Can it possibly be because the photos were shot when they were not crowded? - Zamu3L, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33i want a massive secret underground lair now

Don't smoke pot and post on the internet - randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I'm fuzzy on the whole comment abuse thing. Why is it abusive to post working mirrors when the site goes down? I mean, I usually come to digg to read articles. If they're down then my purpose for being here goes away.
- dojonz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Sorry for comment abuse. Working mirror: http://archibase.net.nyud.net:8080/archinews/14172.html
- nizam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21i wish we had something like this in chicago. not only does the service suck, buts the 'L" stations are disgusting.

No, there was nothing going over his head. That was just a stupid comment. - drakia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16It's comment abuse essentially because it doesn't have anything to do with the comment it is replying to, even if it is a useful comment.
- kapi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Looks like the batcave.. At least the first couple of pics.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Cool, one of those is my local station...

No-one lives in the Tube stations for many reasons, not least that after a while everything would get covered in thick black brake dust from the trains (the 500,000 estimated mice on the Underground are black rather than brown as their fur is coated in it!). However, there are a lot of rooms such as control desks, engineer offices etc in Underground stations - this is because all tube maintenance has to be done in the 4 hour 1am - 5am window when no trains are running which means crews need to get on the lines as quickly as possible. - chkmate21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think the idea of creating stations with the bedrock exposed, crude and unfinished is awesome! It shows the artistic leanings of the people of the country. After looking at this I would really wanna visit Sweden!
- omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've never been to Stockholm, but I didn't mind the London Underground... The whole system seemed easy enough for me to understand, and I was only there for a couple days.
Speaking of the London Underground, there's a question that I've had about it since I was there and never got an answer. In some of the tubes, I saw what appeared to be houses and other underground buildings that seemed to have people living in them. Is that the poverty-stricken section of the London populace, or is that some sort of art thing that's meant to look like a secret underground city? I honestly don't know (I was only there for 2 days), but I expect to be buried for my ignorance on the customs and lifestyles of foreign cities. - devilspy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Russian metro used to be a lot more lavish, with crystal chandeliers and fine marble. Unfortunately during harsh times, people robbed it of its grandeur to survive, selling off the crystal and marble. I'm not sure how much of it has been restored today.
here is an excerpt "Moscow's metro stations have long been dubbed "the people's palaces", for their elegant designs and lavish and profuse use of marble, mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers. Built during Stalin's rule, the metro system was supposed to display the best of Soviet architecture and design and show how privileged the lifestyle of the Russian people was. The first line, tunneled and built mainly by forced laborers, was the product of Stalin's first Fiver-Year Plan and its 13 stations were ceremoniously inaugurated in May 1935."

- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I guess people make these grandiose headlines to help their posts get dugg up, or maybe they actually believe that crap. I have some photos of the Stockholm subways, they're pretty cool, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "most artistic in the world" or "tremendous". If I had posted my photos I probably would have said "Cool Stockholm Subway Art" and it would have gotten 4 diggs and been forgotten. But really, it's just an interesting solution to a typical urban problem, and it's nice but it isn't superlative.
- kitwaites, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The new Jubilee line stations are a lot more modern and architecturally amazing
http://www.trainweb.org/tubeprune/Jubilee.htm
Though admittedly some parts of the Tube (District and Circle, Met) are crap. - honkaform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Where'd his other leg go?
- Raingwc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They may look beautiful and all, but hey, when you're in zombie mode on your way to work at 7am each morning, somehow the artistic touch just matter :P
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -4/+8Pot doesn't make you an idiot. You make you an idiot.
- avasol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow! So many comments and not one based on the Swedish Chef, IKEA or our beautiful women!
C'mon! Where's your sense of ridicule? - MysticSavage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think Moscow's subway is on par with this one.

edit: martynda beat me to it. - unruled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wow... I half-expected to see some lame pics.. but this is pretty f***** sweet!

I love how rotterdam is up in there... because it is pretty sweet :) represent! - Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, as a Swedish citizen I can say that it's not really that fantastic as it might look on those photos. And, it's usually a lot more crowded, so you can't just go around admiring the walls as it might seem in the photos. But sure, I have never been in a subway station in any other country so I don't really know :)
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4But for posting mirrors, comment abuse is fine. I want the mirrors to be as close to the top as possible to have an easy way to of finding them.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@strand,
Not cool to make such comments when you've obviously never been there. The Stockholm subway is just as nice as it looks in the photos, and most of those are not weird angles either. It's just a nice subway.
It's much too warm though. I took off my jacket because I was sweating, it was so hot. And then of course I forgot it, left it on the seat. My jacket was mailed to me two weeks later complete with wallet plus cash and cards, nothing was stolen. Try doing that on any other subway in the world! - AnotherGopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Note almost none of the bedrock is actually exposed - instead its covered "thinly" with spray on concrete.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Those walls are awesome. I'd love to try climbing some of them... looks like a great place for some bouldering.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool. Seen a couple of those irl, Washington's new grid was quite futuristic. Berlin is very nice but mostly for that old European bahnhof look, not much art or design there.
- whitewood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those who are into art: thecoolhunter has a collection of designer subway stations (including Stockholm and London):
http://www.thecoolhunter.net/travel/DESIGNER-SUBWAY-STATIONS/ - h3ndrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of that elevator in Half-Life *shudder*
- jooaakim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kungsan, or kungsträdgården is one of the most museum-like stations, quite nice.
Zinken is probably the worst near the city center. Not so much art at the suburban stations like Norsborg and Kista either.
That first picture us from Mordor though, solna. Bleh. - Brog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those are some of the finest stations 85% of your earnings can buy.
- Timmmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, you can only do it when you are tunnelling through solid rock though. Most of the time you are going through clay or something that needs to be supported.
- itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ah yeh, I've been through underground malls in Tokyo, would be hell to build in Chicago, but man could they learn some things. I love the bedrock here though.
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Abbesses metro stop in Paris has two impressive murals on its spiral staircases. Ken Turkowski produced QuickTime VR movies of them here: http://www.worldserver.com/turk/quicktimevr/AbessesAscend.html which probably hold some kind of record for width - each represents a 2500° rotation!
- ckfried, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some more pics of the subways here, from my trip last September: http://public.fotki.com/chkfried/work/06q3_stockholm_sweden/
- Lasereth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, that's amazing. I'd like to visit that someday.
- affinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These photo sites keep going down.. damn it
- Gojulas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's amazing to see a metro/subway station where every surface isn't covered in advertising!
- Erkan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Stockholm city, about 2-3 stations from the main central so I ride the Subway a lot here but rarely take notice of the art. And I usually never see anyone else admiring it either. But you should visit the station "Universitetet" that's nice.
- Dracomantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats DAM impressive... a good idea
- strand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhm... I live in stockholm and use the subway every day to get to and from work. So I think I have a pretty good idea of how it looks.
- stevenvh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Seems real" and then "something like a SciFi film."
LMAO - rauz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+185%? Where'd you get those numbers, Fox News?
- philipv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3http://www.duggmirror.com
- Ryuukuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just saw this on the Travel Channel this morning! But it was one of those shows hosted by that obnoxious blonde lady who looks like a watered-down Ellen DeGeneres. I hate her...the Travel Channel lady, I mean. Ellen's okay.
- Smuikas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If the trains don't run from 1am to 5am, how do you get home from the pub across town that your buds invited you to?
- grandwazzoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah, been there myself. Compare those to the grey Subway-stations in Helsinki, that look like soviet suburbs. Swedes know how to do certain things right!
