- digg it
- kevyn, on 10/12/2007, -290/+50I dont see why this is important to anything or anyone. its just google, with a headline of that days news.
- goostoff, on 10/12/2007, -377/+52Oompa, Loompa, doodley dee,
This shouldn't be very hard to see,
Oompa, Loompa, don't give a damn
This looks like more crappy Digg blog spam! - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -31/+129That made me cringe.
- goat4, on 10/12/2007, -196/+11+digg for goostoff
- rtoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+269Wrong!
Do you remember how difficult it was to get any news or even have a website pull-up? Most of the big ones were flooded with hits and didnt respond. Google not only stayed up, the linked you to cached sites where you could get information. Not to mention how quickly Google put this stuff up.
Google kicks ass^10, plus they have free food in the cafeteria. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -162/+22Impeach
- diggywiggit, on 10/21/2007, -46/+975 years ago I was using Athlon XP 1800+ and no one gives a ***** about it so you can all digg me down.
- sloppy177, on 10/12/2007, -100/+26If you didn't get chillbumps/goosebumps, or have your eyes well up a little bit when you viewed that site, then you arent human.
- r2d7, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33I feel kind of bad for you guys. I have a television (well I did back then) and had many, many channels of news about it, as of about 5 minutes after it happened.
- OandA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Well being in new york city that day getting even google to load was a problem. I'm pretty sure it had to do with the massive blow verizons infrastructure took from the collapses.
- nigg, on 10/12/2007, -43/+21You mean, a bit like the people of Iraq and Afghanistan that US troops are slaughtering aren't human, and therefore don't matter in comparison to this?
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I do remember what I did, I was at school the schools never told us what had happened until we got home also we got a new pc that day so happy bday Pentium 4 1.4Ghz
- Spastastic, on 10/12/2007, -19/+13eh sorry my eyes didn't water. As the first post said, there isn't really anything special about the google front page on 9/11. Not really moving or anything of that nature. I was just listening to the howard stern show this morning and he replayed the show from 9/11 and that did more than anything bring back the emotions of that day than this did.

Ever read the 25th Amendment? I suggest you do so now. Impeachment and removal from office is not what you want. I always love seeing bumper stickers that say "Impeach Bush" because they're really saying "Cheney for President". - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Yeah, I dislike Bush as much as most of his subjects do, but imagining "President Cheney" is ***** scary, man. Just hang in there a couple more years....
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Fark.com was my news headquarters that morning. There was talk of bin laden within an hour.

- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+94i was expecting one of their trademark google "event" logos .. matter of fact, i'm surprised that they didn't come up with something for today.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/21/2007, -6/+167So long as they realize that a plane hitting the 'l' would be a little distasteful....
- alexcurpas, on 10/12/2007, -69/+7Yeah, I'm a bit dissapointed too. I was expecting something outrageously funny and silly.
- ScottyMo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15Yeah, I'm finding it hard to believe that they haven't done one yet.
http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html
Over the years, they've had logos for widely celebrated holidays and obscure birthdays. They've had current events and reminders. Up to this point, however, they haven't addressed one of the most significant events of recent memory.
In their defense, I also wasn't able to find anything related to Pearl Harbor or other similar remembrances. - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I was expecting a logo too, but I guess they figured it wasn't worth it to step on someone's toes. It would be SOO easy to offend someone, especially if you knew you had a relative that might have been involved.
Personally, my Dad flew to DC the day before the attacks, thankfully he called us (we were in California) at 6 something AM. Otherwise in the confusion of watching the TV we could have thought that he was dead. This truly was a tragic event. Kudos for Google for having a good cache of all the news. - zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15@MioTheGreat
I feel absolutely terrible for laughing at that, but the image in my mind was so funny... - meccaneko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I think their policy is probably to only create logo's for positive events that people celebrate, not for something as sad as this..
- Intangir, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6googles custom logos are mostly for celebratory days.. not national trajedies..
the only people who celebrate 9/11 are these guys www.newamericancentury.org
but dont take my word for it, go read their goals and plans on their website
tell me this doesnt chill the blood (written before 9/11)
"Further, the process of transformation,
even if it brings revolutionary change, is
likely to be a long one, absent some
catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a
new Pearl Harbor."

