- cfelde, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Correct..
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I'm dutch and I always smile when I see how close our languages are... We could translate it to
"Klaar voor het sluiten"... It's not something we'd say quickly in our everyday's life (rather "klaar om te stoppen"), but if I read Norwegian I can almost always guess what it means! How about you if you read Dutch (in the case you do)?- philipkaplan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Ootsä valmiina lopettaa? ;)
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not even the same language family, so that's cheating ;P

Maybe because Norwegian is just a new language developed from Danish, but still...- grr74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Scandinavian languages are closely related, and Norwegian today is influenced by Danish because the Danish crown so decreed.
Wikipedia quote:
"The last structures of the Kalmar Union remained until 1536 when the Danish Privy Council, in the aftermath of a civil war, unilaterally declared Norway to be a Danish province [5], without consulting their Norwegian colleagues. Norway kept some separate institutions and its legal system [5], but the former Norwegian possessions of Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, came directly under the Danish crown. In the 1814 treaty of Kiel, the king of Denmark-Norway was forced to cede Norway to the king of Sweden, Charles XIII. Norway, led by the vice-roy, prince Christian Frederik, objected to the terms of the treaty. A constitutional assembly declared Norwegian independence, adopted a liberal constitution, and elected Christian Frederik king. After a brief war with Sweden, however, the peace terms of the Convention of Moss recognized Norwegian independence, but forced Norway to accept a personal union with Sweden."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union
As a Norwegian, Danish and Swedish are like dialects. Concerning your comment regarding Norwegian being developed from Danish, I should point out that in Norway there are two official languages: Bokmål (Norweigan) and nynorsk (New Norwegian) where Bokmål is built on Danish and New Norwegian is the language that was left untouched by the Danish influence. (I should note that bokmål literally means "book speech" which origin is when Danish was the official written language (thus perverted Norwegian).
- grr74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Scandinavian languages are closely related, and Norwegian today is influenced by Danish because the Danish crown so decreed.
- Herostratos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Written Norwgian was developed from Danish, but it has been "Norwegified" for 200 years now...
Norwegian, the language, is most definitely not developed from Danish. - kettlechips, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6wait... Europe has different languages now?
- excused, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Norways most written language is inherited from Danish, yes, unfortunately. But the language and dialects in it self is inherited from Norse, which is quite similar to Icelandic. Both Norwegian, Swedish and Danish comes from Norse.
- philipkaplan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Ootsä valmiina lopettaa? ;)
- Herostratos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah I've always thought dutch is a funny language cuz it has so many striking similarities to Norwegian.
- henrikd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Afrikaans language spoken in South-Africa, which originates from Dutch, is also very similar to Norwegian. In my opinion even closer than Dutch. I was surprised by this when I spent some weeks in Cape Town this summer and I was able to understand most of the signs written in Afrikaans :)
It was almost like there was Norwegian signs in Africa. Funny :D
- theysayjump, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8This would put a whole new meaning on the term "pole smoking" if this was from Poland.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -2/+60May I have two Sluts please?
- Cowfrommars, on 10/10/2007, -19/+10I read that as 'Care for a slut?'
- TheLastFreeMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I read that too, 10 comments ago.
- drcreek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+139Means Ready to finish/quit. But it is funny. Slut also means "The End" in Sweden i watched Disney's Aladdin there the other week. Just as the princess and the hero are flying off into the sunset they kiss and the word "SLUT" appears on the screen.
- philipkaplan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I can't even begin to tell you the extreme giggle I had when I saw that for the first time.

