Officially WOW: Magnificent 360° View of a A380 Flight Deck
gillesvidal.com — Step into the most modern "front office" available on a jetliner today. See the 360 ° view of an A380 flight test aircraft's cockpit. One of the coolest things I've seen lately.
- 2132 diggs
- digg it
- alanocu, on 03/07/2008, -10/+13that's pretty darn amazing! thanks for posting this!
- syxle, on 03/07/2008, -18/+3http://digg.com/world_news/Suicide_Submission_v2_0
- carguy84, on 03/07/2008, -0/+51) HUD is sweet
2) The tailcam is sweet
3) Side yoke unsweet
4) FSX should have this plane... - 80hd, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2The cupholders were huge extra $$$
- cawpin, on 03/07/2008, -2/+2Where's the ejection seats? They're definitely going to need those when these things start falling out of the sky. I recommend against ANYONE flying Airbus. I worked on them for over a year and the company has no idea what it's doing.
- mediamelt, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I'm proud to think this is cool.
- seejunaid, on 03/07/2008, -10/+2I just love this Bird...
- Audacitor, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5On a completely unrelated note, did anyone know that bird used to be slang woman? Like today's chick or babe.
- shortyjacobs, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3Mind......blown.
- Iwantawii, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3let's bring it back!!
- patik, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Yes, and isn't it still used in Britain? (Not all the time, but often enough that it doesn't raise eyebrows.)
- Audacitor, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5On a completely unrelated note, did anyone know that bird used to be slang woman? Like today's chick or babe.
- webaddict, on 03/07/2008, -5/+18Well since they won't let us go play with the captain anymore and instead put him behind barricaded walls, this is a great way to see the inside of a cockpit. There you go all you future terrorists, learn it well.
No but seriously, this was way cooler than I thought it would be. Looks amazing and the 360 degree adds a nice touch.- peterkay, on 03/07/2008, -6/+1I too thought it would act as a very good manual for those wannabe hijackers.
- DTXT, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Douchebag!
- sap959, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Touché!
- DTXT, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Douchebag!
- Iwantawii, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1That cockpit door doesn't look too barricaded. The slide lock is on par with most bathroom stalls!
- castevens, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Joey, Do you like movies about gladiators?
- peterkay, on 03/07/2008, -6/+1I too thought it would act as a very good manual for those wannabe hijackers.
- ivankraszl, on 03/07/2008, -11/+4It looks like it's from the 50's..
- geekchic, on 03/07/2008, -4/+2Technology was more reliable then :)
- DeskFlyer, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7For comparison, here's the cockpit of a 1959 Boeing 707: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Qantas-(Qantas-Foun ...
- ivankraszl, on 03/07/2008, -5/+2Sllightly better. :) Still looks like a low budget sci-fi.
- 2oonhed, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1I think you got it backwards.......low budget sci-fi's look like airplane cockpits?
- ivankraszl, on 03/07/2008, -5/+2Sllightly better. :) Still looks like a low budget sci-fi.
- Jishory, on 03/07/2008, -1/+2look at all of that glass, no way it is even from the 90s. theres more money in that cockpit then either of us will ever see.
- FluffyWolf, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Yes, I had expected a more modern look. All Airbus cockpits has a similar look I believe I have heard, so that switching planes would be easy/safer for the pilot, so the cockpit might have been "designed" in the early 90's or 80's. Well obviously it isn't designed, but rather "constructed".
- slimjim5811, on 03/07/2008, -4/+32What does *that* button do?
- BossKey, on 03/07/2008, -2/+25It lights up a sign that says "Please do not press this button again"
- Audacitor, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3How cool would it be if when there were popups explaining what everything did?
- patik, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1There's a joke in there somewhere about Clippy offering to automate the task for you.
- Cytranic, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4You push it once, you have to push it again every 108 minutes.
- bryik, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Um, we need that to live.
- thefallofbrad, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3cup holders activated!
- webchase, on 03/07/2008, -12/+0I heard a Saudi prince bought one of these for a flying palace. Its just hard to imagine one person buying one of these massive machines for his own personal use. I also read that the pentagon turned turned Boeing down on a contract that they gave to the Airbus company which is a EU project. Cool picture.
- derian22, on 03/07/2008, -20/+37this was just on the front page, ass.
