- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Probably not at a school for the blind, or with the Amish.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Wow, that's really, REALLY good! Nice work!
- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28Who is this 'Frodo' you speak of?
- revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Absolutely amazing work, I agree.
But when I see tutorials like this, I kind of read it as...
"Step 1 - Draw Frodo
Step 2 - Color Frodo
Step 3 - Done!"
Though, there's some good drawing/painting techniques in there which are genuinely helpful, but I don't see myself following allowing and coming out as a digital picasso - I can make graphics, not paintings :) - cully, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24gay. 3. Bright or lively, especially in color.
--The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition
So, in other words, this picture is totally, flamingly gay. Seriously, those colors are lively (gay). - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Wish I could do that...
- Closeminded5228, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'm guessing Louis is Lois' brother
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16If you can dream it, you can do it!
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I dreamt I was emperor of the universe.
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14OK... that wins the biggest "sleeper" award. I NEVER thought that I would see something that fantastic when I clicked the link. I wish I could digg it twice.
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11actually the first link you gave is the cg before noise is added. They're both cg. Did you read the article?
- ElkAintMoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Heh, yeah. Reminds me of one of the old "The Tick" comics (which I'm too lazy to scan and post, even if I *could* find it) -- it was a feature lampooning the old "Learn to Draw" books -- "HEY KIDS! Draw the TICK!" The steps (with illustrations) were something like:
1. Draw a tilted oval
2. Draw lines bisecting the oval horizontally and vertically
3. Now, draw the Tick holding the oval!
You're done!
NEXT WEEK! Draw the...
Anyway, maybe not so much of a tutorial, but still amazing... - eatmorgnome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I had a bad Wendy's burger which gave me food poisoning. I dreamed that mayo was flying out of my butt and shot me like a rocket through the clouds.
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16dude, you would never have know that this wasn't a real picture....crazy
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Everyone's a photoshop critic...
You're welcome to do it yourself and use less noise, as I'd like to have a comparison of what you think it would look like.. - jeylux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Honestly though, if i was going to spend hours stairing at a picture i would make sure it had boobs to draw at least.
- Farmer77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The guy who did this can probably get a job anywhere...
- sting2kx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14thats f*ckin awesome
- GWoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well... I wasn't going to.. but OK! You've persuaded me.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5From my opinion, I think if you make graphics, you're more of a digital picasso because Picasso produced more abstract forms of art, while this drawing of Frodo is like Neoclassical or something.
But don't take my word for it! I could be wrong ;) - Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeps, this one is like most genious photoshop tutorial. You still need to practice lots and lots and have some talent as well.
Noone could make something like that only after doing that tutorial. - monkeyBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.wladca.mocny.com/tapety/frodok_1024.jpg
pyrodude: How can you possibly say this is original? He obviously cut-and-pasted that necklace -- it's identical. Also look at the fabric in the final product. Looks identical as well -- pixel for pixel. All this guy did is take a final product and work it backwards to make it look like he started from scratch. He blurred the face a little, added his own "imperfections", a gaussian blur here, a bandage tool there, some more smudging, and finally traced the thing with a pencil tool.
The only thing I'm impressed with is how much work he put into making this look like he really did it. - Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Everyone's a photoshop critic..."
No but everyone has got two eyes and can tell what they like and dont like and I dont like loads of dots visible on a picture so I agree there seems to be a bit too much noise.
On the other hand that is truly amazing. I always look at things like that and imagine myslef doing something great. Inspiring indeed. - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The discription makes me think that the person didn't know that there was a book(s) before the movies...
- Cholito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7it's amazing!!!! I love it :) althou I'm going to try it with The Gimp, its free and....it's free
- gamemaster357, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6wow wonder how long it takes to do it?
- quoigonfishin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow. I suck at Photoshop.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's really fanboy/girl-ish, but it is a good job.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's a fade between the two images in case anyone wants to compare or contrast the two:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5016/comparison2ad.gif - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does the fact that it looks so real mean that we 'brush up' too much on our stars, or does it mean that he's really, really good?
Maybe a bit of both.. - dolson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You wouldn't finish it in time.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's funny, but one of the background matte painters that worked on Return of the King started out doing that restrained image insertion you see on the Star Wars DVD's. He was the menu designer on Episode I which spilled out into the rest of the series. Went from there to LOTR and Daredevil. Can't remember his name, but if you can find his stuff, it's amazing to see how busy his composites are and how simple they were to put together.
These people have such a knack for creating realistic environments out of nothing, it's amazing. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Dig++ ... It makes you appreciate the films that much more. Great submission!
- kankerfist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are single hairs in both pictures that are the exact same.
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's true, but stuff like this, you need to be an artist first. Photoshop is merely your palette and brush.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, etc. are lined up too exact to have been free handed."
Sheesh, everyone's an expert.
You do know there are people who make a living doing portraits, right?

And they use charcoal and chalk.. no digital tricks at all. - dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look at the two images just before he applies the film grain. They look very much like a photoshop job (albiet a very professional one).
The film grain is the magic touch that makes you think there is something much more realistic "beneath" the fuzziness. - pyrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2again you are wrong... the cuts on his face are different, the rocks are different, the teethc are different, his right eye is pointed in different direction, the shading on frodos left shoulder is different in the creases..the nose is pointed differently.... go back to school to see that... no proof... he prob got the lines from that but it is tottaly different..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and who exactly are you to say what's inspirational to anyone but yourself again?
- yoshihama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Scott Moschella's GIMPshop tries to make Gimp's UI more "photoshop-like". It's not perfect, but at least a step in the right direction.
- AndyVenus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's amazing what can be done in photoshop if you know what to do. Amazing work.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, if only Digg allowed pics in comments.
- pyrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2im a member from worth1000 and some people there like meowza could probably do this if he tried but that guy is good.
must have taken him years to learn how to do that.
^^^^ inspires me to get better - hyperwired, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I made a GIF COMPARISON animation highlighting the obvious similarities between the original and the errrr... fake tutorial. open http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7091/frodocomparison5hf.gif . You need to have an eye for detail to be able to properly crit visual work, and you cant just be some noob who thinks they are good at everything. So this tutorial is definitely faked. It is faked pretty well.
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7091/frodocomparison5hf.gif
The guy who faked it forgot to change some of the side details, but instead only focussed on heavily modifying the face. Excessive noise was used on purpose to mask the similarities as well. There is a bit of a colour shift and brightness/contrast as the main "difference effect". Also he moved, shifted the positions of various features by a small amount to an upper distance of about 5-7 pixels from their original positions, but the content of miniscule details still match (such as hair and clothing "strap" textures and bumps). So overall, a decent job at faking, where inexperienced people were successfully fooled. I have no idea why someone would go to such lengths to fake a tutorial. All I can say is STFU n00bz dont post this ***** again or your C: will get delete. - mwmccullough, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"That's pretty nice. But the last image has too much noise..."
That was the first thing I thought when I saw the finished product, but goddamn that's some sweet work. Big F#%$ing props for Frodoshop! - aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not "inspirational" as in inspirational story, but "inspirational" as in their use of CG and cinematography. Got to admit, the visual aspect of the films were pretty special. as is this artwork.
