- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -29/+274I could do better with MS Paint
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -10/+203I just asked the wife "Which actor is this?"
"It isn't. It's computer graphics" she replied.
Not quite as realistic as I hoped then. - marshall007, on 10/12/2007, -5/+176this is even more realistic than that Chinese chick that was on digg a few weeks ago
- hematochezia, on 10/12/2007, -11/+121Sorry for the comment abuse, but we need a mirror:

WTF?? Now the site is working. Ok, digg me down :( - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+88just wait for the massive amount of posts that claim this is "fake" and in fact not done in Photoshop/Maya
but I definitely don't think that this looks like any of the PS3 footage, this is much more realilistic - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+84Looks incredible... but they still haven't gotten the imperfections of the eye quite right yet. Could've used some redness there instead of "all-white" texturing.
- crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73A great job. If anything gives it away it's the pores on the nose. And no matter how realistic a 3d model looks, the gig is up when it starts talking. That's the next step.
- dylanrush, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63@hoaznod:
Nope, I can't tell the difference between a Chinese chick and a Korean chick, but I bet you can't tell the difference between an English dude and a German dude. - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48His use of shadow is the only thing that makes this look realistic. The other "ultrarealistic CG renderings" that have been on Digg have mostly been fully lit, which makes them considerably more impressive.

What happened to the good old "A very good CG render" or even "Photo realistic CG render by Fox Wysocki"?
- MainframeF4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Try to run from the police when they start using this.
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32@ Darkhacker
I can tell by looking at such and such that it's so fake. - Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31/me waits for the slew of diggers to come along and brag about how it looks so fake and that they could tell my looking at such and such.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30The bump mapping really brings out the pores. Shadows happen in real life too, you know.
- Chmura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23his other work "last elf" also looks real
http://img11.picsplace.to/img.php?file=img10/22/17641_1152486791_medium.jpg - sdphost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20really good CGI looks like excessive photoshop/airbrushing on someone.
pretty soon we will be able to CGI unperfectness. - raithetarkon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Thats probobly because you already know its CG....
That would definitely help if you want to know whether its real or not. - BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25I can generally tell the differences between Koreans and Chinese as well as the difference between many different types of "white people." Usually when I'm wrong I am told that while I got the nationality incorrect that their genetics do trace back to the 'race' I originally guessed. It doesn't really matter though because at the end of the day it's a useless ability, race isn't important. We're all human and we're all brothers and sisters.
- DarkMeld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19wow, he even included the pits on the face
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18everything looks good except for the bottom 2 apples.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16His use of lighting is pretty good, actually. "Fully-lit" does not necessarily mean "good"; it might make it easier to spot defects, but it also wouldn't be as striking, artistically. Yes, you can tell it's CG, but he did a damn good job regardless.
- sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15They even put the reflection of a photographer in the guy's eye
- Brenky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18It's good, but it seems as though all of these realistic CG renders that are popping up nowadays have unnecessarily watery eyes.
- ShadowMarth, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24The first poster meant to insult Sony, you see, because of all their "in game footage" long before the PS3 actually arrived, that was unrealistically realistic. Irony? Yes, irony.
- maggiemerc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It looks odd because it isn't a dude but a lady.
- Juntistik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Just looked at my eyes, then the CG. seems pretty spot on to me.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17There's something odd about how the mask rests on his face.
- krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Maybe those articles make it to the front page because they make such grand promises and draw attention to themselves by yelling at us. Either way, I agree, it's annoying.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No problem... I don't look anything like that.
- Tayls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I still have to give it to the "Asian actress" model. Almost perfectly realistic.
- carlosthebest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8wow that is unbelievable, thanks for sharing
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Impressive. The challenging part will be to render that in motion with convincing facial movement. But, I'm sure that's only a matter of time.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@robharper
"@juntistik
That's probably because of all that crying you do."
No, it's from all the mindless staring at computer screens all day. - evlpanda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"3D" is made from a collection of vectors: x, y & z points.
- xXRobbyXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@wojy
dang!!! you should make a tutorial about that - tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's easy for people to say "Oh you can tell it's CG but it's good!" when you knew it was CG in first place.
You flip threw a magazine with this picture in it, and maybe it looks like a celebrity instead of whoever this is. None of you would be able to tell, except maybe those who do this kind of stuff, and even then I doubt it. - winnch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6TECHNICALLY speaking some of the most advanced CG I've seen, particularly in terms of hair and light, has come out of Pixar.
- theseaweedking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7No one would ever go outside ever again!
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Very impressive renders, but I'm always wondering why CG appears to look "too perfect". In real life, stuff is blurry and you rarely have pure white unless it's in the very middle of a highlight. Is there something I'm missing as I can always identify CG if the highlights are too strong.
- billbradford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's the eyes - I haven't seen a "perfect" set of rendered eyes yet. They're always "off" somehow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The trouble with these pics is that they are too perfect. Real pictures are taking at odd angles, with random dirts and grime and odd lighting. They also have backgrounds other than pure black. Reality is never perfect.
- GorillaButler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No worries, this will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER, EVAR replace actual photography.
- atticboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Just what we need... A 3D version of Dane Cook.
- dreamflows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amazing work! Reminds me of:
http://basangpanaginip.blogspot.com/2006/07/worlds-most-photorealistic-vector-art.html - laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the "Song Hye Kyo" is more impressive even though it is a year old. This one is definitely more artistic, but less realistic and less challenging (IMO) since half his face is in shadow.
- Myst3r1o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now this is what videogames will look like, in-game footage, in a few more years... I say by 2010 or so.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One day I'm going to upload a photograph.
- KayinAngel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://kotaku.com/gaming/uncanny-valley/so-long-uncanny-valley-238805.php
kotaku had a story about a nice realistic human cg render last month. in my opinion a better one. - ypyerks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I think the elf is better. There's more light, even looks like it's filtering through trees. Beyond that you can see the fuzziness of his cloak. His pores are better too. Plus, elves are cooler.