- xero9, on 03/07/2008, -5/+11Well I didn't see it then. Maybe you should get outside instead of browsing Digg all ***** day
- Fxer, on 03/07/2008, -3/+5I agree.
- xero9, on 03/07/2008, -5/+11Well I didn't see it then. Maybe you should get outside instead of browsing Digg all ***** day
- iceeblue, on 03/07/2008, -18/+82Dugg because it is not a duplicate for me. Why does everyone get so upset over duplicates. If you have seen it move past it. If enough people like it will go to the front page for a second visit, so what? Why does this generate so much venom in people?
Anyway neat 11 cup holders!- xero9, on 03/07/2008, -2/+9This is Digg, where the whiny little babies of the internet come and voice their dislike for stuff
- supertom, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Agreed
- lystig, on 03/07/2008, -2/+5Duplicate! I just saw a comment like this!
- Stingr, on 03/07/2008, -2/+0"Anyway neat 11 cup holders!"
Big deal. My Odyssey has like 18 of them. :)- Dubbsacc, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I bet it could fly too.
- lexbaby, on 03/07/2008, -4/+3Because if I get the impression that I've seen all the stories (or a good portion of them) on Digg, there will be no reason to come to this site anymore.
- iceeblue, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Actually that is a valid point. I don't now how much of an average user I am but I come to digg about three times a day and I perhaps see on or two stories that I have read before so I am not bothered by it. At higher usage levels I guess it could get annoying but I think on this kind of site you will always have duplicates. I still do not know how we are served by constantly pointing it out. I think that their is a gap between the power user and the average user.
- dood, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2If by "power user" you mean "person with nothing but time to complain", then yeah. I've tried to keep quiet about the dupe-whiners, but I think it's hit a boiling point for me. Seriously, they're getting someone else to do their surfing for them, finding interesting links that they can choose to view, and then they gripe about it being imperfect?
- iceeblue, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Actually that is a valid point. - MilkDaddy, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Shoot, you beat me to it. I wonder if they have a bunch of loose change and lint at the bottom of them like my truck?
- Zedizdead, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5Since I have a life, I don't get to visit digg on a daily basis. So thanks for posting it again!
- diggimator, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1Dude, the previous submission had over 5000 diggs, literally. It's not like it was invisible. If you missed this one, you can also find other high ranking submissions in this section by going here:
http://digg.com/images/technology/popular/365days
In the meanwhile, digg works better if more people buried articles under Duplicate Story. The option exists for a reason: it makes digg work better.
- INDOAZZ, on 03/07/2008, -5/+5Not many people get to view this in person. This is pretty dynamic. One question though. Is it me or is that door not very HIGH security?
- pjsk8, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2No, it's got a lock. Cabinet secured.
- covertress, on 03/07/2008, -6/+6...says the pre-recorded in-flight greeting, "...now just sit back and relax. The new A380 is so technologically advanced, nothing can possibly go wrong...go wrong...go wrong..."
- rspeed, on 03/07/2008, -1/+6Where nothing can possiblie go wrong. PossiBLY go wrong. That's the first thing that's ever gone wrong.
- seanpackage, on 03/07/2008, -5/+105Seriously? This has nothing to do with World of Warcraft?
- Texmurphy01, on 03/07/2008, -7/+0Is that a question or a statement?
- rspeed, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7This is why we have a question mark; sentence structure isn't always enough.
- honorableSimon, on 03/07/2008, -2/+8I know, I was disappointed too... sort of.
- BossKey, on 03/07/2008, -2/+3Easy to tell...if it was about that, the title would have said WoW, not WOW
- boonesfarm, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7It's the new epic flying mount for Lich King. Better start farming.
- doshindude, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2I read the title really fast and interpreted it as something like: "WoW coming to 360."
- gooberguy, on 03/07/2008, -1/+0sadly i did as well :(
- fluxingtontheIV, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1i thought the A380 was gonna replace the griffons or something
- Texmurphy01, on 03/07/2008, -7/+0Is that a question or a statement?
- AlphaDrake, on 03/07/2008, -7/+6Aside from this being a repost, the plane is also NOT old as stated a few times.
The Airbus A380 made it's first commercial flight last year (2007).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380 - minimalist147, on 03/07/2008, -16/+1wow, what am I supposed to do with this information?
