- The0, on 04/02/2009, -11/+233I hate people who bitch and moan about the ads in Hulu TV shows. They place them exactly where the commercials would be if you watched them on TV, but instead of 12, it's ONE GOD DAMNED COMMERCIAL. And its ***** FREE. Some people have such a sense of entitlement and it's ***** stupid.
I will say that if YouTube puts ads in community videos, that will be ridiculous. However, if they follow in Hulu's footsteps, that will be perfectly fine, because I have enough patience to wait 30 god damned seconds. - Jeffler, on 04/02/2009, -2/+178Most subtle rick roll of all time
- Kali075, on 04/02/2009, -4/+155Sorry, we need to interrupt your Charlie the Unicorn so you can watch the same Jack-In-The-Box add four times.
- kevbryant, on 04/02/2009, -2/+141Welcome to Tube : It's No Longer About You
- MrJagil, on 04/02/2009, -3/+121At least the design changes. So much ugly, superfluous stuff on the site:
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/9717/whatidontc ... - GroundIsSound, on 04/01/2009, -4/+118ok, i guess someone should start working on a new youtube.
- Jeffler, on 04/02/2009, -2/+113As long as they don't copy their way into blocking out Canada I'm not complaining
- carondelet, on 04/02/2009, -2/+88I almost want to say that this is a day late for April Fool's....
- merreborn, on 04/02/2009, -3/+82Not only is it free, but you get to watch exactly what you want, when and where you want.
It's *better* than TV, *and* it has fewer ads. - Aleman360, on 04/02/2009, -7/+84Youtube needs to make money somehow. Seems like you feel like you're entitled to free ***** when in reality it needs to be paid for by somebody.
- toxicityj, on 04/02/2009, -0/+62they're also the only reason you're permitted to watch all of that stuff for FREE on hulu. However, it's bs that it would be added to USER-CREATED videos.
- nerd64, on 04/02/2009, -2/+44FTA "Videos in all four sections will feature in-stream, interruptive ads -- just like Hulu."
Thats an absolutely horrible idea for the "Community" and "Music" sections. Especially since the in-stream video ads are the most annoying part of Hulu. - LoganSerman, on 04/02/2009, -1/+41At least the layout is changing. It sucks right now.
- Aphrael, on 04/02/2009, -0/+36most user created videos are 4 minutes long at most, don't tell me they're going to put interruptive ads in such short video's?
- CrazedLeper, on 04/02/2009, -5/+41Yes, the dream is over. Good bye YouTube, hello suck and irrelevance.
- The0, on 04/02/2009, -1/+36Exactly! Thank you! Given the abundance of whiny comments, I was starting to feel a bit isolated over here on the rational side of this argument.
- seantubridy, on 04/02/2009, -5/+38This is typical and I think it may be a generational thing. I've had people get pissed at me because I don't upload all high resolution images of my illustrations to flickr - so they can download them as desktops and who knows what else. Well, I don't want you to download all of them as desktops and make them into other things (like prints that I sell myself), that's why I don't upload them in a large size.
I saw a comment on digg once that said "I'm sick and ***** tired of people sharing all this ***** on flickr, where the original resolution photographs are NEVER available. I don't want to see a picture, if I can't have it in the original quality."
What the hell? Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's free. Same goes for video. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -6/+31Oh man, way to ***** it up Google.
- beesaretasty, on 04/02/2009, -0/+25Really? I'm perfectly willing to watch my tv with a couple of 30 second ads thrown in. It's when they start getting greedy and making that 30 seconds run more like a minute that I run out of patience.
- dalittle, on 04/02/2009, -17/+40This is very surprising that Google would go to in-stream ads. They are the most annoying feature of Hulu and I will not use it as a result. Looks like I will stop using youtube as well and look for the next alternative (which there are a lot of)
- NJank, on 04/02/2009, -0/+23CalcProgrammer1: please tell me you're joking. or you just forgot the sarcasm tags.
"They should just invest in a self-sufficient server room... solar... water..."
And that money will come from ...? Investment costs will be recouped by ...? INCOME! whether you frontload a ton of money to minimize operating costs, or vice versa, you still need money to make it happen. People have salaries. Things break and need to be fixed NOW or the company starts losing money for every second of downtime. - Coopjust, on 04/02/2009, -4/+27OK, if you want to make money on ad revenue, I suggest the following:
-Buy your own high capacity server, including hard drive space.
-Setup the server securely
-Buy a high bandwidth line and pay for all the data usage
-Make your own site software, including conversion and a video player
-Build up your site and make it a brand visited by millions of people every year.
Then you can have a cut of the ad revenue.
Youtube is a money loser for Google already, it's just a great brand name. Google's costs to host your videos are more than they are making by banner ads right now. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -3/+24Exactly. Just watched, Louis CK's Everythings Amazing, Nobodys Happy. This is a great example of someone feeling entitled to something.
- merreborn, on 04/02/2009, -2/+22Who would WANT to?
Youtube's been losing millions of dollars per month on bandwidth for years. Who the hell would want to try to break in to that market? There's no money to be made.
