If I Could Redesign Myspace...
deviantart.com — If it were up to me, this is how I would do it. I know it's becoming a clich é style, but I'm sure it's better than what they have now. This is more of a "asking for improvement comment" post, so if you have any suggestions, please tell! Thanks.

- vonelab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Cliche for sure... but sometimes cliche ain't to shabby. I like it, definately cleaner- as should be... but then again I hate myspace so don't try improving it, let it kill itself.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20If anyone cares, he also made a Slashdot redesign
http://www.deviantart.com/view/32692966/ - Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I agree, myspace should kill itself, and the best improvement they could make would be this:
Make a new section that says "people i hate" and add Tom automatically as soon as you sign up. Yay! - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Mike Davidson pretty much kicked ass at redesigning myspace, even with their stupid rules: http://myspace.com/mikeindustries
- rhizome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But what happens when the Ajax "Web 2.0" look isn't cool anymore? Should their appearance be as trendy as their userbase? If they just follow what is cool, they're destined to be not much more than Target/Kmart, identity-wise. Which is maybe a more honest reflection, but still.
- ibjhb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5take a look at: http://www.myspace.com/haleyluna
she has a pretty cool design too - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahaha
From mike's page
"You can't really call this a MySpace page Mike! You don't have an AOLesque sparkly pastel background with clashing neon text! Even worse, nobody is allowed to adorn your comment box with gigantic HTML teddy bears that take a lifetime to load. Tsk, tsk. What are you thinking?"
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20If anyone cares, he also made a Slashdot redesign
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81I would redesign it to be so inaccessible and ugly that nobody could bear to use it. Oh. Wait a minute.
- phileplanet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24That is a sick layout. You'd think that with 81 Million users they would have the money to hire some designers.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone know if tom designed myspace?
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Not me, that bastard isn't MY friend....
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ahh, idc if it looks nice, just make the god damn thing load quicker. There are SOO many ads on it, when I installed adblock, it cut the load time in half, but it is STILL slow.
- carrmatt, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3If I could redesign MyRectum I'd be crapping bricks.
- carrmatt, on 10/12/2007, -34/+4At least it's not as gay as your current page:
http://www.myspace.com/timoteo7- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32except for the fact that that's not me.
http://www.myspace.com/timshundo - carrmatt, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Under 17 minutes! Your good!
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10defectds, one of the nicer myspace layouts in my opinion.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I don't use myspace, but that's definitely the nicest page I've seen. Props.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4thanks :)
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I digg your myspace for the sole facts that it's clean and doesn't feature music or video. Dugg.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32except for the fact that that's not me.
- alexisthemovie, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2theres a bit of everything in there, the usual web 2.0 trends and the login part looks a lot like box.net
http://www.freshprofiles.com - nutshell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Looks good from a design perspective, but you ignored the most important challenge that ever designer faces in the real world, incorporating advertisements tastefully.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "myspace specials" thing is an advert.. Not the usual banner ad though..
Still, it'd be a huge inprovement over the myspace main-page, but that isn't really the problem, it's the millions of profile pages that look terrible (mostly).. Care to redesign all of them?
- Ben
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "myspace specials" thing is an advert.. Not the usual banner ad though..
- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This couldn't work with MySpace, really. The site actually faces a huge challenge for the future because improving the layout could upset their huge base of users. With the customization of the standard profile layout, you have to be approximate with the current CSS and not make anything drastic happen. Your design would be great for the front page of MySpace but as nutshell mentioned, there is no way tastefully have advertisements if that header were to stay at the top of all pages.
/rambling. Stylish photoshop work, at least; very modern.- CaptainWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2oopsies lolol plz2downmod
- CaptainWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49Uhh, regardless of how good that looks, it wouldn't work. 90% of the MySpace users don't know what looks good. Most of them would be mad because it doesn't have pink borders, a black background with falling stars, a crosshair cursor, and a My Chemical Romance song playing in the background.
- pepsiRocket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Couldn't have said it better myself.
- Shugshoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's exactly what I'd say. The redesign is somewhat slick, but not what most users want. The success of My Space is because it's user defined, as bad as that may be in the end. Offering more slick, branded pages I feel would only turn off most of the users who want their page to be the best part of the site (in their opinion).
- Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow! If only I could rate your comment more than once.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly.
MySpace = GeoCities recycled
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does remind me of some of the popular layouts out there (Wordpress, for example).
Looks good, I must say. It's organized and clean-cut.