Here is a vid of takeoff: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU&feature=rel ...- Shizlanski, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Well played
- rspeed, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4Oh, I see. You posted a blind link to YouTube claiming it was relevant to the story, but instead the video is the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley.
VERY CLEVER!
- Fizban140, on 03/07/2008, -13/+4Buried, this keeps coming up on Digg and it wasn't that impressive in the first place.
- sfury, on 03/07/2008, -8/+26i'm in your aeroplanez
pushing randomly lots of buttonz- mattsegal, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2no, you arent sorry
- TripleAStacked, on 03/07/2008, -7/+7peace of cake....I can land this baby using my keyboard...
- chris4404, on 03/07/2008, -3/+11Wait a minute, this isn't Azeroth.
- martynda, on 03/07/2008, -6/+1I want one!
- Knucklecallus, on 03/07/2008, -19/+45http://digg.com/design/Must_see_Airbus_A380_cockpi ...
Um... Wow...
Really, how many times can this appear on digg?- tekmonkey, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1A rhetorical question, innit?
- rspeed, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4Or perhaps it's a challenge!
- ricopicouk, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I see what you did there...
- rspeed, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4Or perhaps it's a challenge!
- lexbaby, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3An interesting question to me is how many people dugg BOTH posts? Are we really so saturated with information we forget stories, at least stories we found digg worthy, in 30 days? I'm not slamming anyone. Just thinking out loud. I find it an interesting phenomenon that a website with 5300+ diggs can get 1100+ diggs a month later. Is Digg readership increasing at that rate?
- 2oonhed, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1maybe this is just a really cool item
- tekmonkey, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1A rhetorical question, innit?
- strikerK, on 03/07/2008, -7/+29How dare you resize my window.
man that ticks me off.- TheCheeks, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4Firefox, disable Javascript moving and resizing windows.
- staffa, on 03/07/2008, -1/+6Yea nice, but still websites that pull that bs are not worth the going to, ever.
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Really? It had quite the opposite effect on me. Not a whole lot of websites I've visited have resized my browser like this one, but when it happens it piques my curiosity as to what's going to load onto the page, like "Stand up and take note."
- TheCheeks, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4Firefox, disable Javascript moving and resizing windows.
- ufia, on 03/07/2008, -3/+30I can't find the topless air stewardess in that picture.

- apersaud, on 03/07/2008, -10/+2That is one THICK laptop on that desk. Are you sure this is a modern aircraft?
(Steve should send them a MacBook Air) - Mikhail101, on 03/07/2008, -7/+3what does that button do? what bout that one?
- colombianbludmn, on 03/07/2008, -5/+7should this be on the internet?
- ElGanyan, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7Absolutely.
I remember back when I was a kid (80s) being allowed to visit the cockpit midflight and actually sit in the pilots chair (yes the co-pilot was there eying my eager fingers), sadly those days are gone thanks to the "terrorists," fear mongers and their obedient sheeple like you.
- ElGanyan, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7Absolutely.
- sonicularulus, on 03/07/2008, -5/+11this was on digg before.
but still cool and deserves a double digg - nilsalb, on 03/07/2008, -4/+3Where's the steering wheel?
- xero9, on 03/07/2008, -1/+2PLEASE never get your CPL, and if you do, please let us know what airline :)

- Wynner3, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1as did I, lol.
- ajhugh, on 03/07/2008, -5/+5Surely you can't be serious.....

- gooberguy, on 03/07/2008, -4/+0is this the spot where we reply to eachother and make a huge thread and say bs stuff
- 2oonhed, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1no. this is where you throw lines from the movie "Airplane"

- shadowblade989, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Just like how you know what 100+ buttons on your keyboard do: labels
- Krpano, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2he doesnt...
- Seidoger, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Countless hours of training in 20 million $ flight simulators?

- topace3000, on 03/07/2008, -2/+9Good thing the wow's official. It made me feel kinda sick twisting the view around, actually.
- binford04, on 03/07/2008, -2/+18Which button is the inflatable co-pilot?
- Swarms, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4So it can fly in the HOV lane?
- ArmandoM, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6No, in case the pilot, co-pilot, and navigator all eat fish for dinner.
