- CSSCHNEIDER, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I'm specifically floored by the fabricated cityscapes. It's unreal, yet looks completely real.
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4yeah those cityscapes are incredible
- tonicboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68Sorry, but there isn't a single thing on that reel that hasn't been done better in a Hollywood movie. Don't get me wrong, this guy has done it all on his own so his achievement is that much more impressive compared to that of Hollwyood studios which employ hundreds of people and have budgets in the tens of millions. But it's just plain wrong to say that Hollywood can't match this guy's abilities and quality.
- acex23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I agree with tonicboy, I'm pretty sure I've seen everything here done better before, but I think thats a flaw in the article summary not the guy's amazing talent.
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21More importantly, as someone who works with Animation and 3D software, I'll tell you right now there is a reason those things look so amazing. They are all stills. You can spend three weeks rendering a single frame for a still to make it look so amazing. Now imagine trying to do that for a feature length film. Most of those movies have tens of thousands or more frames in them. 3 weeks for each one isn't a feasible process if they want to get it to their audiences in any reasonable amount of time.
And as to the parts that are animated and then mapped into a cityscape, the cityscape is a video recording and the mapping process is something that Hollywood does regularly in films. That process they do so well that the reason you think never happens is because you can't tell that it was mapped in.
Thats not to put down his work. He does absolutely amazing work and is definately right up there with the major players in what he can produce. - dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Whilst I am certainly impressed with the skills on show, I am gonna have to digg this story down. It's a shame really, because if the desc had simply said "Amazing CGI Skills" I would have dugg this story, however because it has sensationalist crap like "better than Hollywood" in it I am digging down, because quite simply it is nowhere near Hollywood quality, not even close.
- stuscuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great show reel, nice music, and fantastic endeavor by an individual. A great example of the democratisation of post-production tools. I hope he can create something truly original outside of the Hollywood system
- apoc519, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1something else to look at with nice FX work, www.pauljewell.com
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3mirror anyone? duggmirror doesn't work.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Drahkar
Although it may seem like it takes a long time to render a single frame when you look at just the time per frame, but you have to remember that the movie studios have very many computers all rendering different frames, and sometimes have clusters rendering one frame. For the movie cars, the average render time per frame was 24 hours, with the lowest being 10 hours. Imagine if they used one computer to render the whole movie. 116 minutes is 6960 seconds, at 24 fps, that is 167040 frames. If each frame took 10 hours, it would take one computer about 190 years to render the whole movie. Clearly it did not take that long.
- briankeith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It's incredible what a person can do with proper motivation and drive. I wish I had either.
- psygnisfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18You guys should hang around 3D forums more. The CGTalk people do much better stuff. cgtalk.com
- IpHa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3He does an excellent job at composting, but his completely 3d scenes aren't too convincing.
- razordancer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8What does composting have to do with rendering?
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"What does composting have to do with rendering?"
A lot - flaire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11he was referring to composting (garbage to fertilizer)
the correct word is compositing. - miker71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5composting and rendering .... hmmmm
Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other once-living materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is excellent for adding to houseplants or enriching garden soil.
Rendering plants perform one of the most complementing functions for modern slaughterhouses. They recycle dead animals, slaughterhouse wastes, and supermarket rejects into various products known as recycled meat, bone meal, and animal fat. - TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2my grandpa does a great job at composting, too. he yields decent sized crops of vegetables every year most of which he gives away to family members and anyone who wants free veggies.
- IpHa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My bad, I must have missed the spelling error.
- razordancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's all good, for all we know the artist is also excellent at composting.
I have to agree that those composites looked very nice!
- nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13He's average. I've seen Hollywood animations better and worse than his skills, but to try and sell this guy as better than Hollywood is utter garbage.
- quietbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or compost-as stated
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Why can't Hollywood match this guy's abilities and quality?"
Because its his passion, he can take his time, there is no consequence of failure and he loves doing it.- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Would have to disagree with half those points. I'm quite sure a lot of people working in this very specialized field is because they have a passion for it which translates to "loves doing it". But then remove the time factor and get it replaced with.. paid to do something they love.. it pretty much evens out.
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They love doing it, and then get stuck rendering a dancing penguin.
That's like loving to draw real art, and be stuck drawing caricatures of tourists in a park for the rest of your life.
- Torx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what song is that playing?
- chicaneuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The artist is the very talented Bonobo and the song is called Recurring :)
Hope that helps. - ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How can that not help? You just gave every bit of information requested. :-P
- chicaneuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The artist is the very talented Bonobo and the song is called Recurring :)

- blizt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Sorry, a mirror of Incredible CGI Special FX is not available. Available through http://pixellex.com.nyud.net:8080/main/index.html though..
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Did you even check this link? It doesn't work, it didn't catch it in time to cache.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@dDuk: To KingBelly's defence, the only way you can find out is by typing the link submitting and then testing it.. unless of course you went to duggmirror directly to check it out but as we most diggers are, we're lazy and quick to criticize.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Original link is working fine for me atm
- KingBelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ dDuk
No, but it offers alternatives on the page and I thought it would be useful.
- archerx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you guys are interested in hollywood CG artist check out http://www.cgcast.com , quite a few artist have been interviewed, one that worked on sincity, the aviator and even an animator that works at pixar, plus lots of other good stuff :)
- ArmedJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He's very good. Very impressive.
It's just a shame the submitter went so overboard with his comments, no where near as good as hollywood (which is fair enough).- inobla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd say his mechanized spider is at least at par a majority of the Hollywood CGI movies I've seen. Even better than a lot of them. The cartoon animation, not so much...
