- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+125Paki is not the preferred nomenclature, dude.
- Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59the racist part doesn't start till after the second email exchange... though this whole conversation sounds a little made up.
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -14/+62I smell a fake.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48If he is a professional, he wouldn't have acted this way.
If he is a professional, he would have known that people go to dubai for work to get paid 3 to 4 times as much as they did in the states.
If he is a professional, he would have given that guy a few links of his prior work.
If he is a professional, he would have gotten a job from his own contacts list that he "should" have better managed. - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -21/+62Mike the potential employer comes out much worse than the applicant, when he starts swearing:
"Jesus, that’s some chip you’ve got ..." and then "I wouldn’t want a bigotted arsehole like you ..."
I've seen some senior managers and directors being rude to interviewees and asking personal questions, so if this isn't fake, both Mike and Amir look incredibly unprofessional. Often I've seen that to be the case though - the potential employer is just as unprofessional (if not more so) than the applicants they interview. - r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -11/+43Seriously, people need to STOP DIGGING THIS SLANDEROUS CRAP! What evidence do we have that this actually happened? Come on guys, let's stop this before someone gets wrongfully accused and unfairly is given a bad rep. It's not right and sooner or later, some unscrupulous individual is going to use something like this to wrongly accuse someone that they don't like.
- luvkit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36Does it matter if he is "indian or paki?" The guy's a douche and an idiot... no matter what race or ethnicity he is.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23"and i have never worked for less than 2000 usd/month. You got it now!?"
Damn! $24,000 a year? That's some serious cash! - larsenm5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20this does seem incredibly fake. I would have thought that as soon as a company recieves a message from a prospective employer which has profanity in it they would simply cease to communicate further, red-flag him and let that be that.
However If genuine, they are both equally pathetic. Amir for simply being pathetic, the employer for reacting the way he did. - ApplCmptrDood, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25My dad is a senior principal engineer and he uses Yahoo!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=889+Bathurst+St,+Toronto,+ON,+Canada&ie=UTF8&z=18&ll=43.668116,-79.412023&spn=0.00286,0.006781&t=h&om=1
His "house" is in a commercial neighborhood. Also, I had to use Bathurst St because there is no Bathurst Rd. I concluded that it was fake after the guy's fist response. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Anyone who has worked in dubai/gulf knows that paki[stanis] and indians work twice as hard for 3 times as less...The UAE is so overrun by them that the locals learn to speak hindi as a second language. When applying for jobs in the gulf, its expected you place a passport sized picture on your resume and to mention the nationality of the passport(s) you hold.
The natural dubai order:
1. Locals
2. Persian - almost considered locals
3. White People(Cocky ass Brits, dumb ass americans, hippy europeans, etc)
4. non Gulf Arabs(Palestinian, Lebanese, etc)
5. Indians.
6. Pakistanis
7. Filipino
8. Indonesian, Ethiopian, etc, etc
I know its sad how ***** works down there, but its the reality. Before you go all crazy on me, the people who encourage this the most are #3 kind above, especially those cocky ass brits.
Hope this was a little informative to you guys, maybe you'll understand a little more about the posting... - SilverGinger5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16If this isn't a fake then this guy is royally screwed. I would guess that 95% of web design companies will now run a google check on any applicants to try to find their work and unfortunately for this guy a google search brings up pages about this already.
- shodanx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18nah, it's a fake, no ***** here ;)
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Or you'd be sent to Quebec with the rest of the French.
- Ratty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I've known of Pakistani people to use the term 'paki' when refering to themselves. How is this word any different than calling a Briton a 'brit'? It's just an abbreviation is it not?
- toby34a, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24http://www.duggmirror.com/design/How_NOT_to_Apply_for_a_Job_2/
- Shmoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I don't know what gives you the impression of a commercial neighbourhood, the map clearly shows a house surrounded by other homes. I live in Toronto and that is a residential area. The story could be fake but I don't think mistaking Rd. for St. really proves anything.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm of Indian descent and I live in Canada. I was born in England. I have to say that the use of the word 'paki' is very racist; even if it isn't meant that way, it's almost certainly going to be taken that way. It's not just a shortened way of saying Pakistani any more than 'chink' or 'jap' are acceptable shortenings. 'Negro' was an acceptable term for black people in the not-too-distant past. 'Negro' was then misappropriated by some racists the acceptable term became 'black'. Having dealt with some racism as a child (had bottles thrown at me and my family by skinheads. and being kicked off a bus when I was 6 years old alongside my older brother by a racist bus driver for no reason), the term 'paki' is used almost exclusively by racists when they beat, berrate, or otherwise make fun of anyone from that part of the world (who are often not even Pakistanis). I've been called a 'paki' a few times in my life (thankfully not THAT many people) and it's never been endearingly.
It almost seems to have become fashionable to make fun of the looks or accents of south-asians. TV commercials and movies throw in a thick accent when they need a laugh. This kinda thing mostly stopped for black people and east asians around the end of those old racist bugs bunny cartoons. I've heard the term 'paki-dot' a couple times when someone talks about a bindi, even at work. You'd never think of using the term 'n***** lips' in that situation. I couldn't even type that word.
Sorry to go on like this. I realize most Caucasians aren't racist and I appreciate everyone's freedom of speech, but this is about being nice and considerate. You don't HAVE to be polite, but you could consider it an honorable virtue. It's just that 'paki' is a term with a hurtful past and by not using it, you can probably save someone from some pretty ***** feelings. And no tiny ***** jokes...LOL... I read that digg article too.. I swear.. it just looks that way because I have giant balls. - kasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9ya, if you were acting like an ***** in Canada, you would be in prison.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Beyond a doubt a fake.....