But if that similar layout is used on a typical profile page, the users will easily ***** it up with their "1337 HTML skillz". Oh well. - fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10couldnt you make it a greeese monkey script? that would look pretty cool
- tonyhartfield, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2that'd be awesome
- electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6YAY now it doesnt look like *****
- attila, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is pretty nice... definitely better than the current layout.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks to me like Wordpress ;)
- justinvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16MySpace makes me hate humans. Not that I'm not human, but man, some people are stupid.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15So I was having a conversation with a friend:
ilyanep: so i pretty much think that if they hired about 20 competent software programmers, shut down the site for about a week or two, installed about 10 more servers, and redesigned the whole site from scratch they'd have a good thing going
Rebecca: i think you just named the apocalypse and the impossible at the same time
Rebecca: 20 COMPETENT programmers?
Rebecca: 1-2 WEEKS?
Rebecca: i think all of humanity might come to an end - LoHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really like what you did to your personal profile as well. I have a myspace and I've never seen anything look remotely like yours.
- hookid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this is really slick, nice job! It looks great.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8MySpace should type 'kill' in console..
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Or even better "bind mouse1 kill"
- kleger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hold alt + F4 for unlimited ammo!
- gadgetsguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here is an interesting comment on myspace I found yesterday ...
"The bottom line is nothing is free, otherwise no one would do it for a living! If a company was truly giving stuff away for free they would provide a clean link for you to download it without any of them questionnaires or asking you for your name, address, phone number or wanting to track your computer usage or online search habits.
A prime example is MySpace, it%u2019s a free services with some ads at the header of the site. As a webmaster I know them ads convert at less then 5% CTR and the payout per click is almost laughable.
How MySpace makes it%u2019s money is by tracking what your doing on their site. Thus they sell not only your information, but also what are you interested in, to larger companies that want to keep track of trends, and growing markets.
In the end if the company is not making money out the front door, you better go check to see what are they selling out the back, because I can bet it%u2019s probably your ass!"
http://boogybonbon.com/2006/05/24/how-free-content-business-model-works-2/ - aleahey, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I would redesign it to look exactly like http://www.myssssssspace.com/ does
- Keloran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9pretty much something a drunk draws on a toilet wall is a better design than the current myspace site
- adammud, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Actually to anyone that has a life outside of computer, myspace is a great tool to keep up with friends. Also, the design of the site is fine, why would I want to wait ever longer for the pages to load. Most of the site is text other than advertisements.
Everyone grow up, its just one website.... - Darwinian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2yeah, maybe people who aren't emo would use *****, sorry, myspace if it wasn't so bad looking.
Top design. - Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9If I were redesigning MySpace, this is what it would look like.
http://tinyurl.com/9y8m8 - ers35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One problem, I don't see any room for the advertisements that take up half the header...
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cliche or not, rounded corners and gradients always look nice, and always will. Products other than websites have used them for decades and if it looks nice, is easy to understand, and works well, it's still a winner.
- smee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if you're going for web 2.0 you've got it. How would the tabs on the right (events videos music) drop down though? they might run over the member sign in. There is also too much information and it's quite overwhelming but that is a myspace issue and overall you've done a very good job with the visual heirarchy.
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If there were to be a effect redesign of MySpace, for everyones sake it should be done from very close to the ground up. As it is the site feels like it's held together with glue and Popsicle sticks. I don't even use myself but when visiting profiles of a few old friends of mine the whole thing gives off the vibe of shoddy high school student project.
If they were really serious about it, putting in a lot of hard work and effort to facilitate the move to a more streamlined database setup, then working their way up to how the profiles are rendered and connected, the flexibility of the redesign would no doubt allow such clean front page designs such as this, while at the same time allowing the users to more easily incorporate content and theming of their own profiles without it turning into a kludgey mess.
MySpace. Great idea, great marketing potential, poorly implemented and a victim of its own associated user base. - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hey, I've got a got redesign for MySpace! http://facebook.com Free of spamming idiots, emo fools, and ugly profiles!
- jtablerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2ahhh, but we're not all still in college - @*.edu required...
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Facebook is NOT .edu only. Anyone who goes to high school and is in at least 8th grade can get a facebook, if someone from their school invites them.
- skez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2too bad we're not all in high school either dumbass
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would kill it, not redesign it.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3he added curves to it.. that it
- dandyhighwayman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The problem is not the homepage layout. It is the fact that 70 million + users get to layout their own pages on that site.
This should put an end to that quick:
http://marilyncarolyn.blogspot.com/2006/05/myspace-wants-yourcash.html - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is spam. It's the second or third time in a couple of hours this guy has submitted a link to his own site.
