proposed icon? How usable is it when there isn't a translation provided for the user's language?
The icon itself may not be great (I don't like it personally, RSS has nothing to do with 'broadcasting' and this icon looks like something to do with wireless to me), but it definitely needs to be graphical not text-based. I don't have any better suggestions, and Mozilla and Microsoft have agreed on this, so it is destined to become a standard. The fact that it will be standardized is a major step forward in usability.
I'm not sure how I feel about the multiple colours. He's right saying that the graphic is recognizable enough, but the orange colour will be more noticable at a glance. I think sticking to orange is a better idea. - JoshA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm user smart web designers will include this and an icon that says xml or rss, at least until it is mainstream.
- vexite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it... His tag line is: "Help establish the new standard", then he goes on to say: "Download the package and customize the icon to your liking."
--- from the site: "the feed icon is recognizable enough that it doesn't need to be restricted to one colour."
I think he meant that you can change the color depending on your own liking while preserving the design of the rss icon (the waves). I think that is his point; however, I'm alreadycontented with the orange color. - ndansmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This news is too late.
Microsoft and Safari have agreed to use the RSS icon adopted by Firefox as a standard. So what does that leave? Opera? I am not sure which icon (if any) they use, but this seems like a forgone conclusion. When 99% of the browser market already uses the same icon, that is as standard as you can get. I appreciate this guy's site, however. If it is older than IE adopting the standard icon, he may have contributed to a real change. If the site is brand-new then he is just a johnny-come-lately bandwagoneer. - Kiltak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice..
- Note361, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I dont like it because MS likes it. I beleive that conformity of this is going no place good
- anthony522, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Web design kicks ass?!?!?! Wow he stole his entire design from Apple. Sooo impressive. Please.
- Valiss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Who is Matt Brett?
- eschatonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The orange color is part of the standardization. I'm not sure why a whole site is necessary to "upload your customized icons and share with others" when it's as cut-and-dried as the agreed upon, standardized icon
Also, Matt has great design chops, but this whole "web 2.0/big ass neon headers/fat glossy graphics" look is starting to remind me of the "k10k/6 point text/isometric block graphics" look of 2001. Not that it dosen't look good, it's just getting tired.
That is not meant as a dig at Matt, but rather an observation regarding the trendy nature of the design universe in general. - Jathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.mattbrett.com/
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not bad, but nothing special....we'll see if it becomes "the global standard".....
- ramadan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does anybody open a website these days without sticking a "PayPal Donate" icon?
- danielctull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He says he wants to "Break down the international barriers." Then uses "Harmonize", "Customize" and "Popularize" as headers. Over in the UK that's very annoying and off putting. Too many zeds for us. But you know, internationalization can be good. :/
Agree with the color changing ≠ standard comments also. - tdempsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with eschatonik - "The orange color is part of the standardization."
- Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RSS in capital letters or XML again in capital letters is fine, if it's in a nice logo than I can dig it, I have no preference.. Apple's scheme works nice in Safari RSS, sites with RSS comes up in blue in the browser bar, click it the feed fades in and the colours become inverted, blue text RSS on a white background.
I like the orange as well, but really.. do we care? It's not going to be mass confusion, and seeing as it's an open standard nobody minds.
It's like the vegetarian symbols on food, some shops have a big V for vegetarian, some have like a wheat lead with suitable for vegetarians.. who cares? I don't.. I genuinely am not bothered if I have to spend 1 second scanning the ingredients or the back of a package. - eschatonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I like the orange as well, but really.. do we care?"
We ("We" being DIGG users) might not, but grandma/grandpa/mom/dad/joe sixpack might. When possible, it's better to keep things simple and clear for all end users, no matter what their experience level. All the elements of the agreed upon icon -- including the color -- are there to make the presence of feeds as clear as possible. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the feed icon is recognizable enough that it doesn't need to be restricted to one colour."
Color is a big part of recognizing an icon.
Also, using the standard system audio icon to represent RSS is simply dumb.
"Microsoft and Safari have agreed to use the RSS icon adopted by Firefox as a standard. So what does that leave? Opera? I am not sure which icon (if any) they use"
It's the same icon. So, at least it's 'standard' in that respect. - arion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny, I just finished drafting up a new icon for my site when I saw this pop up in the Digg RSS. Mine will be based on this de facto standard, even if I don’t care for the waves --it will also be orange. =p
- JayByrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's the nice thing about a standard, anybody can create one.
That being said, I like what Matt did and will be using these icons on my intranet blog. (Until such time that something else is adopted) - sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Opera? I am not sure which icon (if any) they use"
It's a blue rectangle with "RSS" in white located in the address bar, so you see favicon + URL + RSS. - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0retarted. Digg because I'm a design fanboy.
- mcpaige, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow he stole his entire design from Apple. Sooo impressive. anthony522
you talking about this icon?
http://sixpop.com/images/images/8285322.jpg - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I dont like it because MS likes it. I beleive that conformity of this is going no place good"
in that case you might as well not use firefox cause microsoft likes firefox.....plain idiotic thinking - kplex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hmm, microsoft decide to use the firefox RSS icon, covering the vast majority of websites so this guy tries to jump on the bandwagon by muddying the clearing waters.. use the firefox/IE icon, ignore this money grabbing sh**e
- ephekt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0More Web 2.0 stupidity.
- JoshA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you who still want the logo to say XML I created this logo:
http://lopico.blogspot.com/2005/12/new-rss-xml-logo.html - UpBeetRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're arguing against this, you must be nit picking, this is a great idea and I hope more and more people pick up this icon to represent their feeds.
- vagrantradio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. you make vectors of existing icons and call it "the new standard."
Try again. - sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just checked and Safari does the same as Opera: favicon (if available) + URL + RSS (blue rectangle with white letters, if there's an RSS feed).
I think I'd prefer a combination of both approaches. Keep the rectangle with "RSS", but make it orange instead of blue. While it may look spiffy, the Firefox icon doesn't make sense for anything but a podcast's RSS feed. That's just one opinion. - surrelmar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firefox uses these for a while now...
This is what we need. People that want uniformity on the web. Somitimes it's so hard to see what the best choice is according to web stuff.... We need more people that want one standard for everything! - ve3ofa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here we have a site that is about RSS logo's and it uses the old 'subscribe via email' vice using RSS.. say What!!!???
- Briconcella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neat little tool: I want my icone to be pink. Can do with this tool
- jesus2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera uses this icon too now.