Who puts dude in a formal business letter... - Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16amir saffarr? sounds racist to me.
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8well, i'm a brit too, and if i called someone paki in england, i'd expect a hiding. the word itself may not be racist, but the history/tone of it's use generally is
and yeah, he is an *****, and the other guy is terribly unprofessional and antagonistic - Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@tourney3po I work for a major ad agency in NYC. Our Chief Creative Officer uses her yahoo address in addition to her work address. I've seen any number of designers, web and otherwise, use gmail, yahoo, hotmail and AOL addresses.
Although I agree with your other points, being a web designer in no way means you must have your own mail domain. People use what works for them. - steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Do business emails usually read like this? Because this reminds me of stuff I've read on video game forums. . .
- darkened, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Dugg for further creating life long consequences from his actions.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To the people who think this is fake: I don't have proof this isn't fake but as an engineer who has interviewed developers, engineers, etc... I've come across this elitism & racism quite often in the workplace. Luckily it was never directed toward me but I see it all the time & at many workplaces & at many large companies that you wouldn't expect this sort of thing to be tolerated :)
- aonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Really rivet?
2k/month * 12 months = 24k/yr - uglymike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They both are
- Poon007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder if this Amir is on Digg. Wonder if he can see what a fool he came off to be in his emails. I agree with many of you that this does seem a bit made up, but I have hired many people and no one who is actual trying to get a job acts like that. I just like the fact that if this is true the hiring person, Mike, actually stood up to the jerk and laid into him.
If Amir is on Digg...WTF? - giveer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5sorry, but "voicing your own opinion", no matter how nut-f*cked it is, is not a crime here in Canada.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6United Arab Emirates. Dubai is mostly comprised of expatriates many from the western hemisphere.
- Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Many people put themselves in the "to:" line when bcc-ing.
- mecca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think the applicant is obviously a bigot, a jerk and probably isn't very smart. That being said, the blogger also acted very unprofessionally. For starters by calling the applicant a 'troll' and mentioning the phrase '***** a moose' in his out-facing corporate capacity. Sure, the applicant 'started it' but I would have to say that the two of them look like a couple of kids from here. Simply not replying after the racist email (or the subsequent email) would have shown far better judgment than the course of action the blogger ultimately chose.
- deepbl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pay no attention to this guy -- just another Brit who's pissed off because he has horrible teeth and is always spends too much money down at the pub.
(obviously I'm not serious; just proving the point, negative generalizations against a race or country with no basis is bigotry) - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know what i was thinking of doing. I live in Toronto, so I can maybe drop by where he lives and on his front door stamp "dugg"
- Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The funny thing is I'd love to work for someone like Mike. I hate idiots, trolls and annoying little know it alls. Sometimes you just have to tell someone "***** off" and move on with getting the job done.
Now if Mike had done this to an existing employee that would be different. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dude, why did you post his phone number here? Thats just being cowardly, and childish, and in the same league as stool pigeons.
- maisis00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you are digging for hidden meaning where there is none. Pun intended!
However, his blatant display of cultural disrespect trumped any political/philosophical debate he may have been trying to establish. Besides if what you say were true and if he were to have maintained the proper cultural respect in his argument the e-mail exchange with a job placement person is hardly the proper forum for establishing such as discussion. - maisis00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dude, what and A-hole! As I understand it use of the term "paki" is as off limits as the term "*****" in the United States. As in unless you are of the racial background for which this negative and slanderous term was first invented don't even think about using it. You do not even use it in jest, end of discussion. Wow, and to use a them like that when talking to someone about obtaining a job. Was this guy high or something?! Good Lord! What a bigoted F'ing moron.
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He sounds pissed off at the world or something... and $ 2k / month holy *****! I know web designers in the US that don't make that much... what a tool !?!?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What makes you think this is fake? If you had lived in Dubai you would feel differently. Racism like this is actually not uncommon for people (of varying nationalities) living there. And many people from poorer countries do work in Dubai for salaries that are lower than what someone from the western world would accept to be paid. Those are simple facts of life in Dubai.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You just did..
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3heh..
"Congratulations - you're famous"...
even MORE famous now that that little exchange has hit Digg. I believe that's the textbook definition of "Career Suicide". Great job Amir!!! - cyclo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cyberpass, your ranking is spot on I believe for most places in the Middle East. I worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia myself for 7 years for a place run by Brits so I know this. Only a few are arseholes but those that are are usually those who make and enforce the HR policies... Working for those guys however opened my eyes to the fact that if only I could get my skinny ass here in North America I would do well... I eventually was able to get here and indeed I am doing well... actually much better than if I spent the rest of my life working my ass off in the Middle East earning even more than if I went back to the Middle East with a North American passport.
One more thing, from my personal experience, and if this exchange is not a fabrication, I would put the blame more on Platt as he probably is more concerned about his job security than hiring a real expert who could do the job... - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fake or troll, either way publicity will only encourage the guy more.
- BigBill62629, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12This is OBVIOUSLY fake. These reasons should be apparent.
- Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Copy Pasta-ing resumes.
Serious Business. - LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mmm, me-sa lov-a da sauce-eh.
- Benzido, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's not racist because he says 'paki' - though that is the kind of first-grade understanding of racism that many diggers seem to share.
It's racist because he clearly states that it is appropriate to pay him more than an Indian or Pakistani because he's Canadian. He demands a higher wage (out of the blue, I might add) just because he comes from Canada. -