- feelingfunky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, I am glad I read this before I posted a link to my blog where I discuss the problems technically and socially with Myspace. So instead of a link that might be considered spam, here it is in a nutshell. Tech Support Sucks - I mean really sucks, still waiting (for 3 weeks) to get account killed; they didn't read any emails I sent them, and responded to me with someone elses question; Too many kiddies making sites that take 2-3 min to load; auto starting sound it just plain stupid; the date didn't understand Canada YMD so it kept saying I was a capricorn when I wasn't.
Here is something to try though; Setup a myspace account but use Gmail's "+label" (example, myemail+myspace@gmail.com) as the account email. Their software drops the "+" and the email is now invalid, but the account works. You need to add the +label to login but won't ever recieve email or be able to cancel your account etc. Stupid software.

- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3bloody brilliant!
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You also should block all the mods those people do with nonstop moving things, transparency, sound and movies, gif moving everywhere, super neon green text on white, full images backgrounds, more moving. Some mySpaces crash browsers, i mean Woa.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could not agree with you more.
Some of the pages are a pretty disgusting mish mash.
And who wants to listen to their poor music choices while looking at their page?
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could not agree with you more.
- progeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see people talking about money issues. MySpace is owned by Intermix Media, Intermix is controlled by News Corp (NWS).
Obviously, with that kind of backing, something else is going on. I can't stand MySpace, but I'm just going to sit back and wait, and see what happens. I don't think anybody can predict what the monster, that MySpace has become, will do next. - sillvicky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0brilliant so much cleaner and up to date than the current ***** layout
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only thing that really bothers me on myspace is all the ***** people put on it, and the ***** comments. Jesus, how bout limiting the comments to 5 a page or something? Takes forever to load!
- spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I love it. It's got that new "rendered in IE 7" look to it. I can't put my finger on it.
It's more than just being rounded, everything looks cleaner. I like it a lot.
What do you call this "look"?
As far as the myspace criticisms, who cares?? It's Myspace.
I digg the look!!
http://www.myspace.com/spinchange- uzusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I love it. It's got that new "rendered in IE 7" look to it. I can't put my finger on it.

What do you call this "look"?"
i would call that the Web 2.0 look. - Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If that's your myspace layout, you should be ashamed.
- uzusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I love it. It's got that new "rendered in IE 7" look to it. I can't put my finger on it.
- Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice to see the band Ignite gracing the front page of Myspace there...
- Cine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pretty good. I love what you did to your myspace profile, too. If only everyone's looked as pretty.
- turbodigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0dude thats freakin awsome, very good u should make some kind of deal with the myspace people, u could make some $ with that
- Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah but there is a huge difference between a Photoshop mock-up and actuall coding it. As someone said earlier, the way the tabs drop down would be hard to reproduce.
- ylikone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Myspace has one of the crappiest sites for a very popular one. It is not very user friendly and is usually very slow. Hell, it's cold fusion! WTF? Anyway, somebody tried to copy myspace fame using PHP here ... http://sitespaces.net
- Adorism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Should Digg really be a platform for designers to show off their latest layout? No offense, but I come here for news not portfolio critiques. For that sort of thing, someone should go to a design forum and ask there. This is disguised self-promotion.. why couldn't I just post a link to my personal portfolio, if this sort of thing is allowed?
Am I wrong?
But, it IS a wonderful design. I think it would be great if it were actually used.- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Should Digg really be a platform for designers to show off their latest layout?"
That is something that would ultimately decided by digg users - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg has a design category. Deal with it.
- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Should Digg really be a platform for designers to show off their latest layout?"
- PunchMeIBleed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1***** myspace
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Noooo .... deviantart has died....
- philipkd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2While this is a beautiful design, it wouldn't work. The feel is too clean and slick. With myspace, you don't mind installing cazy customized CSS because the design is so neutral anyways. This is why I don't think MTV could ever make a proper competitor to myspace. They'd hire all the top designers who would either use their design background to make it look like a static brochure, or use their Web 2.0 background to make it look like a Gmail app.
I read somewhere this money quote about "design ugly," and it posed the question, "would you rather go to a sort of run-down dive bar where all the cool people hung out, or some nice slick club that only attracted a bunch of a-holes." - Cinder6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Here's my redesign: http://img192.imageshack.us/my.php?image=myspacenew2go.gif
A little rough, I know, but you get the picture.- Cinder6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It *would* be simpler that way.
- Pixellore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This looks very much like a website we are putting together.
