Except, you know, it's not a datacentre. This is a room with some computer equipment in it.
My lounge room is more of a datacentre than this place, at least my stuff is in a rack. - SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+92...And I thought cameras weren't allowed in Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger server room...
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56I didn't know that normal people's bedrooms could be considered data centers.
- Alexx3k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59yeah, because servers have a monitor each... *rolls eyes*
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45are you an idiot.
Servers dont need monitors because they are usually administered remotely or one is plugged in when they need to do stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37WIREMESS connection!
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29If anything, this is a makeshift renderfarm. Note all the machines have large heatsinks and GFX cards, along with only one HDD each.
- hanapbuhay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30...this does not deserve to be on Digg's front page.
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24not only is that messy, thats really dangerous too. should get the cleaned up asap!
- d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19http://www.timw.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/messydc-2.jpg
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17That's not a data center.
I knew of a lot of people running setups like that when doing distributed computing projects like SETI@home so they could run a ton of systems off of a RAM disk with a floppy distro of linux.
But it is messy. - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Was on that site: http://www.planetarosa.com.br/the-worst-datacenter-ever/ but I thought you guys wouldn't like the ads or the big blank space. :o
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Just needs a little cable management... a few zip ties would work wonders.
- andrewtj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'd imagine they're probably in a cluster or used for a distributed computing project of some sort. Having a monitor plugged in is hardly relevant - we've got a ratio of roughly 1:30 in machines to keyboard/video/mouse where I work. Monitors are a waste of space in a datacenter.
- bobartig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12My thoughts exactly. Doesn't 'data center' imply large amounts of storage? I.e. each mobo would have like 4 ATA controllers and 8 HDD slaved off it? I didn't really see any HDD's in the picture. World's Ugliest Beowulf cluster??
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12old....but the kangaroo is cool!
- xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10less a datacenter, more a bedroom with a bunch of crap in it.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Get the ***** out of my guest bedroom!
- OutKast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Thats not a data center, this is a data center http://www.nyi.net/d-cable.html
- travisb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This one takes the cake: http://img503.imageshack.us/my.php?image=redecrescendo0gihm5.jpg
Can you imagine trying to trace a cable in there? - bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would guess that it's a clustering project for something like folding at home.
Really cool setup though =) - betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I recognize the photos..............this is a seti or folding farm for a guy in England. 60 ish boxes I seem to recall. BUT NOT A DATA CENTER !!!!!!!!!!
- scootinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Worst part IMO is the tower of 10 or so power supplies (all connected to mobos) in one of the pictures...it would be really bad if the tower fell over (all the computer equipment would probably fall with it.)
- spartan018, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8you don't use GFX cards for that kind of rendering. they're are almost definately there to make it easy to keep track of whats going on in each comp, without the need for the overhead of any kind of cluster software running on the machine itself.
- villium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9no, wooden frames = non conductive.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ok.. you're right, the post you mentioned is better.. but let's just say you're the stupid one to mix things up.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6non conductive does not mean nonflammable.
- rmerrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@IvanB
They're called sock puppets.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockpuppet_%28Internet%29
It's considered as trolling, but some people use it as an artform.
Did you enjoy the show? - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7umm these were all wired together for number crunching, data storage, or even a home build server... and maybe it wasnt on at the time.
- PointAndClick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At least he's recycling the mobo boxes.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A data centre at the very least implies proper cooling and racks and erm, REAL SERVERS.
- hanapbuhay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...remember this, showing up on Digg a month ago? (Pixar's Render Farm)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/thetwilitekid/85940485/in/photostream/ - Moogle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh, that's just Blizzard's WoW servers.
- Sc0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol that is pretty funny.
i used to have loads of mobos around the place running, i thought i was bad.. but that is just terrible...
i wonder what he is using all those pcs for?
i cant see any hard drives as well.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 bash.org
hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is. - czeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was wondering what Comcast's data center looked like. :)
- moop2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh the irony! Here I am, at work, staying late on a Saturday night so I can re-run the cables on our rack because they were just a mess! :)
- Pekay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Works?
- pihlopase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Been on Digg before
http://digg.com/hardware/Worlds_worst_homemade_server_setup
Many of these pictures are old and the "servers" in the pictures were being used by Seti teams. I remember seeing this on the Seti website years ago. Wish I had the link
The original link for the pictures is: http://www.bulletinboardforum.com/m/homemade_web_server.php
It looks like the original photos are from 2004. - rowhard99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is this what Kevin Rose's apartment looked like when he first started Digg???
- Quake120, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's enough cabling to influence your thoughts with crosstalk when you walk by!
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thats not a datacenter. Thats not even a network closet...
- Laton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's the back story on this one?
- Quake120, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The server room where I work (a video game company) is pretty messy because none of us has time to clean it up, plus it is half server room/half storage room. We have to move tons of boxes if we want to get to our rackmount switches/routers. This one is just a tangled mess of wires.
- jstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You think you're clever saving all that money on cases? I bet you'll think you're a real genius when that catches fire and your house burns down.
- crimoid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does it blend?
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope that guy doesn't own a cat.
- krux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How exactly is this a data center? Last time I checked, they were not painted pink and had floral borders.
- Peeping_Tom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That isn't a safe setup, for a number of obvious reasons.....one being that computer components are covered in fire retardants, many of which are known carcinogens. Sweet dreams!
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So THAT is what happened to dreamhost in 2006. I was wondering...