- Wandel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Except slut doesn't mean cigarette.
- ExiL3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0yeah I wonder when people are actually going to read other peoples comments.
dcreek said it pretty clearly, Slutte means to end something or stop something.
- SuckMyDigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Actually I think that is counter-productive for someone who is seriously trying to stop smoking. Seeing someone smoke, or even being reminded of smoking while you're quitting makes it that much harder to stop.
- multitude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It looks like a regular company selling the gum. Do you think they really care if you quit? I'd assume it's fine with them as long as people purchase their products.
- Skitals, on 10/10/2007, -13/+6Clever ad. I think the exhaust smoke is photoshopped, though.
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12it's cold out there... Warm exhaust condenses real quick. It's real.
- thomashauk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Its not really smoke most of what you see there is steam.
Remember from school? 2C6H14 + 19O2 -> 12CO2 + 14H20- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, but combustion engines aren't 100% efficient, so if the bus is accelerating, there's likely a lot of other fumes in there.
Plus, exhaust smells bad. Water and CO2 don't smell bad, so some chemical fumes must be in there.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, but combustion engines aren't 100% efficient, so if the bus is accelerating, there's likely a lot of other fumes in there.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Great ad, but can anyone explain why nicotine replacement therapy to aid quitting smoking costs so damned much? I saw a box of gum for over 50 bucks the other day. The patches and lozenges are even worse. Are they over-regulated? Wasn't the whole point of making these things available over the counter to help people who are addicted? Don't poor people smoke more than the rich and middle classes?
Check this out...
Nicorette starter pack-100 pieces of gum- List price..
58 bucks!! "Discounted" to 49.93!
http://tinyurl.com/ysx692
Fifty bucks for gum.
Cartons of smokes are cheaper. Of course you get the cancer bonus, but what smoker doesn't know that already? Am I way off here, or does this seem counter-productive to the goal? If I were quitting smoking, I'd be discouraged by the price.- Theoxenmooving, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13That's nothing. I'm quitting now (4 days off of cigarettes, on the generic gum) and I'll be getting my prescription for Chantrix filled tommorow. I called my insurance provider to see if they would cover stop-smoking aids. They don't.
If I kept smoking, and got emphezima in the next 6 months, guess what? The insurance would have to pay THOUSANDS... TENS OF THOUSANDS in hospital bills, medicine for my emphizima, oxygen, etc.... all because they didn't want to pay for stop smoking aids. It's the single most short-sighted corporate policy I've ever seen. They could either pay out the $200 for a three-month prescription of chantrix (which has a 70% success rate) or say ***** it and pay millions for all their policy holders when they eventually get sick.- nmckinlay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6As long as you're a smoker. you pay the 'smoker' premium, which is a fair bit higher than a nonsmoker. it's priced in such a way that the burden/cost of smokers being smokers is absorbed thru higher rates, and we lose the incentive to lower the cost of treatment :
- nybble41, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Which, of course, is exactly the way it's supposed to be, since the point of insurance isn't to subsidize costs directly related to your own behavioral choices. Smokers have a higher risk of certain expensive medical conditions, so the insurance provider can either explicitly disavow coverage for those conditions or charge the smokers at least as much extra -- on average -- in their premiums.
- CharlesMay, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Then say that they pay the $200.00 for your prescription and 6 months later you begin smoking again (if you weren't one of the 30% that never stopped) and then 6 months later got emphezima. I bet you would be ***** when they stated that you weren't covered due to them paying for you to quit.
- nmckinlay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6As long as you're a smoker. you pay the 'smoker' premium, which is a fair bit higher than a nonsmoker. it's priced in such a way that the burden/cost of smokers being smokers is absorbed thru higher rates, and we lose the incentive to lower the cost of treatment :
- nmckinlay, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Let's say you smoke two packs a week. That's 2 x $10 = $20 per week on smokes. That's $20 x 4 = $80/mo on smokes. thats $80 x 12 = $960/yr in smokes. If you quit smoking and live 10 yrs, thats $9600/decade.
Think in terms of the long-run. Shell out $50 for gum now, and save $9600 over the next 10 yrs ;)- jcostom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5True, except I don't know a single smoker that only smokes 2 packs a week. It's usually more like 1 or 2 a day. And to the guy above moaning about how much the gum costs, a carton of cigarettes is over $50 here in NJ. My eyes about fell out of my head when I saw that the other day. I can't believe people are willing to pay that much to be slowly killed.
- blazes816, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not to mention my father has been quitting. He's been chewing the gum.
For the past two years. - TheInfamousOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Jesh, where do u live that smokes are 10$ a pack, 3.15 here in missouri. I smoke a pack a day, ends up being about 90$ a month. I've tried patches, gum, and chantix. None of em worked for me, so now i've set a quit date and am going to try it cold turkey. All Chantix did for me was make me sick if i didn't eat before i took it.
- philipkaplan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Actually, the added bonus of paying extra money to quit could help you associate the urge for nicotine with the negative result of spending too much money.
If you want to stop biting your fingernails, rip up a 10 dollar bill each time you catch yourself.
You'll stop pretty damn fast.
Thanks, Pavlov!- stormgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I may be wrong here, but I believe people pay for cigarettes. You know. They buy them, at stores.
- TheInfamousOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'd think that would make people associate the supplimental things with money, and make them not want to try to quit again.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2damn straight. I'd love to quit, but I can't afford the patches/gums, as crazy as that sounds. I'm just about ready to go to the docs for a prescription of drugs to stop it, which will be free.
Govt should step in here... if they're serious about countrywide smoking bans and people's health, these products should be cheaper (or at least a similar price) the the products they are replacing. - DeFex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if you use inhalers its a bit more like smoking than gum, and they are a bit cheaper over all. ind itt worked first try for me. took about 3 months. 3 years ago.
they actually worked out cheaper than the smokes, - mrgoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In the UK, because we have a free healthcare, you can get the gum free on prescription from your Doc. Ha ha.
- dertykevin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yeah but you get 100 pieces. It's supposed to be a one time payment, 100 pieces and quit.
If you really wanna quit smoking, vaporize it or vaporize weed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporizer - JackBandit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wake up guys! many of these so-called "helpful hands" who are trying to get you to quit cigarettes stem from none other than - you guessed it - the cigarette corporations themselves! they take your money when you get addicted, then take your money while getting off...its a win/win for them :- /
- Theoxenmooving, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13That's nothing. I'm quitting now (4 days off of cigarettes, on the generic gum) and I'll be getting my prescription for Chantrix filled tommorow. I called my insurance provider to see if they would cover stop-smoking aids. They don't.

