Takes one to know one. - rwallen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I noticed this too. With some images I tried it didn't seem like it did this but with this one that has text in it it's very obvious.

And if this hits the front page, it will be 100x that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17it would be cool if any of the tiny pictures were mine or had anything to do with me ...or the big picture.
- apg88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I believe the GIMP can do this for you.
- Conquerist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Mazaika let's you use a custom collection of images and doesn't "cheat" by overlaying the original image. In addition to considering color, it considers the shapes present in the individual tiles. Get it at http://mazaika.tripod.com/
- inio, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Eh, it cheats - transparently overlays the original image. It also doesn't appear to consider any sub-tile details, just looks at the average color over the whole tile.
- deannnnnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You can do this with your own collection. There are several programs out there, but my favorite is AndreaMosaic
http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
It's pretty easy to use. I would just recommend that you don't have it repeat tiles. - nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I didn't see any overlays. I viewed one of the full images and looked legit.
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7hi i'm herrshuster i like circles with lines through them
- Spampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+625 for me, seems broken.
- rwallen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I've always wanted to be able to do this with a collection of my own images, this is still neat pretty neat though.
- Merrick178, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Digg: 1 Yahoo: 0
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe it adds the uploaded images to the database that it generates the mosaic from. Then again would you really bother to find your minuscule contribution?
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like the idea, but it lends itself to abuse.
Imagine me disliking one of your comments, then convincing all my friends to 'thumbs down' all of your comments on sight.
Kind of the opposite of 'gaming' stories to the front page. - hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6DuggMirror: http://duggmirror.com/design/Image_Mosaic_Generator_3
- ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here a nice program for the Mac:

sorry about the caps, but that's how it's spelled and I'm not retyping it. - harvinator24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4except digg crashed a the page owned by yahoo.
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Google AndreaMosaic.

- matt646, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Trying going to http://click42.com/ worked for me...
Also it says "There have been 26 images uploaded and converted to photo mosaic images since September 2006." - akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"There have been 192 images uploaded and converted to photo mosaic images since September 2006."
odd. - autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For Mac users, awsome app to do the same. Uses your pic folders, iPhoto library, Google Images or Flickr or all at once for matching:
http://homepage.mac.com/knarf/MacOSaiX/
Use beta for universal. Oh, and it's free. - BowieX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Okay, while we wait for the page to go back up, I have a question (not really sure where else to ask):
Has the idea been brought up before, where every digger's "average digg rating" appears next to all his/her comments, and dynamically updates itself whenever said average changes? Would it not be a good way of telling who are good commentators worth reading, who are average, and who are losers who make bad jokes or spam?
You may have the option of automatically burying poor commentators, but having the rating stated next to your name may encourage good comments...? - riccohasdug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The mighty hammer of Digg smites yet another lowly server :(
Oh well...I'll go play with some of the apps everyone suggested earlier (never even tried it with The GIMP). Thanks! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I had this string
There have been 135 images uploaded and converted to photo mosaic images since September 2006 - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you only do color matching it is actually really easy. I wrote an app that first scanned your entire picture library (the bigger the better) and found the "average" color in each picture. You then feed it an image to mosiac and set the size of the boxes to turn to an image. So you could say something like, take this 1000x1000 image and convert each 10x10 portion to an image from my library that is sizes 100x100. So you would end up with an image that is much larger than the source 1000x1000 obviously. It would simply look at the average color in that 10x10 box and pick the closest image it could find in your library (it also factored in image usage amount, so it wouldn't use the same image a lot if it could find another that was close).
That is the basics of it, it is shape detection that is hard. I never had my app doing that. - dcmusicfusion, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1I uploaded my picture---but I couldn't get it to work....
- tempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made a photo mosaic of the new Spiderman 3 poster:
http://helpliquidcom.awardspace.com/ - woodcoxcb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1make it like pagerank! the higher the average rating, the more influential that person's comment diggs!
- dionhewson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow rip off of www.blogsaic.com
- Dankoozy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks just like a Progressive encoded JPEG that hasn't finished loading
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's what the digg up/down button beside each comment is for.
If someone has a perfect rating, they can still encourage bad comments - It's called different opinions. And sometimes an individual with a crappy rating could have a great comment that encourages more good comments.
I've never had problems with comments being dugg up or down. Some people like them, some don't.
What their rating would be, in such a system, I couldn't care less. I'm interested in what they say, not some number.
Besides, do we yet need another level of complexity?
The old saying... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" comes to mind. - riccohasdug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The mirror that vandallotsofnumbers posted is working fine here, guys.
"There have been 1 images uploaded and converted to photo mosaic images since September 2006."
Uhmmm, O.K. - BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool, I'm thinking about taking some good ole' vacation photos, Mosaic'ing them... then putting them up one the wall in nice frames. Now that would be cool, especially even a huge digg logo. *dugg
Heres a firefox logo that I had it render:

"There have been 18 images uploaded and converted to photo mosaic images since September 2006. The image mosaic generator was created by pre, a member of Adelaider.com" - Cynderella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like how it used white images for my skin, although I completely understand; I could use computer paper as cover-up.
Though I'm not quite sure why the rainbow umbrella was used for my hair at least five times. - moghua, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For Linux users, I recommend Metapixel:

- bcreavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about Mosaickr: A Flickr-powered one where you can use your own photos for the images that compose the mosaic.
http://mosaickr.com/ - scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THIS DOESN'T WORK! Just returns a "Done" loading page that is completely blank!
- Surfer51, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I paid $39.00 for this program! Gee...
- xcursedx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is great for porn pics !
