- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -13/+98I don't think this deserves much empathy.
I'm not upset that he got nothing out of it. I doubt he went out of his way to help Apple sell computers, so why should he get something special?
At the time all he was doing was his job.
He was a designer and his job was to make logos, so he did.
I'm sure he got paid for it, and the next day he made a logo for some other company and the day after he made another one. Just because one of those companies succeeded and became huge, does he deserve special attention?
Anyway, that's just my opinion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+96wow, if smeagol was a hick on crack he would be just like you
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31He was paid for his work by his employer, who was the actual person that donated the logo. It's called a work for hire.
- Vixenbergen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25More interesting on that site is the person who invented the cell phone and got nothing out of it.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30Who invented that one with the capital M followed by a dollar sign (M$)? I see that all the time. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Dr. Douglas Engelbart, 80, the inventor of the computer mouse, loathes Steve Jobs. "I'm just so angry with the single button," he says about Apple's early commercialization of the device back in the '80s. "Why would they make it with just one button? More buttons give you more control."
Apple. lol. Interact. - shooby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20ironic that the logo is NOW a monochromatic gray logo
where'd the color go Mr. Jobs? - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -12/+27taters? whats taters, precious?
- dsander, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I didn't get out of the article that he was whining at all. He was just talking about the history of it's evolution. the writer added the part about not getting anything out of it.
Also, a logo doesn't have to be something complex to be ingenious. It's usually those that are the simplest that work best. A logo does though take on it's own life due to the companys success. - hollimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11it doesnt sound like he's all that bitter about it. he designed the logo and sold it to them. thats the life of a graphic designer. my aunt designed the Northwestern University logo (the purple "N" with a wildcat busting out of it), sold it to them and that was that. now its all over the place and she doesnt see any extra money. say lah vee.
- rickpable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10He replaced it with colorful computers, and then colorful iPods. I admit, it's not there anymore...but hey, with all these rumors of colorful MacBooks, who knows?
- Jestermask, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Mr. Jobs decided that Apple had done enough "humanizing" of the PC, and decided to make it so far out of reach for the common man cost-wise that he took all the color away.
- stev3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Why do you call me an ***** for introducing other people to the man who created the Apple logo? I never said he should be rich. By got nothing out of it, I really meant he's not that famous, honestly, had you ever heard of him?
- danr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Things like this come up all the time. The person that designed the Nike logo did it for $25 or something of that nature (she later received some free stock options after the company become huge though, I believe.)
It is a graphic designers job to design a logo.... the logo might contribute to the success of the company, but that is what they are being paid for in the first place, to act like they aren't getting their fair share if the company later becomes huge isn't logical. You can be sure that people who are paid to re brand or redesign the logo of an already large business are paid very nicely. - Jestermask, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You fought the bull and sometimes the bull won and sometimes you won...and it was good, and there was wine, and people danced, and people laughed!
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Finder logo != Happy Mac.
Happy Mac was the Macintosh computer with the smile on it, that used to show at boot time instead of the grey apple thats there now. If your computer was broken, you would get a "sad mac" - GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22He made Apple Computer's logo an Apple. How... inventive.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8c'est la vie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ahh i remeber thoose days that was the real apple, i liked the bomb thing when you had a critical error
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This guy was doing his job AND getting paid to do it... He didn't even work for Apple, he was working for a contractor that Apple happened to use. If he hadn't come up with the logo, someone else would have.
Now, we are supposed to feel sorry for the guy because Apple Inc. became a success and he didn't get a piece of the pie?
This guy should just be happy that he has bragging rights about coming up with the original design and quit whining about not getting holiday cards. - CryingWolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed, I have created a few Logo's in my spare time. If one of them became a icon like the apple logo I wouldn't expect anything else from it. I wouldn't expect my customer to give me anymore then what I asked originally for it and I wouldn't expect fame or fortune from it. I wouldn't expect people on the street to stop me and ask, "Did you design that logo?"
- IchiroBoston, on 10/12/2007, -23/+27Whine.... It was his job! No Digg
- saisumimen3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*LOL*
that would be funny if he walks around everywhere with that 80's apple t-shirt carrying that mac screaming " I INVENTED THE APPLE LOGO!!!!" at traffic. - aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't get why he should get credit for inventing a logo. He was working for a company, the head of the company was friends with Jobs, they told him to make a logo (which was his job), and he did it. End of story. All in all, he did his job. Nothing more, nothing less. Albeit, I guess he should have gotten some credit if it was the LOGO that made the company famous, but it wasn't. It was the product. I doubt ANYONE goes to a store and sees the logo, and their first reaction is, "Oh man, I REALLY want to spend about two grand on a new computer right now."