- xixor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4.. Because, you know what... It turns that that how you present the subject is whats important, not how it looks. I think that the 1080-i, HD-DVD or Blue-Ray obsessed industry and/or consumer is forgetting the big picture with what makes movies grand. If an image presented on a camera phone LCD or on YouTube at low resolution evokes an emotional response, it is solely because of the content: If it sucks at hyper-uber-reality resolutions, it's bound to suck at low resolutions.
- roberthead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Why can't Hollywood match this guy's abilities and quality?"
That's a great student portfolio, but, uh... Seen any movies lately?- badgerz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am absolutely picking up what you are putting down, brother.
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not bad, but nothing I haven't seen before. A lot of it seemed to be pre-viz quality. Would've blown me away 20 years ago, but today it just blends in with all the other stuff out there. CGI is a very mature industry with some very mature workflows and tools, that is reflected in the fact that you can do this stuff on a home computer today.
- teetow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE allow us to modify the story header and description. I'm so sick of having to read through yet another "LOL PIX AMAGAD!!!!" description of what is really a nice page. Good diggs shouldn't have to suffer because the poster is a moron.
- Mischa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13At the film school I work at this guy Ori did the best student piece I ever seen. They spend like half a year doing a single piece. It was on the front page of youtube for a bit. Mind boggling motion tracking. I love this noise.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hbbfJClypYg- super8mtb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw that piece a while back. I could see how it would take him so long. I'm sure it was worth it for a reel tho.
- roc4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This really should not be a front page story, as others have said as good as this guy is, it's just not newsworthy as many are as good and better, and comparing this to what Hollywood puts out just stinks of agenda. I guess the submitter has a friend he wanted to give free publicity to.
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess this sort of thing loses its magic when you do it for a living and know how all of the tricks are pulled off. It's sort of depressing thinking of it in those terms. Either way, his techniques are neither original or all that spectacular. The various compositing techniques he employs are pretty standard fare for any animator. They're pretty much required reading for anyone who wants to get into film.
- super8mtb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fairly basic motion tracking and comping. His texturing is weak too. Good work but nothing astounding. dugg down for sensationalism in title.
- 3dprototype, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1CSSCHNEIDER needs to get out more often!
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There really wasn't anything mindblowing in that video. Definitely not anything Hollywood needs to worry about.
- xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess his host didn't like all that traffic coming through. Account suspended.

- MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wow, the guy who wrote this title needs to get his head out of his ass. maybe you never saw real impressive work by individuals. i just saw that work and it's average student quality. there's tons & tons better than that. and nowhere near hollywood level.
- MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i really assume it was that multimedia designer himself who submitted this to get more exposure for his little studio.
this is just a multimedia portofolio with average design & poorly rendered cgi interior stuff.
move on. - Shalabi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What does the I in CGI stand for?
- wiggimt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Imagery.
Computer-generated imagery - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Actually the I in CGI stands for Interface as in Common Gateway Interface. The ancronym was associated to Common Gateway Interface long before it was (erroneously) appended to CG (Computer Generated). Some marketting twits probably thought CGI sounded better and used it for what should be CG.
- greenbriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Actually the "I" stands for "It" as in "Christ, Google It"
- Caleb83, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I suggest zwilliams reads an article on Common Gateway Interface. Also, it's hilarious, this site got canned, because of digg.
- flameboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ zwilliams
Hey, did you know that acronyms can have more than one meaning? - greenbriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@zwilliams:
"Actually the I in CGI stands for Interface as in Common Gateway Interface. The ancronym was associated to Common Gateway Interface long before it was (erroneously) appended to CG (Computer Generated). Some marketting twits probably thought CGI sounded better and used it for what should be CG."
Just to be pedantic, CG, in this context, stands for Computer Graphics, not Computer Generated. In another context, say, aeronautics, it could stand for Center of Gravity. Hey, look at that, acronyms CAN have more than one meaning! ;-) - sark666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@zwilliams: acronyms can have multiple meanings regardless of what came first, even in the same area. Look at video games
fps first person shooter
fps frames per second
- wiggimt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Imagery.
- masterofNone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1portfolio spam.
- karnautrahl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Deadlink sadly :(. Must have been the popularity!
- spacemanspork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't say whether or not the guy's stuff is really that good, but color me skeptical already since the poster is trying to make it sound like this ONE amateur is better than all the seasoned professionals... I'm tempted to digg it down for that reason already.
It's like having a clip of some guy who's good at basketball but definitely an amateur and going "Man, why aren't there any NBA players this good?" - epicrender, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Incredible CGI Special Effects"
I vote this the dumbest dugg headline of the month. His work is OK but does not compete with CGI in movies. I have worked on many movies doing CGI. Trust me that when you go see a movie the best effects are the ones that you don't realize are even fake. If you notice it as an effect then it is probably done poorly or done that way on purpose. The talent in the industry is nothing short of amazing. - ishmal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone should do a survey of all of the ISP's whose sites fail or have weak quotas exposed by the "Digg Effect". Maybe it would be incentive for them to upgrade their services. An "ISP Black List" would be fair justice.
- jb978, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so there's no mirror to this story?
- novaworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pretty cool - I expect Pixar will be knocking on his door.
Although I don't know jack ***** about that type of stuff - for all I know there is some $99 software that does all that kind of stuff.
When it comes to graphics anything post 1983 still impresses me. - mgadalsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice indeed. But my mom told me such things don't worth my attention.
