- paleck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16There is both a controlled period and a fully autonomous period in each match.
- Evilstanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Robots are awesome - this is one constant that will always remain true.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hah, I used to do this in High School too! How exciting, the field has grown dramatically in size when compared to just a few years ago. Great to see the interest in Engineering and Sciences since it is primarily low-balled in the preliminary education system in this country.
- TJ09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow. This is on digg. For some reason, I never expected that.
And too bad my team (230) isn't going, but I will be glued to my laptop watching the webcast Friday+Saturday. - 1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Saigat
Both, there are autonomous periods in the competition game as well as radio controlled.
Sorry for the dupe answer, beat by a minute. By the way, for those who are interested, they've been doing autonomous periods for a while now, I did the coding for my team's about 3 years ago. - Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Is this a robot competition, or a remote-controlled machine competition? Because there is in fact a distinct difference between the two.
- krolls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am sorry your experience with FIRST turned you off. FIRST is an amazing program- when done right... but it can suck horribly if a team is not managed correctly.
When I was in High School my team (or well at least the students on the team) made it a priority to have the team made up of normal easy going kids. We could achive this by making communication and coperation a priority.... AKA the weird ass D&D Dungeon Master with no social skills would never make it past the first week because he simply could not communicate well enough with the other team members.
Students should always build the robot in my opinion... its better to have a student robot that does not do well than a engineer designed and built robot that wins every match. - TROGDOR42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd be nothing without FIRST. Except for the part where I would get better grades. FIRST took over my life.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Team 1114 Represent!!! Going all the way :P
- zachriggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4WOOT FOR TEAM 1940... That lost at our regionals... :'(.
- dulcimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FIRST is certainly a great opportunity for students, but I gotta say, those competitions have to be the biggest collection of socially awkward high school students on earth. It's the only place where you are revered for riding around in Segway, not called a tool.
- penguain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My team 1997 won the kansas city regional and we'll be there
- h3ndrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is where I was first exposed to 3d Studio Max
- miketwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This was definitely the coolest thing I got to do in high school, and I'm saying that now still in college as an Aerospace Engineer! Everyone should check it out (young and old alike) if you can, you won't be disappointed, this stuff is amazing!
- lordcalvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good job, my team, 1777 attended the KC regionals as well, we lost in the first round of the finals though... =(
is 1997 stag robotics? i remeber Stag and railer robotics won, and i can't remeber the other team sorry if it's you... - willzzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Team 503 (Frog Force) will be there in Atlanta after winning the GLR!
http://www.intiernovi503.com - conorryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm sorry you had an unfortunate time in the one year you participated. And yes, I had the same problem you had with FIRST with adults not letting the kids build it, but things changed, 1403 used to be one of the "engineered teams" where the engineers did all of the work and cut the students out, but the team changed that this year and the students built it. You don't know what FIRST is until you take a team through the process the way it was meant to be. FIRST does have a problem with certain teams where engineers do the work and the students aren't properly mentored. However, you can't argue that there is a better program at getting people exposed to Engineering.

*watches our wheel fall off*
"yup, Inventor's up to date" - compgeek275, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know the captain of 1403 and it was his and his team members' mission this year to make a change in the program. They ended up with an amazing robot built by students and in an alliance with us (75) at the Trenton Regional, and we're both going to be at nationals. I was fortunate to join a well-run team (although a bit late, being a senior already), have done a majority of the programming work for our robot, and have seen the same in almost every team I've met this year. If there's anyone else out there who feels that FIRST is an engineers' program, not a students', I hope you tune into the broadcast next weekend, or better yet, see it in person. Regionals take place around the country and are open to the public, nationals are in Atlanta, GA. Come cheer us on and get involved!
- Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Team 1230 Bronx New York, won 2005 regionals, rookie of the year, 2007 nyc team spirit award. Woohoo will be at atlanta, we qualify ;)

- eastbeast314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Autodesk deserves to be commended for that. My life would have been very different if we hadn't had access to 3ds in high school.
- IllicitAgency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was on team 1977 last year. was alot of fun and actually helped me get my ***** together....great program all high schools need it.