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Its actually not monochromatic. ... Yes, its one color"
mon-o-chro-mat-ic
adj.
Having or appearing to have only one color.
Of or composed of radiation of only one wavelength: monochromatic light.
Done in monochrome: monochromatic prints and paintings.
Of or exhibiting monochromatism. - Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know NOTHING about graphic design. It's a lot more then just drawing a simple apple.
- fortezza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3>ahh i remeber thoose days that was the real apple, i liked the bomb thing when you had a critical error
I just like bombs. - lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4well, lots of companies create famous logos and don't get much recognition out of it.......
and btw, this is getting out of hand.........it's become like a standard story.....
Meet the (insert gender) who (insert verb) the (insert object) and got nothing out of it.
it's like madlibs, except what you add in isn't all too important........... - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Try making grammar your thing. Please.
- eddieroger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Its actually not monochromatic. It has the very aqua theme to it with shadows and highlights. Yes, its one color, but it has shades of that color, too.
And I consider myself a "common man", yet I have a Mac. - gregkeene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First, you don't invent logos, you create them.
And, give me a break. He did his job and the company he worked for got paid by Apple -- heck it was Jobs that suggested the multi-color. This happens every day. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4A logo can make or break a company.
Thus is the life of a graphic designer... sometimes it's just an average job, other times it's a world-changing hit... You can't tell the future.
I think Mr. Jobs should send him a nice thank you cheque, though... I know I would. - KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Most of you are dorks, the guy isn't asking for anything, retards, it's just an article about the guy who created the Apple logo, it doesn't say he wants anything out of it. Last year I listened to an interview with this guy on Your Mac Life and at no time did he say he wanted anything from creating the logo.
And yes logos are an essential part of a company, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a lame uneducated dumbass. :)
Big DIGG because of all the idiots making stupid comments. Go on now, piss and moan some more about something you know nothing about. - dignon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So, this guy developed the Apple logo while working for a company contracted by Apple to create their logo. I assume he got paid by the company he was working for when he made the logo. Therefore, "he got nothing for it" is completely inaccurate. Lame.
- keslacr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here is another guy giving out his sob story for something that he was paid to do on a job. He should not be complaining about it because not only can he say he created it, but he was also paid by the company he worked for. Enough of the I did this so people please recognize me.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What probably not many people know is that the whole Apple trademark was inspired (*cough*stolen*cough*) by Apple corps. - founded by The Beatles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notable_litigation_of_Apple_Computer#Trademark_dispute_with_Apple_Corps - wesball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Got nothing out of it?
I'm sure he didn't do it for free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Come on Steve! We know you lurk in here. Do the right thing. Cough up a few bucks for this guy.
- misfit410, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So he came up with the idea of an apple with a bite taken from it for a company called Apple? brilliant!!!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"and also i heard he is a homosexula"
There you have it. Homosexula. Dracula's brother that doesn't get talked about much. - Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*kalisphoenix
Wow dude, I'm no stranger to reading the heavy lifting people who try to rationalize their own behavior, but I think you take this month's prize hands down. - GreenAlien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it may be the world's most famous logo, so he did something right.
To compare it, check out the logo for Apple Corps (the music company). Their logo is rubbish IMHO, and it's still an apple.
So yes, Apple Computers logo is simple, but the best ideas always are.
Nobody said the graphic designer should be rich over it. But nontheless it's interesting that the guy who created possibly the world's most famous logo got just a basic salary for it. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Suzan Kare: http://www.kare.com/MakePortfolioPage.cgi?page=2
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They give iPods to celebrities who give awards on shows that have nothing to do with Apple. They can give the dude who designed their logo a *****' iPod.
Also, FTFA: "In 1977, Rob Janoff was handed a lousy pro bono assignment"; pro bono means doing work for free, usually for the public good. So either the article is wrong, or he did not, in fact, get paid for it. - imagine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@kalisphoenix... GET A F***** LIFE! If you want to make yourself look educated and intelligent, start by stepping away from the keyboard. 90% of the people on this forum are comparable to 12 year old computer geeks who no *****, and who are not very bright. So why are you even bothering? You are just proving YOURSELF to be an imbecile.
- sonofa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eve should be suing Apple Corps, not Apple.
- maxtor2002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I Created the logo , who the hell are you !!
- ryansac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He created the logo, but the Beatles created the name.

>First, you don't invent logos, you create them.
No, mankind cannot create anything. He can discover, but not create. So, he took an already-known, existing shape and played around with it until he discovered a way of expressing it that he liked. Creating is where nothing existed and all of the something there is something new that did not exist before. - kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I might ask you the same question, o ye of little alony ;)
