- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51article coming soon.. just wanted to give everyone an early preview
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Those comments look freaking AWESOME!
But..
Does anyone else find it funny that kevin uses adblock on his own site? :D - kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6support at digg - we'll look into it. thx!
- reiggin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6So, Kevin, is this using AJAX? If so, how hard was it to implement? A short article detailing it and the changes necessary would be great.
- IanCube, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's awesome, a huge improvement over the current system, I really like it. Great work.
Kevin, I need to get in contact with you about an issue I have with Digg, is there a way I can do this? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3digg team... keep the "yellow" color for the comments.
- kev26, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Holy *****, that is probably the coolest comment system I've ever seen. Shouldn't be surprised that digg is doing something like this. Nice work boys.
- Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@caboose
"I think the amout of time to edit the comment should be extended - what if I don't see my mistake until a few hours afterward? Or the next day?"
I would guess so you can't do stupid stuff like flame people and then retract it. Most of the Digg comments are flames anyway.
Perhaps we can have a comment filter for the ridiculous "lame" "no digg" "OMG It's (Google | Apple) changelog" and "old news" comments? That's what burying a story is for people. The comments are for, you know, reasoned discussion? - fino35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2daz i think you're a bit late.
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Crashed my 1.5.0.1
Damn QT. Love the New Features and look. Spiffy ++++++Digg - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's really needed is quote/reply.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Finally!
Oh, and congrats. The sneak preview video of the comments was the first thing to successfully crash my Firefox in a month. - dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1too many people digging it, no digg :P
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When is this comment box going to be longer than 6 lines? A longer textbox encourages people to write longer, more thoughtful posts. Suggest at least doubling it to 12 lines. That way you would have one up on slashdot, which only has 11.
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks awesome!
How about adding a live spell check feature similar to MS Word? - rudolphdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not fan of comment system because of default setting for "sort by date (0+ diggs or higher)...
If we can set our own default great, if not I don't want to be told I can't automatically see all comments. The community here is the draw, not 85% of the stories. - spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look out Slashdot! I say this as a long time Slashdot user (317220) who thinks Digg's current comment system sucks. Digg is entering the territory Slashdot should have been in years ago. Now Digg needs some way of improving story quality; I'm thinking some sort of way to attach alternatives to queue stories, which could replace the originals in the queue/frontpage if enough people voted them up (so people could vote against exclamation points and blog spam links while still voting for the story). With that implemented, I think Digg would be quantifiably better than Slashdot in every way (assuming of course that the new comment system improves the quality of discussion posted here). Don't stop here, Kevin! There's so much more that could be done. Keep innovating and you'll be passing Slashdot in no time.
- llamagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why did this just go to the top again?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the system I've been waiting for. Now just implement the system to disallow people with constant bad comment feedback to comment, and you'll be all the way there. Great work Digg Crew.
- Aooogah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Congratulations, you have made a system that is better than the official Star Wars Galaxies forums. :)
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great.. forums... /meh.
oh, and dijjer your video!!
http://127.0.0.1:9115/http://sjc.videos.revision3.com/diggnation/coming_soon.mov - brightmarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey by the way guys , you can save any YouTube videos with http://www.savetube.com ( it has tools to send it to your ipod too i think )
- tke248, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would love to see the comments with the most diggs rise to the top, good work on your new system!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's so awesome, it gives you 160 seconds to change your post. Digg++
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the new comment system. (Edit comments has been a need for a very long time). My only concern is the rendering time for the pages. With all of that Java / AJAX stuff in there how much will have to loaded into memory for the page to function at optimal speed. Anyway awesome update, keep it up.
- dazman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See, this is what happens when the creators of the software actually use the software they make.
The changes are spot on. Although, it's still lacking a way to mass ignore people. - yihpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great...
On Slashdot I usually browse the comments without reading the actual story.
On Digg I usually visit the link without looking at the comments.
Looks like I'll be spending twice at much time at Digg now...*sigh*
Oh, and great video! - sierranovember, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this'll make flaming SOOO much easier
- tekmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank God for threaded comments, perhaps the discussions will become a little more intelligible now that they're actually manageable. ;-)
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1About friggin time. All I wanted was threading, and you're giving us so much more!
I like that individuals can only thumbs up or thumbs down a post. The rating didn't really make sense, and why should I be able to mod someone up by +3? Obviously everyones going to just do ++Max or --Max, so get rid of the inbetweens! Great move! - hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks good
- Fly1m1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice!
- lambda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DIGGING THE COMMENTS...YOU JUST BLEW MY MIND!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't even try without QT7 installed. I'm not sure what people are having an orgasm over...you can rate comments now, it just isn't very pretty. If diggs don't tie back to the user in some way then this is hardly on the level of /.
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the amout of time to edit the comment should be extended - what if I don't see my mistake until a few hours afterward? Or the next day?
Other then that, exciting stuff. Can't wait to use it :) - mr_mechanics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you think people will now actually look at what they typed, realize it was stupid and pointless, and not post?
- broknman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how the diggs affect your ranking. Or IF they do at all.
I wonder why there is a limit on editing comments - Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If your Firefox crashed it's probably due to one of two things:
1) You're running some ancient version of Quicktime. Make sure you're running the latest Quicktime v7.0.4 or the latest Quicktime Alternative
2) Your system is VERY slow and can't play back MPEG-4 AVC (AKA H.264) very well. It is VERY CPU intensive and Quicktime is an absolute CPU hog when playing it. - Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seumas: It could be that your Quicktime plugin DLLs are old in your Firefox plugins folder. Or you could have some conflicting extensions or plugins. Try starting Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode (firefox.exe -safe-mode) and see if it happens.
It plays perfectly fine for me and I use the latest Quicktime Alternative. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me somewhat of the comment system of macrumors.com but better. I love the ability to show and hide comments.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why didn't he say "New digg comment systm"?
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> digg team... keep the "yellow" color for the comments.
Ditto. The yellow background is high contrast and provides good separation from the rest of the page elements. - nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks pretty awesome. Like others have posted, I'm a little concerned that the load time might take even longer, but I think adding this functionality is well worth the few extra seconds it might take to load.
Keep up the great work! - bobb243, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SWEET!
- clokwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The edit timer is in theory a good idea, but incorrectly executed. I think what you actually need is the ability to edit comments indefinitely - so long as no one has commented on the comment. Once a thread has started, you lock the parent comment. I designed a social news site in Taiwan which does exactly this. I'm frankly surprised that kevin has not gone this route as it seemed perfectly obvious to me.
- Rio517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At this point, I wouldn't even know how to make digg better. Oh wait, I have an Idea, get ride of the image codes, or at least make them not match case.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll reserve judgement until I've tried it. The risk of threading the comments is that it could turn Digg in to a generic discussion board, where people comment on other comments instead of sticking to commenting on the submission. I'm guilty of that too. OTOH, discussion is a good thing.
Good to see Digg continues to evolve.
Now if someone will just tell me how long I have to deal with these damn captchas. - iamserious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeez, read my mind already! Yea! new user comment system. Now . . . with KARMA!
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I noticed that the whole page didn't reload after submitting a comment. That's one of the minor annoyances of the current system. I hope that's one of the new features.
