--
And on topic.. Cool article & great diagram. - krelian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28How digg works:
Stories having keywords Kevin Rose, Digg, Apple, Amazing, top firefox extensions, 74 css tips = auto front page.
First comment is always dugged down about 100 times.
"Title says it all!!1" submission will always contain a comment about what a lazy moron idiot the submitter is (they are right).
If his royal highness Mr. Rose is posting a comment it will be dugg up to infinitum.
Most interesting stories never reach front page.
Digg is controlled by a small mob. To really enjoy the site you need to browse the not yet front paged stories.
Most digg users are no different than any other 16 year olds expect that instead of having Justin Timberlake posters in their room they have one of Kevin Rose. - simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20How Digg works:
Step 1: Submit blog loaded with ads to Digg.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit!
[Repeat.] - diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'm demoting him to Private Obvious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"the site's users, for the most part, seem to be genuinely and selflessly interested in promoting the best stories and burying the worst."
obviously not - dsendecki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Which was what, like a month ago? Quick, bury it; it's old!
- vhtrading, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Amen to this. It should read "the site's users, for the most part, seem to be genuinely and selflessly interested in promoting the best stories and burying the worst...just as long as it fits in with their political, scientific, and philosophical worldview."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Umm Digg does have moderators. Just because you can't see them that doesn't mean they aren't there. Who do you think bans people/spammers?
- foolonthehill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Shouldn't he be *promoted* to Major Obvious? Very few people have the capacity to make such an outstandingly obvious statement.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Excellent. Now I can link this when replying to the typical, "How did this make the front page?" comment.
- joecritch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yet another Digg-related story on the front page... perhaps there should be a dedicated "Digg" category in the Technology section...
- swOhio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually a demotion would be 1st Lieutenant Obvious. He would have to be decommissioned to be Private as it's an enlisted rank, not a commission/officer rank.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.digg.com/how
There is a link at the bottom of Digg on HOW DIGG WORKS - adam123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry for the reply abuse, but since when did How Stuff Works change their design so that it sucks?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You forgot steps 6 - 10
6 - 8????
9.) Submit article that used the words Apple, Linux, Google, F.O.S.S., legalize weed, RIAA & MPAA = MAFIAA, to digg under offbeat news.
10.) Watch your article break all previous records with diggs by over half a million users. - blackkbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you think they know they have been dugg?
- pirana0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's not voting, it's promoting.
- ongie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Amen to this. It should read "the site's users, for the most part, seem to be genuinely and selflessly interested in promoting the best stories and burying the worst...just as long as it fits in with their political, scientific, and philosophical worldview."
^ I definitely understand where you're coming from, DarkCyde... But I think part of the reason Digg is so successful is due to the eclectic mix of stories and viewpoints. That's the point of not having editors, I suppose.
There's no filter that can spin the story. Digg is really the true no spin zone... And it's because we can all spin as we like. There's no illusion of objectivity. - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ohhh, so that's how you register...
- alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How Digg Works :
1. User submits article.
2. Kevin Rose (username:kevinrose) diggs it.
3. Moderators, therefore, move it to the froont page.
4. Everyone diggs it.
5. Kevin Rose is happy.
6. ..and so are some diggers, who regularly fantasize about Kevin Rose day and night.
7. /digg - amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@dsendecki
I ddn't bury it. I dugg it. I like the story. I just thought it was interesting b/c I had almost forgotten what it was like with the topics on the side.. - amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Interesting the screen shots were taken back when topics, etc were on the left instead of up top.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Summary: Bunch of pre-teens vote on ***** web sites.
- mrharvey518, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So what are the secret requirements? Really I have no idea what they are talking about.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"not yet front paged stories" commonly referred to as "upcoming". Rest of your comment is right on the money. :)
- johnnyrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still don't understand how digg works. If this is a completely open system, and thousands of links stream in every hour, why are there certain links that solidify so quickly with so many hundreds and thousands of diggs?
The ratio of links submitted to links ending up on the front pages seems to be 100 to 1 or even 1000 to 1.
Someone please explain, where does that critical mass come from? And how does it build up so quickly? - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This has been on the FP before. Will it blend. In Soviet Russia Digg Duggs You. Captain Obvious can't believe this made it to the Front Page. Digg has gone downhill. Digg Me Down.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg is experiencing a high volume of traffic right now. Please try your search again later."
Search for "Digg algorithm/Digg algorithm change/Digg algorithm top users" later. There have been several articles arguing about changes that lowered the influence of the top 20 Diggers. The details are fully explained. - alrahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they explained the Digg Effect :P
- iMattK, on 12/23/2008, -0/+1I always wondered how this thing worked....
- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg is sort of like Slashdot without the editors"
Doesn't this really just sum it up :/ - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, isn't it great to have instructions on how to point and click on the internet, now in Web 2.0?
;)
This article could be about any web site, but at least they had the sense to choose Digg. - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I like how in "More Great Links!" del.icio.us is higher on the list than digg.com...
- Sc0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nicely wrote, i love howstuff works.. good read...
wish people would stop killing stories with comments. - LEBLANCmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intelligible for "someone like me" who didn't know anything about the subject. Step 2: Experiencing.
- mizztissa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol - you're right! and it didn't offer info on paying for diggs either!
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11...you sure about that?
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'd never thought I'd see Digg make it on there. That's a good thing to do and I hope Digg continues to grow.
- diggmeup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1inspiration at it's best
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@Piran0:
Voting: 1 winner and a bunch of losers.
Promoting: Everyone is a winner, just to different degrees.
The action is the same (giving +1 to something), it is just the inferred results that you are splitting hairs on. - macman117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i just sent this link to all of my friends and told them to join digg, you should do the same
- jinglee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The article does not talk about the shortcut way of paying websites to get dugg to the top...
- fastfastlane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Thanks. This was informative to a newbie such as myself.
- adiqiucorp, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Beloved DIGG, i know now how all works here.
1. register
2. browse and digg
3. comment

5. Submit
hey...but guys, where's the "how to reach the frontpage of digg" ??? I really need it :) - PyroKittens, on 10/12/2007, -74/+2Howstuffworks' view of digg

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
