- albyliontk, on 10/16/2008, -1/+13This is a useful tutorial..... I was not aware of this web site too, good to know is there for check for articles and other tutorials
- thegamingguy, on 10/16/2008, -3/+12insane skills in that tut.
- milkmit, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8I suppose it's not critical for icons of this size, but for anything under ~32x32 pixels, another tip they don't mention:
Turn on Pixel Preview (View > Pixel Preview). This will let you see *exactly* what your design will look like on the pixel level (even zoomed all the way in) while still retaining editing on the vector-level, so you can make something pixel-perfect and not worry about corners and edges not snapping to the pixel, and as a result, blurring with antialiasing when you export (which can really make it hard to create something "legible" when you're dealing with so few pixels). - lowtolerance, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5what?
- hyphen8, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4Certain steps of the tutorial could have been a bit more elaborated, as the jump between step 5 and step 6 is pretty big and shows a lot of detail which is not covered. A further tutorial on how to create the 'box' would be beneficial. All-in-all, an okay tut, 21/2 out of 5
- Nouman6, on 10/17/2008, -1/+4Awesome professional tutorial!
I really needed some help in the 3D area. - unfinite, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3It's not really tech, it's design.
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3I hate to break up the pre-press tea party, but this is an icon design tutorial. Icons aren't assets that go to print.
- SteelFrog, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2...that tutorial was pretty bad. He skips major steps and simply says "make something good, then put it in a box".
- thedinomeister, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3The perspective is off, and the ellipses need a little bit of work. When drawing an ellipse in perspective, the minor axis must always be parallel to the vanishing point. In addition, to find the correct degree of the ellipse, create a square around it and check to see if the ellipse touches all four mid-points of the square in perspective. Lastly, don't forget that the degree changes as you go further back.
Sorry, as Industrial Designers we are trained to pick out details like the one's mentioned. Good icons though! - lowtolerance, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2glad i wasn't the only to notice the perspective was off...weird considering they used a built-in effect, but they really screwed up the facing edge somehow, after the fact.
interesting tips on drawing ellipses in perspective, by the way. - lowtolerance, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3have you even used illustrator?
jpegs are horrible for design work, especially vector graphics. - spiffywilco, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Anyone else find it ironic that they have a tutorial on icon design, yet don't have a URL icon? I didn't notice till I bookmarked it, but still..
Okay, probably alone on the "I give a ***** factor." - CrushThemTorg, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1I see your point. I assume it's a truism among graphic designers that clients are generally complete morons?
Or, at the very least, that a designer responsible enough to be worrying about how the transparency will degrade would also would also inform the client that this sort of thing won't play with a spot color or black and white run. - mikedoth, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2It's great if all your doing is using it for web or in house printing, but try to send it out and you'll have to go with four color press prices.
- WhoDoneIt, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2You are correct and wrong at the same time. While this is an "icon", you just wait until your client loves it so much they want to place it into a 2 colour brochure and you need to inform them that in order to do so it's going to cost twice as much for that one little icon. Either that or we just make it a duotone which I'm sure they'll love to death.
- zip000, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Yes, I haven't used Illustrator much, and at step 5 I'm pretty well lost.
I'm guessing this is a tutorial meant for people with more experience than me!
Oh well. I'll go out and find more basic tutorials and come back to it. - theadvinci, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1Wow... not bad.
- JackpotCity, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2Very nicely laid out tutorial this, kudos.
Icon design is a vital skill for any designer, it's a great to be able to redesign default icons, both for desktop and website usage. A good icon set can really make a website pop. - Gumby_Mac, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Agreed. He left out quite a few steps. Simply doing the 3D Bevel and Extrude (even using the exact same settings) will NOT give you the same three-dimensional cube with all the gradient shading (at least not in the copy of CS3 Illustrator I have). You also have to apply an "Object > Expand Appearance" before adding additional effects. Maybe it's implied but not everyone understands all the ins and outs of Illustrator.
- Swerengen, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1bookmarked for later - keep the illustrator tuts coming boys and girls!
- BashiBazouk, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1Not to mention with all the advanced transparency blending modes it won't survive many RIP's.
- Kameroon, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0Bravo. Very nice tutorial.
- amitait, on 10/17/2008, -3/+2How to draw a new icon in Illustrator.
Step 1: Draw the icon.
Step 2: Put it in Illustrator.
Step 3: Export as JPG. - PereGoriot1, on 01/14/2009, -1/+0Very nice tutorial. In my opinion, everyone ought to have their icon, especially Polish girls: http://www.sexypolishgirls.com
- stutimandal, on 10/17/2008, -2/+1A tech article on Digg! Must be a dream. Wake me up.
On a serious note: The tutorial is advanced and great. Thank you. - noumuon, on 10/17/2008, -3/+1.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -4/+1Is rendered the same thing as ripping