fortunately for them right after they got into power they got their new pearl harbour
and they and their friends have made billions of dollars since - cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They should have done something in rememberence, possible the new Freedom Tower as the L to show that we are still strong.
- linuxpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google doesn't make logos for "serious" events. I don't think they celebrate D-Day, and I know they didn't celebrate Memorial Day (http://newsbusters.org/node/5580). They try to make lighthearted, fun logos - something that would be downright disrespectful for certain events such as 9/11.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33Maybe today they can have a big american flag w/ and eagle logo.
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49I actually thought that they should have the Two Towers for the two L's in Google.
Then I realized there weren't 2 L's in "Google". - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25with the eagle eating apple pie?
- allenu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Please make the eagle crying a single tear drop as well!
- P155, on 10/12/2007, -49/+8They could have an american flag (modified with the islamic star and crescent to replace the stars) draped over the corpse of George Bush.
- Turki, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27@P155:
"They could have an american flag (modified with the islamic star and crescent to replace the stars) draped over the corpse of George Bush."
Islamic star and cresent WTF?!!!
Don't tell me that you belive a cresent and star are the symbols of Islam. Islam doesn't have a symbol.
And to tell you the truth: I'm sick and tired of people blaming Islam because of the attacks and crap like that. I really doubt that Bin Laden is a muslim, considering his history with the CIA. Just like wearing a cross doesn't make you represent Christianity, saying Allahackbur (sp?) doesn't make you Muslim.
PS: My nighbor is a Muslim, and he is the nicest guy in the building. - nwshc, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1@p155

- lwdallas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5@P155, You're needed elsewhere.
@Turki, I have Muslim acquaintances that I admire also, but you know what? Islam could do us all a big favor and *denounce* terrorism being committed in their name. Rather than celebrating 9/11 by tossing candy into the street. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8lwdallas: i wasn't tossing candy on the street, i was tossing out my french fries to replace them with freedom fries. i love this country so much, i must prove it each and every day and never question it. i must also denounce things i have nothing to do with. idiot

- Trention, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Kinda makes me miss the old days. Much less clutter on an already clutter-light site.
- afzilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Theres less clutter now, the groups logos and stuff are less intrusive
- floppyparty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33"Kinda makes me miss the old days. Much less clutter on an already clutter-light site."
Are you guys on acid? 5 years later and Google looks pretty much the same as it did before. YES, they added a few links, boo hoo. - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, in the article under the "more information" link (a good article, BTW), it shows that Google added tabs to the homepage that October (and has a screenshot, when it was only 4 items). From there it grew into the mini-portal it is today.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6"5 years later and Google looks pretty much the same as it did before. YES, they added a few links,"

- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Quick, Google the number for 911!
Edit: Damnit, antoniojvr beat me to it - ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Not surprised.
Was it AOL search or MSN search that ranked their number one listing as "google"? It was one of the two, I forget.
Anyway, people will walk to the ends of the earth if it means not having to touch a keyboard. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25my parents type web address into the google search box instead of the address box... ive tried to explain it would be faster to just type it up top than to have google search for it and then click on the link to the website...
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually, I can see this really.
I have gotten more used to useing Google's toolbar to go to a corporate website then actually typing in the companies URL.
Its kind of braindead really concerning CNN (www.cnn.com), but there are a lot of corporate websites that are not so obvious (like Nissan motors try and go to www.nissan.com ). Its just easier because 9/10 times, Google will put the corporate website first without having to remember that Nissan's website is actually Nissanusa.com.
Its worse if your in Canada because you often want to go to Canadian pages, so typing in Nissan Canada removes any ambiguity of accidently typing in Nissan.com or assuming Nissan.ca. Many global corporations do not necessarily use the .ca suffix to designate Canadian websites.
The bottom line, it comes out of habit. I seldom type in URL's anymore. - BufordT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I know a lot of people who think the way to type in a website address is to go to google and search for "www.cnn.com" There is an astonishing amount of people out there who are totally baffled with the concept of the address bar.
- Elias1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If I'm not 100% sure of the URL of a website my guess is usually wrong, so in the long run I end up saving time by:
-loading google
-typing website name
-clicking first result
rather than:
-loading what i think is the URL
-loading wrong page/error page
-loading google
-typing website name
-clicking first result
I think many others are the same - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"Quick Lisa, whats the number for 911"
--- Homer J. Simpson - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Ever noob I know does that. They'll go to google.com and type www.cnn.com in the search bar. They don't just do this for sites they can't remember the name of. It's ever friggin one. If you think you are going to need google to remember a website's name....here an off the wall idea....bookmark the site or add it to your favorites. Then you won't have to type at all. If you are two lazy to type .com just type "cnn" in the address bar and hit ctrl+enter.
- Haiyadragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Firefox will google lucky anything but a complete address you give it on the address bar. My sister just types the names and Firefox will redirect through google. It shouldn't be transparent, but it is.
- quanta88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I remember how CNN.com looked like that morning. They were getting so slammed they took down the whole site and only showed the one article. The article was in plain text (i.e. Courier font), no images. This was despite the fact they were load balanced on multiple Akamai servers.
It was kinda freaky in its own right. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mecole21
Thats nothing. My parents actually search google for "www.what i'm looking for with spaces and everything.com" no, they're not searching for a specific site. They're just. Stupid.

- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Maybe I'm just over-thinking, but I like how Google made a point to remain neutral with "Breaking news: Attacks hit US" despite all of the hype from the media.
Google could've done anything - They could have said "Al-Qaeda attacks US!" or "Terrorists attacking US!" or even "SPONSORED BY [Insert media conglomerate here]: [Insert wildly radical "news" headline here]" but instead chose to stick to the only fact anyone really knew that day: The U.S. was being attacked.
I just found it intriguing...- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Could it be that Google is not beholden to the US Government? Not spouting off like other news sources, not giving up search records, but quietly tracking searches, reading email etc. Google ~= NSA. :)
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I suspect their strive towards objective neutrality is one reason for not having a 'holiday themed' logo today.

- briankoenig03, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Can you seriously not figure out how this is relevant?
- nigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4It's relevant because it only matters when citizens of the USA die en masse. And ***** the rest of the world.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Marked as lame. It's not really that interesting. Hey if someone has a cache of The Windows On The World website from that day it would be interesting.

BUZZ...wrong
Jackie Chan Almost at WTC on September 11, 2001
(by digitalmediafx.com) Last week, word was released that several Hollywood films were undergoing revisions (due to the WTC attack) including Jackie Chan's next action adventure (with limited visual effects), Nosebleed. One of the scenes in the script was to take place on top of one of the World Trade Center towers. Chan has told the Oriental Daily News that shooting of the World Trade Center scenes were to begin on Tuesday, September 11, including many early morning scenes being shot on the roof of the World Trade Center. A late script revision delayed the shooting. Chan says, "I would probably have died if the shooting had gone ahead as planned."
Many scenes of Nosebleed are now being reedited and shot, particularly since the movie was about a World Trade Center window washer and a terrorist plot to blow up the Statue of Liberty. - aragami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4good trick if he could film 2 films at the same time, he was in Canada filming the tuxedo on the 10th of September :p

