- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Digg needs to just autocache sites and only make the cached version availible if the original stops responding, that way ad revenue won't be blocked from the other site, since they can't even get a page to load for a visitor anyways!
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14digg effect.
Here's a Coral Content distribution link...
http://www.brownbatterystudios.com.nyud.net:8080/sixthings/2006/03/06/rapid-fire-1-photo-realistic/ - ammoniaslip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Plus, you're too much of a one-trick pony to adapt the conceptual steps of the effect to whatever image editing software you prefer.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow that URL is really messed up: here's an easier one: http://fletchowns.net/photo.pdf
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7jonashwing - It's not always easy to tell which are going to have capacity problems, and not digging a story just because of what server its on is the most retarded "solution" i've heard of. The bandwidth cost will be miniscule.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bezier curves are your friend. now and forevermore. play with paths in Photoshop (I don't use Fireworks) to see what I mean - non-destructive editing FTW.
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its nice to see some fireworks tutorials for a change.
- paroxsitic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Deceiving title. The effect is nice but how often would people use this?
- Drgn547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great tutorial. Instead of using the mildly confusing and sometimes hard to use bezier curves, you could use Image>Adjustments>Warp instead. Otherwise great!
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3only thing is that Digg then is paying for the bandwidth, which would be easily 2x if not 10x what it is now.
That's actually why I posted the Coral link above... (which doesn't seem to be working for me now, but hey I tried to help...)
If more people would use Coral to post their stories in the first place, it would accomplish exactly what you are talking about, and digg wouldn't have to pay for the extra bandwidth. - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's the highlight of this tutorial for me. Adding bezier points to a drop shadow to give it a realistic shadow is an excellent tip. The results reflect that.
The description is a bit misleading as you are only creating photo-real glossy paper. Excellent tutorial nonetheless. - optik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It would be a good feature of Diggs if it automatically added the nyud bit but then also had the original link clickable in the digg page (the page you are currently reading)
- cwigley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Definitely a deceiving title. But cool nonetheless.
- Yodacola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Additional PDF via YouSendIt

Optimized for web - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not really. At least for me.
Good tutorial. Straight-forward and simple. I already knew how to do a lot of those things, but one thing I did learn was how to create the illusion of having the photo "curled" or "bent" by distorting the shadow beneath it.
--You can basically do the same thing in Photoshop using the same steps. - Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amen to that! I was beginning to think I was the only person left in the world using Fireworks, rather than Photoshop.
- xiongchiamiov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, it's called Coral Cache... google.com.nyud.net:8080/ig for ex.
- xiongchiamiov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay for someone smart enough to know about Coral Cache.
- MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The thing that bugs me is the white keyline along the top of the right "photo".
Why go to all the effort of making it look real if you leave something sloppy in there?
Three words: Jar Jar Binks. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ScreenGrab!-ed image available here: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/4663/rapidfire15jt.jpg
- gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow. Awesome shadowing techniques! This is beautiful work.
- illu45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yup... Can't seem to get a Google Cache of it, either :(
- KiltedMile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Seems to be DOA....
- Goracle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sorry about the title. I just used the one that they used.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here's a PDF of it for those that can't get to it: http://fletchowns.net/Rapid%20Fire #1_ Photo-Realistic%20at%20SixThings.pdf
- xijio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1neither coral nor google cache are working for me does anyone have a copy? I could mirror it...
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1cool, but too complicated.
- joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think fletchowns is saying that Digg should Coral cache the page, not cache it itself. Obviously once the site is has suffered from the Digg effect it can no longer be cached.
Perhaps Digg could just force Coral cache to cache the site when the article hits the main page. - tellojsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats awesome guys! its things like this soo simple and yet it really makes the differance when your creating something important
- Johnbinarystar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg should id hosts that bomb out like this and post a running total so people can see which hosts to avoid. These hosts should get razzed for providing crappy bandwidth. It is just starting now, but if people don't start to complain, and ATT gets there way, the WWW will peter out due to nothing having sufficient bandwidth except the Korpses (Corporations) brand name sites.
- michaelburns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice effect and great article....
http://visionspc.blogspot.com - Yodacola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, but then the Digg servers would get hit with a higher cpu load.
- joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's a pun.
- scratchpd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you can learn how to create much better effects buy just playing around with the tool (or orthers) for an evening or two. but still.. it shows how easy and fast you can make cheap little pictures that impress digg readers. more data, everyone.
- Thezeppelin62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1thats fantastic
- MrWho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've produced a Photoshop version of the tutorial here:
http://dr-who.blogspot.com/2006/03/shopping-tardis.html - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not a photorealistic image, no digg.
- scratchpd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i like that getting laid guide on your blog man.
NOW you are going to get hits... : ) - porkmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1doesnt seem to work :-(
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Good idea.
- laserob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Agree!
- c-nug, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I can't imagine using this effect any time soon, plus the tutorial is for Fireworks and not Photoshop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1*ignore me, i posted on the wrong storry*
- KiltedMile, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Brilliant !
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1You bastards! Burying my comment!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Link doesn't work, and don't understand the title. How to make a real photo more photo-realistic? I think more appealing would suite it better, sounds good though- wish the link worked.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Cool article...not.
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3lame!
what about their bandwidth costs?
i think the REAL solution is to just-don't-digg-those-stories - paroxsitic, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3Err, Double post. The original post didn't show up for 30 seconds.
