Photoshop Tutorial: How To Create Your Emblem
tutorials20.com — Many gamers may find this useful. This tutorial will teach you how to design your own emblem for your website or guild using Adobe Photoshop in very simple steps.
- 1514 diggs
- digg it
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52Finally I can display my clan slogan. "Im in ur base, makin puppetz from ur socks!"
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2I'm partial to "I'm in ur gamez, fraggin' ur dudez!"
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18I kind of like "Those stupid slogans were annoying from day one".
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's not catchy enough.
- GamingNews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nice one. I'm ok at editing existing graphics, but going from scratch can be rough. This is a nice helper. thanks
- vramdal, on 10/12/2007, -28/+5Good tutorial, except you need a Photoshop license ... how many gamers can afford that?
- RationalAntaxia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58everyone, if you're a pirate..... arrrrrrrrrrrrgh
- ReVRiN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21You'd be surprised. Remember the average 'Gamer' age is 34 and a lot of people use Photoshop professionally.
- max1574, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1@vramdal
I'm sure gamers can afford to 'buy' photoshop - srok, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Don't forget about http://www.fauxto.com/ almost all of the essentials of photoshop... none of the cost (except load time)
- PJBonoVox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@Srok - That thing has about 1% of the features of Photoshop, and it's *****.
- Jordan559, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@RationalAntaxia
ARRRRRRRRRGH!!! - ShadownessGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's not forget that Photoshop comes with a 30-days trial.
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3GIMP is pretty ok too.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Incredibly lame. The tutorial is all in a 588kb jpg. And of course, it makes it to the homepage with 34 diggs and it was already dead at 8:00 this morning (EST).
- tomvendetta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Here's the duggmirror bookmarklet I wrote, add to your bookmarks and click when you are at the comments page of a dead story.
javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href.replace('digg', 'duggmirror');
(even works if you have referrers disabled, or after you have made a comment) - srok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@rompom7
nice! can I change the window location to open in a new tab instead of the same one? - Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@rompom7
That won't work if the title of the article has "digg" in it. - Prophet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Rayor
Easy fix. just replace digg and duggmirror with digg.com and duggmirror.com. - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ahh good call Rayor & Prophet. I forgot the javascript replace method replaces every instance of the substring.
javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href.replace('digg.com', 'duggmirror.com'); - pirana0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just an example: http://digg.com/tech_news/Go_on_give_a_fellow_digger_a_chance
Then click the Javascript shortcut for DuggMirror. It doesn't replace all instances unless it was: replace(/digg/g,"duggmirror")

- twooranges, on 10/12/2007, -18/+10try the gimp. it's a good freeware alternative to photoshop.
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/- MrSarcasm, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Umm... not really, unless all you do is resize/make minor adjustments.
I mean sure, I did use GIMP myself, but after I got photoshop, I don't want to see GIMP again. - Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The GIMP is a great program in and of itself. But as an alternative for Photoshop, it's kinda crappy. Unless you're used to using it, like me.
- Whomever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gimp is a great editor for those of us who can't get Photoshop. However, it lacks the 16-bit per channel precision of photoshop and adjustment layers. I would recommend trying lightzone (free on linux) for color and exposure adjustments prior to editing in gimp to avoid the posterization that can come from doing this in gimp.
- jono1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Gimp is great if you're experienced with it. But for anyone new to graphics editing, or worse, to anyone who's used to the professional software (that is, used to the keyboard shortcuts they all use such as ctrl +/- for zoom in/out), the Gimp is about as user-friendly as a charging rhino.
- ShadownessGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GIMP is a good software. Many artists use it. It wouldn't be so hard to adapt this tutorial for GIMP...
- MrSarcasm, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Umm... not really, unless all you do is resize/make minor adjustments.
- MrSarcasm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2The server at tutorials20.com is taking too long to respond.
ha-ha.

Use Illustrator. - polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I know this isn't the right topic, but does anyone know of any tutorials (maybe with examples) of all the Modifiers for 3DS Max?
In my school book it pretty much says to 'play with them'..... :(
I think it wouldn strengthen my modeling to not have to guess my way through modelling an object.- muffinmanpoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2You're right. It isn't the right topic. Thumbs down for you.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hey when you wake up tomorrow, try not putting on your ***** suit.

- RadicalEdward, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1So one thing i've noticed about all these pre-macworld rumurs is that most of them don't say anything about a new iPod beyond the iPod -phone
if so: APPLE!!! U r tEh Sux0rs!!!!- RadicalEdward, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2sorry, i posted on the wrong tab!!!!
- kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1My question is just how on earth this got to the front page of digg in the first place. The end result is utterly abysmal Photoshop effect masturbation. Whacking 12 different layer effects onto a pentagon with a single character does not make a logo. If you really want your logo for your guild or clan to work you have to take your audience and theme of the games you play into account. If it's a WoW clan, you shouldn't be using modern sans serif typefaces, although if it's Counter-Strike then that is far more likely the case. Here are a couple I've made (try and guess the games they were for):
http://vaevictis.clandesk.com/images/logo.png
http://www.helljumpers.net/images/masthead.jpg- bewl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To be quite honest with you, those logos aren't that good at all. They scream photoshop, and are honestly too simplistic to be anything eye catching. Although your comment about keeping the game's theme is very correct.
- kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whether they're good or not is pretty subjective and personal as well as irrelevent; the important point is that they're sympathetic to the subject (a World of Warcraft guild and a Day of Defeat clan).
I think the comment about them being simplistic is a can of worms though; the best corporate branding/logos in the world (those that have remained almost unaltered since their inception) are also the most simple. Think of the likes of Apple, Sony, Nike, Coca-Cola - their logos are simple and clear. Simple is hardly a negative attribute as far as logo design is concerned.
- riverside71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i see imageshack and I close the browser.. it's now a reflex action
- ShadownessGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haha they're quick to block hosted images... I put it back to my own server
- tralalaa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Actually, he showed us how to create *his* emblem, not *mine*.
No digg.- ShadownessGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tutorials show first how to do something precise, then by learning the techniques, you create your own.
- ShadownessGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Server has been optimized and decently fast again.
- joevill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very nice!
- JesseJericho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3david76 and Nandes are right on... whats with the massive jpeg? Also, making any logo or symbol purely in PS is pretty much the first noob mistake of a new user.
This is what you get when 14 year olds learn how to use BitTorrent to download thousand dollar programs. Good try kid, but should this have made it to the front page, with nearly 1000 Diggs? Come on people... - IMKreativiTea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Quite nice!
- Aviance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For a few month i am looking idea for my http://www.flying-people.com blog logo ore emblem... Now i will try this tutorial, hope it helps, because i'm out of ideas now.
