I've seen the sculpture of the bald man in person. It's 1000% more creepy up close than it looks in the photograph.
This guy has a way of capturing raw human vulnerability in a way that is just plain uncanny. When you stand near one of these sculptures, you are immediately taken aback by the size and then the amazingly lifelike detail. All the while, you could swear that any moment the 'subject' would suddenly come alive and smack you silly for staring. So the viewer is suspended somewhere between sheer amazement and a sort of sickening unease. Its almost like the artist forces you to 'sympathise' by feeling every bit as uneasy and embarassed as the expression on the scupture suggests.
Looking at the display of the woman in bed from the slideshow, one gets the impression that the spectators are just as much a part of the presentation as the scupture itself. Sure enough, the expression of the women is one of fear betwixed with sheer dibelief - the crowd would likely feel the same way.
Powerful stuff. - musters, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21I'm digging this just because you said gargantuan.. I like that word.
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The scultures are amazing and I like the picture of the women smiling and looking at the pregnant woman sculture.
I can't believe how many people are receiving negative diggs for simply stating how much they like this artists work. I went through and gave you a +digg. I'm surprised the topic nazi's haven't rolled in with the "how is this tech related" schpeel. - lucian!, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This guy's stuff is great. I did a story about him and his art on the Planet TV Show. It has a couple of pix that are not in this article. http://www.dailyplanettv.net/vidpods/DPTV-128-2006-02-16.mov Also, here is a link with more gallery photo links. http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/mueck_ron.html
- JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They look like normal people, and I applaud that. We don't all look like models.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They aren't "gross." At least not to me. They are amazing.
- Bigfat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you get a chance to see these in person, DO IT. I saw his exhibition at the Hirshhorn and I was blown away. It's almost disgusting how lifelike these are.
- rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Saw it there too. They had to post a special guard in the room because his stuff was so irresistibly touchable. One of the most remarkable art museum experiences I've had.
- thecorch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's hard to believe that this stuff is actually real. The photography (of the sculptures) is outstanding as well.
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I did see one of his pieces here in D.C. The large oger sitting in the corner. I will say his sack had quite the detail.
- JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"hyper-realist" beats "gargantuan" hands down.
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Washington Post has poor compliance with W3C standards.
Their jobs site also has boat loads of problems with Firefox. I quite often get popups from that Post site telling me that I have not configured Internet Explorer to properly handle new windows. - EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very much so. Looking at one of these things, you get the impression that if it were actually able to move in a human way, you'd probably feel a lot less creeped out.
Or conversely, having one of these jerk around, like a robot, into impossible positions and contortions would *seriously* gross people out. - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I'm surprised the topic nazi's haven't rolled in with the "how is this tech related" schpeel."
Oh I know! They should be all over this with a "Digg is a tech site for tech news." and their usual spew. Too bad they need to behave and realize the results are user elected and are democratic so we all pick what we want to see. - quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That one of the crouching boy (image 9) was in the Millennium Dome in London for the time it was open. It was pretty cool when I saw it there.
- CaffiendCA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The skin is amazing. Down to the pores. Reminds me of the sculpture by Jeff Koons - Made in Heaven. Photo realistic sculpture of the artist and his porn star wife getting it on. Saw it about fifteen years ago. Good thing I got to see it with my parents!
- Henge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those are some of the most amazing sculptures i've ever seen. I can barely draw a stick figure and this guy can recreate humans in huge form and hit every single detail. Incredible.
- JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah...... and the fact that it's a sculpture... that's the size of a car.... doesn't... yeah...
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, you just don't see 'gargantuan' used enough. I digg gargantuan.
I hope Mr. Mueck's work comes somewhere I can see it soon . This realism movement is refreshing.
