Handy CSS layout generator for web developers
positioniseverything.net — Someone on IRC pointed me to this CSS generator, and the number of options and output are impressive. The ability to have verbose comments in the CSS is a nice way to learn what browser hacks are being implemented (and gives you an easy way to pull them out if you like). I can take no credit for this tool, so props to the appropriate party...

- digg it
- headzoo, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Interesting, but I think it would take me less time to hand code that layout than to answer all the questions on that page.
- Rice, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2That's one hell of a form on that page...
- userundefine, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1"Interesting, but I think it would take me less time to hand code that layout than to answer all the questions on that page."
Very true. - firehydra2k, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Way too lazy. I'd rather learn and figure this out than relying on a generator. Generators are somewhat handy, but they don't make you earn the backend of things.
And that form is huge. I don't want to fill out that much. Maybe they should have a beginner's version and a professional version or something to cut down on that list... - nneonneo, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1A lot of mac/safari hacks present...
- briandeitch, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2+digg. The code is very well commented and it makes it easy for us less css inclined people to understand the basics.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice tool. However I believe the CSS is a little bloated and can be condensed a bit. There are some more elegant tricks/hacks that do the same stuff this guy is doing. Great site though and very detailed code.
- bradmoreland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool. Maybe Digg's designers can use this to generate valid CSS.
- automagically, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think you have to know CSS by heart just to understand how to use the generator!
I'm glad they include those little question marks to figure out what each things is. Thats assuming the help text is laymen enough to understand.
Other than not making it easier to use in the first place (they had to create helpers), it looks really useful. Position Is Everything is one of those sites that CSS coders respect. - tofuComputer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2CSS is so easy it doesn't make sense to go down that road. Besides, what are you going to do every time you find a new hack is necesssary--go back and regenerate the the CSS over and over until you find the hack that works? No. You can't. At least you can't and expect to keep your job. However, if you are a "casual user" of CSS (not working to pay the rent/mortage) then you might find this page handy. Still, I as everyone else commented thus far, it's easier just to learn the language.
:)
chunkyJunk. - silvyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An easier page that I use alot is http://www.csscreator.com/version2/pagelayout.php
- headswine, on 10/24/2007, -4/+1Geesh. How many CSS helper pages are we gonna get here on Digg? Seems like 2-3 a week!
http://www.gfx.com - iodeken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also like csscreator.com more
- kepeli999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just tried a page and it looks good in IE but terrible in Firefox!
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of the HTML/CSS I've learned was by looking at what others have made. I think I will have fun making stuff with this then figuring out what it does by tearing it apart.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can handcode, but this looks great for those days when things are just "broke" and you got stuff todo, or your to tired to concentrate on big white notepad window
- mockstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's a lot of spam for a simple result
- Muzztein, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0web developers MY ASS
8===========D - - - - - - vagrantradio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Web developers do not need css generators.
- ashevilletech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That generator makes liberal use of the *html hack, which at the time I am writing this, will not be supported by IE7!!!
Lookie: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/10/12/480242.aspx - gedlandsend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Web developers do not need css generators.
True. It's a nice learning tool though. - gedlandsend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do us all a favor and keep your ascii pipe dreams out of the comments, mkay? Thx
- HardBap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0dugg...but do we really need another CSS story?
- rcook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Web developers do not need css generators.
Do they need Dreamweaver templates? - tayboo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0form is way to large
- GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0>> Web developers do not need css generators.
>Do they need Dreamweaver templates?
Exactly! I use Dreamweaver to put together the general page, then hand code the nitpicky stuff. This is one reason I am able to work so quickly. - GothGargoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not bad, BUT it uses 3 fixed-width columns.
It really bugs me in a major way to see sites with a fixed width. People run their screens at different resolutions people!! Do you people with large resolutions like seeing a bunch of pointless empty space at the sides of the content?
Folks, it isn't that hard to write CSS that has % width columns, so the content can use the whole page width!
Tools like this will only help to enforce bad habits - ghillie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Just tried a page and it looks good in IE but terrible in Firefox!"
So very true, not good for anything but IE. - prydonian93, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1pointless. It didnt even work. and id bothered filling in that monster of a form.
lol - lankymart, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0Link no longer exists...burying...
