- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Actual link to the image with proper script, just encase some missed it.
http://www.johnsadowski.com/big_spanish_castle.php# - asteron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24BURIED for BLOG SPAM. Why submit a link to a tiny blog entry with one link on it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yep just worked that out. I went to M4tt3r's link and HOLY ***** that is the coolest illusion i have ever seen.
- billblaskey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Did someone really just spam digg with a link to a Jennifer Lopez biography... wow. just wow.
- Noize, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11i liked the colors in the picture and i wanted to use them in a design so i hit print screen only to later realize that the picture on the clipboard was in gray scale :P thats my dumb blond moment for the week
- JerMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Lifehacker articles are regularly featured on the front page of Digg, and it's a good blog, but I have to agree as well. If you can link directly to the source, why not do it?
- veektor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I must be retarded too?
- raabco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7link to the real link you dumbass
-digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Actually, it works fine in both. FUDpackers...
- Sirey4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Hmm, theres a simpler solution: www.myopticalillusion.com
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The tutorial works great, by the way. My friend had a go at this just a few weeks ago and came up with this:
http://www.thefourthworld.com/TP1.htm - Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Reading comprehension level one.
Children, pick up your pencils. You may now begin the test. - dandonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4After the you looked at the image for 30 secs look at a blank wall and blink lots of times fast, the image of the castle will then be orange and the background blue.
The real illusion is cool too. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol, you guys.
i see some confusion about how this is supposed to work.
go here : http://www.johnsadowski.com/big_spanish_castle.php# (courtesy of m4tt3r)
make sure you aren't moused over the image. you will see a black dot. stare at the black dot for 20-30 seconds, then mouse over the image. the image will appear as if it's in color, when in fact, it's actually a black & white photo.
you win at the internet. - sik0fewl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Instructions I used for GIMP:
On the new layer:
Layer -> Duplicate layer
Layer -> Colors > Invert
On the bottom layer:
Layer -> Colors -> Desaturate
Create a new layer on top of the other layers:
Set "Mode" to "Value" (from "Normal")
Fill the layer with gray (#808080)
Layers -> Merge down
Create a new layer:
Draw dot in center of image
I'm not sure if the "Value" mode filter works quite as well as the Photoshop "Luminosity" filter. Does anyone know how to achieve this affect? - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you're missing the point of the demonstration. This demonstrates how the mind's eye interprets color information and can adapt each 'pixel' in the eye to a certain temperature. This 'burned in' color information remains in the eye even when the chroma channel is replaced with a luminosity channel.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yay for Minneapolis
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4now digg looks black and white.. d'oh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yes i am suuure that really happened :P
- buddydvd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2check out http://myopticalillusion.com
This one actually lets you upload your own image. - RJNavarrete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's pretty awesome. I didn't get it at first... Then I read the comment and actually stared at the inverted for a bit before mousing over... This is brilliant. Way to exploit the brain. Definite Digg...
- gandalfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool!
- probeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jrocknyc - for as often as I hear ***** come out of my mouth, your addition of the letter y still has me laughing 30 minutes later.
thank you. - Nundahl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3LOL, I did the same thing. I was wondering what the crap everyone was so excited about, then it dawned on me!
- gandalfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Go here:

My eyes turn red, lol. - raw10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool, and best "after image" application I've ever seen! For more info on after images, here's a link I found.... http://www.worqx.com/color/after_image.htm
It's not so much an illusion as taking advantage of "color fatigue" in your eyes. - Tanath, on 10/12/2007, -15/+14For your edification, "in case" is two words.
- zyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0very strange, but cool!
- SunAlex, on 09/02/2008, -1/+0oh yeah. cool . really cool.

http://search.ashtech.info/design - uncoolcentral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What am I missing? Doesn't seem so cool to me. You take an image, invert the colors and increase the saturation. Make that a rollover on top of of the original image in grayscale and voila! Exactly what you think would happen happens. Kind of a no-brainer. Have fun with your new toy!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5fudpacker? i was referring to the image on the site that digg linked to, which does not work. The link that was posted in the comments DOES work on both, perhaps that link was on the original page but I did not see it.
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4No workie for me either..
- nate5182, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I take that back. After I read a some of the comments I get it now.
- jacenat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3whats so strange about this?
basic chromatics ... nice effect though. - nate5182, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0This is really LAME!
- syco123, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2and its forever old. LAME!
- raabco, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Holy *****!
I mouse over the image, and I see Jesus!
I'm an xian now!
HAHA just kidding, apparently firefox is too smart for your little optical illusion...
well done making it to the top of the digg frontpage though! Makes me want to quit digg altogether. - vibez, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I always thought the aim was not to be able to make out the image before hand???
- Suplyndmnd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Where is the optical illusion? It's a mouse over. I was doing this "optical illusion" in 1998. Buried as lame
- Crin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Or IE!
- ubisuck, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Get IE Tab for FF 2.0, works fine with it ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3yay, i've been sitting here like an idiot wondering why it isn't working. Turns out it doesn't work in firefox.
What is Digg?