In stream ads are going to suck. A lot. But we're going to put up with it in the end, because it's the only way *any* video sharing site will ever have a prayer of breaking even, much less turning a meager profit. - NJank, on 04/02/2009, -0/+18no. not on Youtube. Google is not a charity.
- thegallery, on 04/03/2009, -2/+20ad
- vat0r, on 04/02/2009, -1/+19I don't mind ads in video so long as they follow a few rules.
1. Only one commercial per video that is no longer than thirty seconds.
2. A large variety of targeted commercials so you don't see the same thing twenty five times a day and you're actually interested in what they're selling or promoting.
If they could do that I think it would go over well. - demooo, on 04/02/2009, -2/+19I would argue that Myspace video is the Myspace of internet video.
- infectthefrets, on 04/02/2009, -0/+17I think I found something you might like: http://quietube.com/
- blanksuspect, on 04/02/2009, -1/+18logged in just to digg you. streaming tv is such a great convenience these days that people feel inconvenienced to have to wait 15-30 seconds to get back to their content. Don't like it? Go watch real TV. Seriously, suck it up and enjoy free, quality entertainment. Sense of entitlement couldn't be more correct here. The internet is turning into a bunch of spoiled brats.
- M4NiC5, on 04/02/2009, -0/+16but you did.
- ArthurSucks, on 04/02/2009, -0/+15I just hope the new flash player is lighter weight than Hulu. Hulus player is a hefty one.
- dalittle, on 04/02/2009, -2/+16When I search on Google there are text ads and I actually USE them. It is a win win for everyone, the user and advertiser (and the advertiser has a much better percentage of sales for their advertising dollar). With in-stream ads they are obtrusive and annoying, they are fighting the user. You never win doing that, look at all the other search engines trying to fight their users and loosing (or web email for that matter). This has nothing to do with free and everything to do with making money.
- The0, on 04/02/2009, -0/+13I don't mind the commercials for the TV shows, but according to this, it says in ALL 4 SECTIONS, which means user-created stuff will have them as well. That's what I have a problem with.
- SpectreFire, on 04/03/2009, -2/+15Thank you!
Battlestar Galactica costs $2 ***** million to produce per episode. Where the ***** do you think the show would've gotten the money if not ads? Where the ***** do you think ANY show would survive without ad revenue?
Television is not free to produce! It ***** costs money!
Watching television is not a ***** entitlement. You want to watch TV for free? Then you have to watch the ads. You have to spend 15 minutes of your time going through ads, so you can enjoy 45 minutes of programming. - kevbryant, on 04/02/2009, -3/+15UsTube
- Logicexe, on 04/02/2009, -0/+12I highly doubt they'll start cutting up user videos with ads. At the most they'll stick something at the beginning. This seems more like something they are trying for tv shows and movies.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 04/02/2009, -1/+11You know, we have YouTube and we have Hulu. That works.
Why do we need two Hulus and no YouTube? I think this is foolishness. - nyxerebos, on 04/02/2009, -2/+11Not true, bandwidth is cheaper every year. in 2003 I was paying GBP10.00 per GB for bandwidth, last year it was 50p, now it's 2p. Recession aside, the online ad market continues to grow relative to traditional publishing/broadcasting. There IS money to be made. Invasive, interrupting ads are the result of greed, not absolute business necessity. The existence of so many video sharing sites without invasive ads (think tudou.com) seems to bear this out.
- ngmcs8203, on 04/02/2009, -0/+9Same could be said about the article that was FP'd yesterday aboout the "Hulufication of Youtube"
"Totally original I swear" - Breezeonhold
http://digg.com/tech_news/Coming_Soon_The_Hulufica ... - boomcubist, on 04/02/2009, -1/+10Yeah this is the third article I've read about it and no one has mentioned if it'll be US only. I wonder if it'll be available here in the UK?
- jpop, on 04/02/2009, -1/+9Fewer ads... for now...
- kevbryant, on 04/02/2009, -3/+11"It's just Tube now, F%$# You"
- anaclagon, on 04/02/2009, -0/+8They should just have a textbox popup when you visit the site that says to enter the name of the sponsor. All you would have to do is look at an ad on the page enter the name of the product and watch what you want commercial free. This would benefit the viewer and the advertiser greatly. The viewer would not have to sit through some crappy ass commercial and the advertiser would have confirmation that the viewer knows who sponsored the program.
- toadsworth151, on 04/02/2009, -0/+7I have no problem with the premium content but I don't want to be watching a video and then have an ad interupt it. Also getting rid of the channels section is a stupid idea.
- NewBrunswickMan, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7I have that same problem, i don't see how providing and advertising to canadians would be a problem.
We watch american tv and buy the same products advertised. - eclasssystems, on 04/02/2009, -0/+7Cheers to that.
- FuzzplugJones, on 04/02/2009, -7/+13Nice to know that I won't be getting a cut of the ad revenue they generate when they inline ads on my videos. Thanks, whores!
- Kali075, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6*****
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -9/+15This can only make Youtube worse. It's already really annoying with all the stupid ads, and doesn't Google make enough money already?