- BTConan, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Make sure you have someone who can speak jive, too.
- ArmandoM, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6No, in case the pilot, co-pilot, and navigator all eat fish for dinner.
- Swarms, on 03/07/2008, -1/+4So it can fly in the HOV lane?
- PauliAnna, on 03/07/2008, -2/+3Just don't hit the red button.
- centran, on 03/07/2008, -2/+11This has been on before so to answer some of the common questions.
They fly it with the joystick. The little red "fire" button of the joystick is for Autopilot. The joysticks can be used together. There is a way to override one or the other and the computer fixes "stupid" actions like pushing the joystick in opposite directions. To the left or right is a compartment for an escape rope.
If you look straight up... having those alarms go off would be very bad. If you look futher back... yes that is a camera.- MozzieTS, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3that lens hood looks like one of a canon. Is that a GL2 hooked up?
- negativefx, on 03/07/2008, -1/+3holy *****, how'd you figure that out? common sense?
- odiego, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Ok, I have a legitimate question.. What if the Pilot is Right Handed?
- knightblade2oo4, on 03/07/2008, -2/+14oh i know you did not just resize my browser window...
- kru1e, on 03/07/2008, -2/+4Is that a Macbook AIR?
- soot, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Its so thin!
- BossKey, on 03/07/2008, -1/+2All those buttons, and only one USB port...
- Seidoger, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1More like Macbook EARTH
- cl2yp71c, on 03/07/2008, -2/+10I'm looking for any cavities from which snakes can crawl out of.
- ccoch, on 03/07/2008, -7/+1this is old.
- kaosethema, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3ok, so how do you start it up?
- mrjit, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4I like the lunch bag holder directly above the pilots seat. I need one of those in my car.
- soot, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3That big purple thing in the windshield must be a power level scouter
- 22magnum, on 03/07/2008, -10/+6cool. now all i need is a box cutter.
...to soon?- aoru, on 03/07/2008, -3/+2Too soon? no. Not funny? yes. You fail.
- dfective, on 03/07/2008, -1/+5What *****, no cup holder for the beer...
- sharkd, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Actually, there's about 12 cup holders in view. Which is 12 more than my car has.
- Ryan166, on 03/07/2008, -1/+6Airbus? Dey took our jobzz!!!!
- undersky, on 03/07/2008, -1/+22just fyi, the funny round bulge thing in front of each QWERTY keyboard is wrist rest.
the weird looking handle under the window is window opener
the circular handle next to it is steering wheel for taxing
the rope on the ceiling is for pilot to emergency exit the plane thru window (escape rope)
the seats look quite tight but actually move all the way back for easy access
there is a laptop pull up tray in front of each seat.
the red button on the joystick is to gain control of the plane (from the other pilot).
oh thee is also a ceiling mount camera looking at the cockpit, this is for passengers to look at the cockpit via the inflight entertainment system. there is also a camera installed on the tail overlooking the plane. how awesome is that!- ElGanyan, on 03/07/2008, -0/+4The Airbus I flew on last summer had the "rudder cam" feature which they left running during takeoff and landing. Quite a unique experience.
- gilbot53, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I fly Etihad to Abu Dhabi from the UK in Airbuses and they have a nose cam available the in-flight entertainment; fantastic during landing. Once, the cam gave us a perfectly framed shot of the ground controller waving us into the stand. After he crossed his sticks and we stopped he scratched his balls. I mean he really gave them a good seeing-to. Everyone was laughing their asses off . A great end to a great flight.
- joepodcaster, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7The video camera in the cockpit reminds me of a story I heard about a captain who used to (back in the day) leave the cockpit door open for takeoff so the passengers could look up the aisle and see what was going on. Then, just before takeoff he would slip on a big, hairy gorilla-hand he got from some costume shop somewhere. He'd reach up with this gorilla arm and slowly push the throttles up for takeoff while the passengers watched. He got quite a few laughs, but he also got talked to by his chief pilot.
I'd like to hear from someone who can verify this story and maybe put me in touch with the pilot who used to do this. I'd like to talk to him for my podcast. He might have been with Western airlines ... he must be retired by now. If you know anyone who knows more about this, please ask them to email me at joepodcaster@gmail.com. Thanks

Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