You can see more at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/ronmueck/ - Paul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5um wow... yeah there is some uncanny stuff going on here but you're right he's on the other side of the valley. It's not uncanny because it's almost real, it's uncanny because its more real than many of us would like to admit...
he does ugly people for a reason... I'm not sure what it is but I'd love to meet the guy. - emrikol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is this what that uncanny valley thing is all about? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley)
- pjsk8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're not gross! Look at the amount of detail in each sculpture! No matter how "ugly" they are by modern-day standards, they're works of extreme beauty in terms of art.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow. Takes some extreme skill to get out of the uncanny valley on that side of things. Impressive.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Amazing skin tones, wow.
- thetbad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3First thought in my mind was Silence of the Lambs. That skin is so REAL!
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indeed. It spoiled it for me too, shame on The Washington Post. Thank goodness for Google images though! Brilliant art.
- tannergdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice! Creepy!
- tciny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh dear lord! Its haunting me!
I just got off writing my diploma thesis, which has Ron Mueck and a number of other Hyperrealists as topic and now this... - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what the hell is wrong with these websites? FFX doesn't seem to work well with it. everytime i click next, half of the screen gets cut. wtf is that?!
- atomicwedgie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow great digg. If I hear of this guy coming around I will certainly go see his goods.
Thing is it will have to be on a Friday because I get the feeling I won't be able to sleep for nights afterward. - modian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope he tries to animate these if he hasn't already.
Really stunning work. - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow.
Also, do a GIS for Ron Muerk. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it was creepy 'cause they're giant. It's "off kilter" in a scalar sense rather than specific features that deviate from human form.
The artist should do a giant Brian Pepper sculpture too. kekeke - lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is incredible. I hope this comes to my town. I wonder where he learned how to do this stuff.
- jamesbenet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More amazing stuff of his. Michelangelo would have loved the materials of today.
http://www.jamescohan.com/artists/ronmueck/index.html?page=1&num_pages=1&image=436 - spindrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll take that pregnant woman over Britney's bearskin brouhaha anyday.
- MrManFitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And now I will have nightmares for at least 12 weeks. Hyper-realistic art is nothing new, but the exaggerated sizes of these sculptures is really engaging and yet perturbing at the same time.
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very, very thin line between genius and insanity.
- dilg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did get to see the old sitting man in the Smithsonian several years ago. Creepy and yet amazingly life-like!
- ultrasuprgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got to see a few of his pieces at the Hirshorn in DC... His work is beyond description. So real - so amazing.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3His stuff is amazing.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what i found amazing is the skin-hair part... how can he does that look like real?!
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy gives 'scalable' new definition. His head and facial detail is incredible.
Beyond gawking at the incredible detail of his work, this artist is a bit of an enigma.
Ron Mueck was a big-screen special effects wizard working on films like the Muppets/David Bowie's Labyrinth (1986). He does not like to draw attention to himself - just his fiber-glass, resin and silicone rubber works of art.
The technical creation of these works of art is ~almost~ as interesting as the works themselves. See the link below for some of the more technical details of his creation of the "Pregnant Woman" in 2002.

Great post! Thanks. - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... but some of them creep me the f*** out.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most artists work on multiple projects at the same time. Some go unfinished for several years while focus is shifted to another piece.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this @ Foundation Cartier in Paris and it is really weird just being next to something so realistic but completely re scaled. If you looked close up you could see freckles on the skin and the hair must have taken forever to do, he must be so greatful for interns willing to work for peanuts. There was also another one with a naked couple huddling togetether about the size of a cat.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The fat man sitting in a corner was on display the MoMA in New York City last summer when I visited. It was one of the most memorable pieces in the gallery and certainly in the museum. It is quite a sight in real life.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These are great.
What's also great is that there aren't any Digg Nazi's complaining that this isn't "Tech News." *cough, cough* Keng? - Hamana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have seen one of his skulptures when i was a few weeks ago in the "Melancholy - Genius and Madness in Art" exhibition. i loved it! the big man had a whole part for himself and he looked so realistic sitting alone in the corner of the white room.
here is the site of the museum, there is also a picture of the skulpture
http://www.melancholieinberlin.org/ - jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder if he does commissioned works. If I were a millionaire, I'd commission a giant vulva for my front yard.
Because I've got the maturity of a 12 year old boy. -
