- ddizzle, on 06/23/2008, -4/+312looks decent, but there was something about the yellow color on cnet that seems inseparable.
- AlexWiggy, on 06/23/2008, -4/+226Looks like most of those generic domain/hosting websites :/.
- LaLaFuFu, on 06/23/2008, -7/+151Looks like a premium blog theme. I don't care for it. The days of the old yellow wagon are gone. RIP yellow wagon. :(
- kamel, on 06/24/2008, -1/+124The new layout is cleaner, but it needs yellow and it's c|net, not cnet.
- bawpcwpn, on 06/24/2008, -19/+122You can't polish a turd.
- praisethelard, on 06/24/2008, -0/+68Agreed. While the layout is cleaner, I think it looks a lot more bland now.
- Dustin00, on 06/24/2008, -4/+67Now with 200% more product manufacturer bought reviews!
- leonidas333, on 06/24/2008, -10/+42I still boycott CNET after the Kane and Lynch debacle
- IHaveIssues, on 06/24/2008, -1/+32Looks like PCWorld.
- DjArcadian, on 06/24/2008, -1/+31They shouldn't drop their color scheme. The yellow was an indelible part of their brand image. I'm not a fan of their new logo either. Looks very amateurish.
- dafragsta, on 06/24/2008, -2/+30As inseparable as the reviews from the sponsors.
- PhogHawk, on 06/24/2008, -0/+27NEEDS YELLOW!!!
- disparue, on 06/24/2008, -0/+23The yellow colour gave the layout warmth.
- bman85, on 06/24/2008, -0/+23Eh, i think the yellow and green was iconic, I always knew i was at Cnet when i was bitch slapped by the harsh colors.
- limezor2, on 06/24/2008, -0/+22I used to get everything there, but now the reviews are too short, there are too many *****-ware programs and now the design is getting worse.
Oh well. - beesaretasty, on 06/24/2008, -1/+23No character.
- peestandingup, on 06/24/2008, -3/+22Cnet: Regurgitating stories over & over since 1993 ©
- Stwo, on 06/24/2008, -0/+18@ ddizzle I was just thinking that, was about to write it, and you already said it.
The yellow was uniquely CNET, now it will just look like every other site out there. - HardChargerxxx, on 06/24/2008, -1/+19Dropping the yellow scheme is a HUGE mistake.
- IphtashuFitz, on 06/24/2008, -0/+17Over the past couple years I've given up on visiting a few news sites that I used to read on pretty much a daily basis. The reason? Their "new and improved" site designs I found to be extremely annoying. I don't want flashy, glitzy, animated websites. I don't want slide shows on the front page. All that animation and extra graphics is just downright distracting. I'm used to reading articles in newspapers and magazines where there aren't audio/video enabled ads, pop-ups every time you accidentally move your mouse over something, etc. Give me good old neutral static content and I'm happy. Give me a site that's overloaded with graphics, animations, etc. and makes it difficult to figure out where one article ends and the next starts, or even where the darned headlines are, and you've lost yourself a reader.
I much prefer the older news.com site where you have summaries of each article, not this new site where it looks like they're relying on animation and just article headlines... - sluggoo, on 06/24/2008, -0/+17I've seen this happen a million times. Management thinks, "Hey, let's change things around. Let's do something bold." Of course, they have no ideas about what that would involve, no creativity, etc. Endless tweaking later, a new, thoroughly bland design emerges. The whole adventure allows the higher-ups to believe that they're doing something, that they're actively working toward improving their product or company. But it's usually just a lot of spinning wheels, and at the end of the day, what gets pooped out is often worse than what existed previously.
Sorry, bitter today. - executorzz, on 06/24/2008, -0/+17All the red makes me feel like i'm at cvs or cnn sites.
- pudds, on 06/24/2008, -0/+16Its cleaner, but not very distinct.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+14CNET needed an update but I don't know about the colors
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+13I completely agree. CNET is one of the big dogs that has been around forever. The yellow was their brand. The new look is Web 2.0 blah. Boring.
- estvir, on 06/24/2008, -6/+18Wow, you'd think with all their money they'd be able to hire someone decent.. that's if they even hired someone, they probably bought it from a template site.
- pigsbladder, on 06/24/2008, -1/+13sure are a lot of ads... well, adblock will soon take care of that
- thetacticus, on 06/24/2008, -2/+14I would prefer it to stay the same. Might get some getting used to...no more yellow. Links are more of a pain to read.
Reminds me of when MSNBC changed their layout...it caused me to stop going to that site as often...too hard to find what your used to viewing. - dtd00d, on 06/24/2008, -3/+12Honestly if it weren't for the ads it would have no color at all.
This is terrible for Firefox. - freshyill, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9I'm not a fan. It looks incredibly generic, like one of those templates you can buy online for $50.
- darkray77, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9Ok, does anybody else think ... "This is CNN"? ... or just me?
- opmike, on 06/24/2008, -0/+8I don't want to sound like an echo here, but they really should have kept the yellow theme. Regardless of one's opinion of their content, it was a "refreshing" look I guess, more lively.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+8Lipstick meet Pig ...Pig meet Lipstick
- Sil369, on 06/24/2008, -1/+9It was huggable too.
- iericg, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7While going to design skill we learned a lot about the importance of branding. McDonald's has the golden arch's, Nike has the swoosh, and Coco Cola has the red classic look...ect.. ect... I wonder if the same principles of marketing in the physical world apply to the internet. If so is cnet making a mistake by changing it's iconic color?
Although I will admit the new design is a bit easier on my eyes. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+8You can polish a Polish turd.
- MalDON, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7One word: Meh.
It's not bad, and it's not particularly amazing...
How about improving site usability rather than pushing ads? - dmyers5, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7Eh... the color scheme of the old CNET had a good deal to do with their corporate identity, and a revamp didn't need to mean the loss of it. The new site is clean, but generic.
- Vegabondsx, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6It looks nice, but very generic.
- kevine, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6I feel like the last little bit of me is finally being deleted from CNET. I was there in the beginning. When the site was getting ready to launch, Halsey Minor (then founder/CEO) had gotten really sick, and his skin was yellow. FredS made the whole site yellow, and joked that it was an inspiration from Halsey's illness. Halsey was really pissed about it, but too much work had been done to change it before launch.
Unfortunately, the yellow Fred picked wasn't web-safe, and caused pretty significant dithering. I was new to Web development, and spent the good chunk of a weekend determining what was causing the dithering, and what hex values we could use for our color palette.
Good times. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -4/+10Oh wow, a boycott of a website. Let me know how that turns out for you...
- Geek180, on 06/24/2008, -2/+8No. NO. NO!!!!
- Falstaph, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Boring
- petecampbell, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6I dislike the idea of non-capitalizing headlines
- heavyal, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Wow, I was never employed by cnet but I totally remember the pages from way back. There was a time when the blending was really off, especially in the title bars. I had no idea as to why though. Great story, dugg.
- scanman20, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6Needs more cowbell.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Oh yeah man it loads the color version for IE.
- futureb, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5you know what i do when i feel assaulted by text? i read it.
but seriously, does web design have to devolve into neanderthal-cave-painting-communication just for aesthetic reasons? why can't a content provider provide some content on their front page? - redwallhp, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4You bet traditional branding rules apply to the web. They totally do. This redesign is a big mistake.
