----------------------------------------------------------------------
My sincerest thanks to the mammoth positive feedback from the diggers. You guys have been very generous in your comments. I appreciate them all, even the negatives. Really makes doing something like this a whole lot more worth it when people actually digg it so hard core.
1. WHY DID I DO IT?
I didn't work on this so I can get a job at either digg or revision3! lol I already have a job doing exactly what I did for this digg intro. I'm a motion graphics/print designer. Now if a job working for them cats did come out of it, would I turn that down?! WOULD YOU!!! But that was not the motivation for doing so. I did it, cause like many of my faithful brethren here, I love digg and the diggnation show. Favorite site on the net. Imagine life on the net before digg...that's my point. I thought the current intro, while good for an audio podcast, was lacking in the visual department and that was no secret to anyone. Diggnation deserves more cause the show rocks and in speaking to the guys at digg, this was something that they had been planning on, revamping the diggnation intro, so the timing was perfect.
2. "IT LOOKS LIKE THIS (or) IT LOOKS LIKE THAT"...
I do not have cable television. Yes, as hard as that is to believe, I do not. Why? Time. I'm a busy guy, and sitting down for an hour to watch a TV show would never happen. What do I do then? Newsgroups. I use that like a poor man's DVR. Smallville, Lost, Battlestar Galactica...I get them all and watch them on my schedule (sounds like a sales pitch). Besides, when I do have spare time, I'm playing my 360...much more interactive than passive TV viewing. So, the point is, I've never seen "Attack of the Show" or any other shows mentioned, so if there are elements of there of something looking similar, I guarantee you, it's not because I was ripping anyone off. Undeniably, there are certain trends in motion graphics, like 3d layer compositing and such, that are cool, that's why people use it. New technology makes new things possible. So it comes down to personal style. I probably like the same kinds of design that those guys do. Nothing wrong in that.
3. HOW DID YOU DO IT?
My arsenal includes a few main apps: After Effects 7, Motion 2 and Cinema 4D 9.5 and sometimes Combustion. Those are my bread and butter, then of course comes Photoshop and Illustrator and various AE plugin packages. No, there was absolutely no template elements used in this whatsoever...this was built from scratch. While I am a graduate of design school, my focus then was Print design. I've learned the art of motion graphics from the school of hard knox and the school of observation.
4. "IT'S TOO SHORT (&) MUSIC SUCKS (&) THE DIGGS SHOULD GO HIGHER"...
Those are among the top constructive criticisms given. They've all been addressed. I've already been working on making it longer, looking at different music and yes, the diggs now go higher. All very good observations. I used the current audio (a quick chopped up version) so people would immediately identify with it. It's 15 seconds long because I got my idea across in that period of time before knowing if it was going to actually become something after all my time producing it. It was by no means meant to be perfect right off the bat, and probably won't be "perfect" when I make the final, but that's that.
So there you have it. Again, you guys have been tremendous with your words. - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16kevin should just hire digg users as his video editing team
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12babelfish...if you listen to the audio, Kevin says, "diggnation.com" it would be stupid for the visuals to say something different.
- sam54m, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I wish it was a bit longer. At least 15 seconds long.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Looks like an edited version gonna be used. Good Job
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's pretty much the ***** awesomest thiing I've seen all week.
I, for one, would love to see this on diggnation, much, MUCH better than static image thing they have going on.
You're my hero. - metalica77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5funny thing that video is now used nice work
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12YES!
i am so sick of hearing....This is My favorite story of all time, mkay.."
"when it has the word zombies in the title, and i don't want to do it!"
"eerie zombie kevin"
"ddddddddd diggnation.com" - Obsydian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was great. I do agree that it would be great if it was the same length as the normal intro, but thank goodness for this. I love diggnation, but come on, the intro sucks ass. This one is way better. Hope you guys use this. digg++
- asylum24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I wish it was a bit longer. At least 15 seconds long."
actaully i thought it was the perfect intro length... your typical tv show intro shouldnt really be any longer than 30-45 secs. this is a video blog... something sweet and simple to get to the good stuff...not to dog the creator or anything because it is awesome, but after awhile people will know how long it lasts and will just skip it in teh first place im sure. - dottedline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4great job! I think Kevin and Alex should consider it
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Very nice.. they need SOMETHING for their intros. You should have it show an LA cityline, and then have it toll over to a S.F. cityline.. or vice versa.. since they are always going back and forth from those locations when they tape a show.
Damnit Alex you should move to northern California.. save Rev3 some MONEY! - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very impressive!
I know a lot of you guys would like to try your hand at this stuff, and let me tell you, as a motion graphic designer myself, it IS fun... but VERY time consuming, and it takes a lot of trial and error to put stuff out as good as Xboxing did here, unless he's using some sort of template thing I've never heard of. :)
Still, the degree of professionalism in this project is outstanding -- Xboxing is obviously experienced in this realm, as none of the foibles of mograf newbies are present (sharp stops and starts, angled motion paths) and the veneer of pro is everywhere (subtle zooms, mattes, etc.)
As you can see, I'm impressed! - pmace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No kidding - I think it's a nice touch that they used something created by a fan.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can see a whole bunch of people going out and getting After Effects 7, Motion 2, Cinema 4D, etc... thinking to themselves I can create awesome stuff like this. After a few days go by they will realize they need one more tool in their arsenal which is not so easy to come by.... talent.
- soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very nice, reminds me of the stuff on ZDnet/TechTV/G4, ever work for ziff davis?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://72.10.36.16.nyud.net:8090/users/eden//digg/digg_intro.mov
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jaxor said "Awesome animation! This should be submitted for an opening page on Digg/Diggnation! Good job!
+Digg"
NO. Having an "intro" for your website is retarded. Sites that do that don't get my business ever again. - foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Beautiful, Kevin and Alex should use this.
- dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Much needed, Kevin listen up!
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ALSO! - you should add the picture they use on the current intro on a billboard or something.
Just an idea, keep at it! - PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet Video, found via Video Google
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent animation, however, the sound does not line up with the animation very well at all, except for the "diggnation.com".
Maybe you could rework the audio as well?
But overall, brilliant work! - unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=diggnation&page=1&lv=0&so=0
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only problem I would see with something like this is that the quality of the entire production needs to match... If one part is crappy, the whole thing will suffer. If they use this, they'll also need to make sure the quality of the video they create matches, or it will look.... weird. They'll need to use professional equipment, lighting, makeup, set, etc. Right now, they use a DV cam in someone's living room, and you can tell. MacBreak is an example of an awesome vidcast, almost to the point of going overboard, and the quality of all points is delivered equally.... cameras, audio, lighting, etc...
- 06metzp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow, plenty of comments but I might as well add my thoughts, eh?
Very good, I recommend it to the rev3 crew (as if my opinion is authoritative), but with the following suggestions:
The intro could be a bit longer, maybe 5 seconds or so, and include more of Kevin's voice to even things out
work in video of the show somehow, maybe zoom in on one of the buildings' windows for a moment and have it playing behind one of them.
Also, the name Kevin Rose should be put somewhere else in the intro, I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't seen it in the still shot below. The numbers rolling up draws my eye up there and I had to actively watch for it to catch it. The first few times, as I passively viewed the intro, I did not notice Mr. Rose's name at all. Alex's, however, stood out, perhaps because of his voice occurring at the same time.
overall, though, a good effort and if I were making Diggnation I would seek out the use of it. - thor17usa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe Kevin and Alex will start using this intro. It is very nicely done and looks awesome.
They should definately use it if they choose this story in their next episode. - pmace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really nicely done
- fifaigor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really nice.
- SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good intro hope kevin considers it :)
- Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hot diggity damn.
- magicaltrout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1first time i've seen everyone that posts agree on one thing.
congratulations you win. - bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has a nice flow, with good use of color and negative space, so that even though there are many elements coming in and out of the scene, it does not overwhelm. I would also suggest a few more seconds be added. Kevin Rose's name seems to be competing with the large digg counter, which is why it can be missed the first time you see it. That is exactly what I did. In order for it to match the visibility of Alex Albrecht's name, it needs to be on a relatively inactive composition. This could be where the extra few seconds are added. Overall, this is a very good piece. It carries the energy and anticipation of the forthcoming show. I don't agree that you need additional visual elements, especially clips of previous shows, as that would be distracting.
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wtf it says this was posted "5 seconds ago"
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You didn't hear the growling in the background from the zombie dog?
- benmay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Done a nice job mate
- lostremote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work in TV, and that's network grade. Kick ass.
- ranovrwhledancN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin and Alex should definitely take a look at this as a new intro. Very well done.
- cmchavez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's sweet!
i hate you and your superior creativity... :) - slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice job. Definitely has the revision 3 feel to it.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, this is great. It is MUCH better than the current introduction. I would be dissapointed if Kevin and Alex didn't replace their current intro with this one.
I agree that it could be a bit longer, but that isn't a big issue.
What does need to be touched up before it can be used is the audio track. It feels a little choppy, which comes from it being pieces of the original song cut up. If Kevin and Alex were to take this intro and respin the audio track for it, that would be amazingly perfect.
Dugg, of course! I hope to see this in next week's Diggnation ;) - blink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice motion graphics intro (liked the other stuff in your portfolio as well!).. honestly i think the intro length is fine - if you must, just add a few seconds, but as all motion artists know part of a project's challenge is the timing and pace.. if it goes on for too long then it might seem draggy, and especially if you see it on a weekly basis. i think xboxing/eden is on the right track :)
- xb00t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree with iceblink2...
- PlancksCnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beautiful! Just a couple of suggestions from my perfectionist eyes. The dig spinner shoud accellerate, not just be a constant speed. I agree about it going up to around 2 or 3 thousand as well. I also like the idea from unitedstations about a shot with digg in a browser window, but I don't know where it would fit. And finally, the timing of the "dignation.com" thing just drives me nuts. I think it should do the random-blinky text as it does, but start when the voice says "dddddd..." Then time each syllable so it solidifies when the voice comes to it.
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"what the hell did the people say? it was cool and modern and ***** but the people talking was really random and weird. no digg!"
HAHA! Oh man I had to laugh at that...
Very good job xboxing! Its marvellous! I hope that they use it and/or hire you! - warrenpeace416, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is beautiful! Good work! Makes me want to drink a pot of coffee and stay up for days with my Final Cut book and learn. Inspiring! I hope they use it.
- andrewd2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope Kevin Rose has a serious look at this. Very well done. ++digg
- JCrichton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is cool......even after having it play over and over and over.....if my friend and i ever do a podcast i would love to have this guy do our intro
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now that is pretty.
nice work xboxing - thegrim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG ..how sick is that video.I love it.Digg must've really inspired this guy to do this much AWESOME work.Looks like we have another talented Motion/After Effects guy all over this one.I love when things are just made "right".This would be a sweet intro to like a Video Podcast.Way to go man!
