- trevbork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The only problem with this is what happens when my internet goes down and I need to convert days into years to determine how long it will take Comcast to fix my internet?
:0 - moocow1452, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Media Convert FTW, cause it isn't over complicated and it does it all. I use it all the time to strip DR- I mean, Why do you want to know?
As for standalone, I recommend Super.

Edit: I can't link, so just Google "Super," it's the first link on the page. - scuba7183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4just leave it on overnight
- Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can vouch for media-convert, it saved my ass with a final paper (late to class, saved it to usb, discovered i saved it as open document), I google media converter and found it and was able to convert the file in no time, I was able to print it out and get to class without being yelled at :)
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From TFA: "The tool converts HTML to PHP, Javascript or ASP"
For what possible purpose? - Anonymous3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The media-convert and zamzar general purpose converters seem like very useful ideas here, with the former doing more stuff but being a bit cluttered, the latter not working for me unfortunately but has a simple interface. I like the idea of not having to install some bloated reader software just to support some random file type that I rarely make use of.

My rather disturbed housemate used to play a similar game called "***** or Ball"... - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the helloworld thing that i heard about along time ago, i tired it out and it does media encoding from your account profile from the backend. You just login to the site, upload the media you want and specific the medium you want it to encode to, which is pretty quick, and download it, or show it on your profile. You could even add it to your Video Blog if you are referring to something or just recording yourself. You can even broadcast LIVE over the their site and go on the frontpage. The system actually can convert multiple file formats in the background , or you can store your media too on your account. I've tried it out and seems to work pretty good.

http://mark0.net/onlinetrid.aspx
Just upload a file (don't do that if the file contains senstive data, or simply if you have any kind of privacy concerns), and it will show his best guesses about its filetype, along with some eventual remakrs and related URLs.
Standard disclaimer:
It's a tool of mine.
Bye! - bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been looking for an open source solution for this... to integrate into a site. Users can upload in almost any format, site converts to text and saves in MySQL for a FULLTEXT search. If anybody knows of anything like this please reply.
- sally00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First thing that came to mind when I saw "Online Converters" was a site that helps you convert millimeters to yards or something.
I know I'm not the only one who thought that. - dmatrix445, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1media-convert is extremely useful, easy to figure out and has more options then most know what to do with!
I've been using it for awhile now, good digg - aghman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the holy grail here would be some sort of integration with a media player, at least for the media converters.
I know I'll be taking advantage of the web tools listed. Awesome stuff. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1dbpoweramp
- greganalytic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd actually like to try to write a few converters like these. I'm hoping you guys can give me some ideas for ones that would be useful. What do you need?
- Mihai12345, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, Super is one of the best converters I've used; here's the link: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

It's about 300-500 hits / days. It's nice because thus there are also many files of strange filetypes uploaded, so there's a lot of opportunities to "discover" new ones and add them to the DB of recognized ones.
Bye! - Capzap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i love you smashing magazine!!!
- Flatlineskillz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for useful...
Anyone know of any free standalone audio converters. I want to convert a very large FLAC file to play on my ipod. I tried doing it with an online one and it would have taken 1.5 hours. - oesj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep. get dbpoweramp. but make sure you get version 10 (not 11) as they try to charge you for mp3 encoding in version 11.
~o - Caffeinate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, can they help you lose email, too? LOL. You'd better contact the White House.
