- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60RTFA - it's an optical illusion, so it's still impossible
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -24/+65Will it blend? That is the question.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35You ain't got no alibi!
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Can you blend something that doesn't really exist?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yet worth your reply?
- puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yay, my home town is on the front page of Digg again :D
(Last time was for the 'flying car' on Google Earth)
The impossible triangle has been there for years! I don't understand how this is news. - firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26But can it be seen from space?
- puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The point is that it's only visable if you look from a certain angle. You can't make it work from all angles, which is why it is imposible.
I used to go to Tafe around there, in East Perth. - robvstheworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13When will it guest star on "Neighbours"?
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Design?
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Anybody else getting sick of the "blend" jokes?
- Propapanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This will forever change the way we kick field goals.
- djp2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It is more impressive in real life than than the photos suggest.
BTW the building with all the dishes on the roof in the first main photo is the Chinese Embassy ! - Cubedude04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow i live in perth and have never seen it
- dustko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9More like blend "jokes"..
- hokeywhiteboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I go through that roundabout at least twice per day, and never, ever, noticed that that is what it was... I just thought it was a dumb sculpture.
It is on a VERY busy road, but it does not matter which way you are going, you don't get that view of it. From the pics, it looks like they totally installed it wrong, and you can only see that effect from one of the sides! - evilzombie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7well it's not like the world pays attention to Perth, even people in Perth don't pay attention to Perth, so of course something that has been there for years is only just being discovered now :-P
and I also went to TAFE just around the corner from it and knew of it's existence before now as one of the other posters has said - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You all lose.

- kixxster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9you want ugly: http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7752/ritsculpturekb6.png
sorry the image is *****, its the webcam on campus - puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of the "arms" has a section cut out of it at the top, so it looks like the other arm fits in flush. This may explain why it looks to have been doctored.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Looks like a ***** version of http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/c/cd/The_B_of_the_Bang,_Manchester.JPG
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No way, the Experience Music Project in Seattle dwarfs all of those in terms of scale and ugliness.
http://dest.travelocity.com/website/destinations/photos/035_110.jpg
And its right by the space needle so it's not like you can hide it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its so old it has rust marks FFS
- puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It is impossible. The sculpture isn't a triangle, it's an optical illusion that makes it look like an impossible triangle.
- CasaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We have like at least 12 of these here (in the Netherlands). All located on cheese round-a-bouts at cheap industrial zones.
- bwad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Dont go out of your way, its crap even by perth's standards, and has been there for years. Sad that this is the only way dullsville can get to the front page of Digg!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Indeed, that building is ugly. But then again, it's Ghery. As hideous as most of his new work is, it isn't nearly as ugly as his older work.
Look up any of his stuff before he discovered wrapping buildings in titanium. There should be a restraining order keeping 150 yards between that man and bricks. - 1021, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7where else would you put it?
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7it's a bit ugly and only visible from one angle. there's better stuff to spend money on imo.
ugly site too. - MistressRoninS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bizstyler
It actually is more impressive in google. I can't imagine why people miss it considering it like in the center of a busy area, seems like it should be a focal point. - bizstyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oops, it's been there since 1999 and hadn't seen it either. There's a good shot of it on Google maps:
http://maps.google.com/maps?z=18&ll=-31.951621,115.876907&t=k&om=1 - robsta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I read digg every day and find it very interesting to see something thats local to me. My Dad's firm (EPRA) commissioned the sculpture, but the guy that wrote the article pointed to the wrong link on his website (http://www.epra.wa.gov.au/corporate). The link should be: http://www.claisebrookcove.com.au/Claisebrook/Visitor+Information/Public+Art.htm
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Art is dead. The death of art usually implies a dying society.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12I love art as much as the next person...But, Why is this in the Technology section of Digg?
- howard007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I live in Perth and its news to me :-) I am the next suburb over in Northbridge so I am going have to get on my bike and check it out and take a few pics. I'll see what hi-res digital photos turn out like under the right lighting.
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have one of these made out of wood at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
- twst1up, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2imagine coming up on that ***** whilst trippin......nice
- t4k3n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2take it easy... perth is dope... you just have to know how to work it..
ie.... alot of beer! - sanza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm sorry but I think it's hideous from all but the correct angle. And it's too thin to *easily* see the illusion when you ARE at the correct angle. I admit that it's visible, but it's not as striking as it would be if it were thicker. The initial drawing was slightly thicker and the illusion factor is more evident in it.
Just my 2 cents. If you think it looks great then good for you and I'm glad this made front page.
On a side note, I once saw an illusion on Mr Wizard (or something) where a rotating hollow rectangle appeared to be intersected by a pole of some sort. I believe it was based on positioning as this triangle illusion is. Does anyone know where I might find this on the web?
Lastly, this illusion always reminds me of the game 'Zombies' that I used to play on my old Atari 800. The levels were made of illusions like this one. - The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My god, that's impossible!
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha, that brings me back...I did a project way back in 8th grade about optical illusions and tried to blow some minds by taking pictures of me holding an identical (but slightly smaller) model that I put together out of three pieces of wood. It's obviously pretty easy to make, at least if it doesn't have to be 40 feet tall...
- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 never mind
- itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"excuse me i live in perth and it aint no optical ollusion
it is just bent in a certain way so that when you either on exactly on one side or the other"
Which would make it umm.. Oh.. An optical illusion? It's not on the Swan River either, it's in the middle of a roundabout next to Claisebrook Cove, which is a tributary of the Swan river. Furthermore, it was built in 1999, which is actually eight years.
To the posters wondering why it's not more popular, I'd say it's because of the most typical mistake made by public planners in Perth - they mistakenly think that if you put public art in the middle of something, somehow the space will become more frequented by the public. In this particular case, the art is in the middle of a ROUNDABOUT, so 99% of the people driving past it have no idea what it is - to them it just looks like a giant IUD in the middle of the road - and it's too dangerous to see it from the required angle while engaged in the act of driving. The only people who can appreciate it are people living in the neighbourhood who bother to climb the stairs - but few ever do because the only thing up the stairs is a road. There is a park across the road, but I think it's not used as much. I personally have a close friend who lives right near the statue, who had no idea it contained an illusion until he read this article. So by all accounts, this sculpture has failed in its intended purpose based primarily on poor location. - wush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3whine more
- cualcrees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Arrghh! my braaaiin!!
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, here in the East Village, NYC, we have a big cube...and it looks like an actual cube.
It stands on its corner, in the middle of Astor Place, which is the crossroads between the West Village and the much cooler East Village.
(But the article fails to note that it was actually taken away for a number of years, probably in the late 70's, and then brought back. Perhaps it was being cleaned.)

Know as 'The Fries' on UF's campus - from the early 90s I think.

absolutely maybe! - puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The picture on that web page (number 15 in the Public Art brochure) looks very familiar. My dad built a house near that. I remember helping him out one day, and going for a walk around. I stumbled across that area, with the spongy floor. I thought it was very cool.