- macwac, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Clever Norwegian ad. I reckon its quite effective. Diggin it =)

Maybe soon we'll see an ad to for blinders to eliminate offensive images. - plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I am sick of plagiarisms. This is again a rip-off of some other old ad (so old we often see it coming back in the "coolest ads ever!" compilations).

- philipkaplan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2At least they put the ad on the back and not on the bus windows.
I hate it when I can't look out the windows to watch the sluttes as we go by. - mrdorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1quite an old pic
- rationalhead, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3worrie about the cigs, never mind al the toxic city fumes, like eehmmm exhausts, how ironic
- DavidGX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1City fumes and the like don't excuse people blowing cancer-fumes around when they should keep that ***** in their homes.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...when they shouldn't be blowing cancer-fumes around at all.
There, fixed that for you.
- Powerlock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Strange - three of the windows seem to be, what's the correct phrase, boarded up ?
- geminister, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0I'd love it if you american morons stopped combining europe into one unit. This pic is from Denmark or Norway, and neither country is anything like France or England. Just try to compare Alaska to Chile.. Get educated already!
- CharlesMay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4well, it can be "Chilly" in Alaska. Does that count? - Sorry couldn't resist.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At least choose two locations that aren't on different continents for your example (Alaska and Chile, lest you think I'm an American moron and I'm suggesting France and England are on different continents).
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It's a pretty clever idea. As an ex-smoker, though, whenever I see anyone smoking (even that fake thing on the back of a bus) it actually makes me want one, again.. Ah well... 3 months and going strong... I highly recommend going cold turkey. Staying addicted to nicotine doesn't REALLY mean you've quit; you'll always want a fix. Just give it up, deal with the irritability and nervousness that goes with it, and eventually it will get easier. I think you'll always kinda want one, though.
- vichs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0u'll smoke again :P
- ExiL3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If people want to know exactly where it is;
It's on Karl Johans Gate in Oslo, not far from the royal palace.
-oh and to you guys who think the smoke that comes out of the bus is shopped; hot air from engine + cold air outside = white coloured smoke - vichs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0buried cuz its old!
- RabidFurby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Klar for a slutte....
Anybody? - draebor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6In Soviet Russia, slut smoke you!
- phirestyle, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Why do people even smoke?
I never understood that. And don't tell me you're addicted. I've smoked before... nothing "addicting" about it.
After you smoke your breath and fingers smell like *****. And did I mention it's bad for you?
So, why do people smoke? Any smokers here? Care enough to explain?- Typhoon2009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Having asked my dad, an ex-smoker, it comes from peer pressure + wanting to escape the bad things in life. Smoking gives you a euphoric sensation apparently, obviously not on the level of weed but it makes you forget everything for a bit. It's because the nicotine (I think) makes your brain produce more serotonin and other chemicals that make you feel relaxed and at ease. Your brain gets physically hooked to that feeling after a while.
I think pretty much all smokers know it's bad for you; it's hard to stop smoking though, and I really don't think people should go about saying "smokers are stupid" (not insinuating that you said that, but I've seen it before) until they actually learn why the person started smoking. It takes a lot more strength and willpower to stop smoking than to sip on your latte while writing your blog nobody cares about.- phirestyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thank you...
I showed your reply to my dad (ex-smoker as well) and he said you're right on the point.
- phirestyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thank you...
- alive1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You've smoked before? One or two cigarettes? Get out of here, you're so hardcore!
Seriously, though. Smoking is addictive, and it tastes great. Don't say that it doesn't taste good, as taste is a personal preference. I bet you don't like Danablu cheese either, while many people love it.- phirestyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, *****, I just wanted to know why people smoke. I was expecting an enlightening reply like Typhoon2009's, not trying to appear "hardcore" okay?
- Drain23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0You don't get addicted until it becomes a habit... dopamine feels good.
- Typhoon2009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Having asked my dad, an ex-smoker, it comes from peer pressure + wanting to escape the bad things in life.
