In the US, it was quite common less than 20 years ago for a syndicated show pulling less than a 4 rating to not be renewed, now Oprah pulls a 4.5 and is one of the top rated syndicated shows on TV (behind Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy). The majority reason is that the ratings are now being split across 3,400 cable channels, and sadly not because people are getting out more instead.

Maybe we should focus on smart things like a never ending war on terrorism. China consistently ranks the bottom of the barrel in human rights, civil liberties, press freedom, and so on. Pretty crazy considering the government massacred over 8 times the number of innocent civilians than the Nazi's.