WRONG - enkafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The CNN thing isn't surprising because their site was struggling. I believe they went with plain text for most of the day, but you only knew that if you were lucky enough to have the page no time out. In fact, I can still tell you how I was getting on their site. For some reason robots.cnn.com was running full speed ahead.
- skwid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I guess a lot of people were pushing the 'I am feeling lucky button' on that day ...
In fact, I was feeling lucky too, to be sitting in front of my computer ! - ryno2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You're un-american if you don't digg this pointless story!
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1You're right, I'm not American you twit. I'm Canadian.
- ryno2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@spacebar
Yeah, I'm Canadian too. So what? - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So why would I digg this stupid story?
- dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish I were sitting in front of my computer - I was in Russia on a mission trip with our church. We were supposed to be flying back the 12th, I believe, to make it back to my brother's wedding. Well - we were believing that there was nothing that would stand in my way to get to his wedding, we had like an extra day's worth of time to get back in time.
We were wrong.
One day (I believe it was evening time), our pastor called us into his hotel room, and there were about 10 of the group sitting on the bed, staring at the TV. Right in front of our eyes, we saw a burning tower, and couple of minutes later, we actually saw the 2nd hit... scary to say the least. We had to stay an extra 4 days to get out. On our flight back, it was a sober reminder - we were riding in a 767, with only about 40 people on board.
Man I wish I was able to google at my home :-) - u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, I think it's interesting to look back to see how the 24 hour news stations looked prior to 9/11... and that is WITHOUT the news scroll at the bottom. That scroll, while used prior to 9/11, really hasn't stopped ticking since that day.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, it was there long before 9/11.
- bladefallcon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While the look of Googles homepage 5 years ago really doesnt seem all that important. It is interesting that someone decided to take a screenshot of it. I remember going to Google a few times an hour to use its cached links to news sites. I was in school, and had sno access to a TV. All I had was the computer lab with an internet connection. I skipped class to stay right there in the lab, checking the news.
- cyphin6, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3God Bless America
- cyphin6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is it wrong these days to say "God Bless America"?
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4i don't know why this is news. sorry.
it's the normal screen with some links at the bottom.- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because it's 9/11, and for as long as you're alive you'll hear about or see things that went on that day.
"OMG, here's the screenshot of tubgirl.com on 9/11."
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because it's 9/11, and for as long as you're alive you'll hear about or see things that went on that day.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2first comment - woot!
- remiprev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm... no, sorry.
- Ladon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is irrelevant information.
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1good find!
- funkychikensays, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i dont get it.. how does this have to do with the google homepage?
- jonathan95060, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1“Nostradamus”, LOL.
If you ever had any doubts that the world is populated by a bunch of superstitious rubes the fact that 9/11 caused millions of people to search for "Nostradamus" obliterates all doubt.- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha yeah, just goes to show how stupid people are.
It's kinda sad, really :(
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha yeah, just goes to show how stupid people are.
- kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, this isn't "new" news, but I dug the post because it helped remind me that today was 9/11. My heart and blessing goes out to all those who died that day.
To some of the earlier commenters, yes it was 5 years ago, but should we forget that this event happened? Have some heart people. Think about the people that lost loved ones that day or the firemen that died while trying to save others lives.- LKBM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Harping about it all day each year and completely forgetting about it are not the only two option. We don't have a yearly news stories about this any more than we do about Pearl Harbor and the Tsunami.
No one has suggested forgetting about it. If you can't make your case without straw men, perhaps you should step back, take a breath, and try looking at it objectively for a moment.

- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I remember is groggily getting out of bed and being shocked when i saw the morning news showing the WTC south tower and Pentagon ablaze. I was a freshman in high school during this incidence. We listened to the radio or watch some TV news. Nonetheless i didn't do much that day.
PS. Nostradamus!? That's ***** hilarious. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing I remember was that it seemed like the Internet as a whole just became something completely different that day. ESPN.com, pro wrestling sites, video game sites, all had huge tributes to 9-11.
Even x11, the people behind the tiny wireless camera ads, instead of serving camera ads in their pop-ups they served 9-11 tributes. - DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On good reason for "cnn" being the top query- IE / FireFox with google toolbars or google as the default search engine. Kinda like when MSN had "google" as their top query. By default, IE searches for the site if you don't enter .com or whatever.
Funny that it was five years ago. Doesn't seem that long, and yet it feels like an eternity.
On a less somber note, let's identify all the people that searched for "Nostradamus" and round them up. We can put them on an island, or something. - Psylo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1i was on irc 5 years ago. Suddenly, a big netplit happened, all american people began to talk about "terrorist missile attack" on manhattan.
So i open a champagne bottle. - badbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Am I the only one who's ***** sick and tired of hearing about 9/11?
Not only do you hear about it on the anniversary (expected, I'll give it that), but you hear it every other goddamn day of the year.
STFU already. Can we have a ***** 10 month time span where someone stops mentioning 9/11 this or 9/11 that (especially politicians). Thank you.
9/11 to me is no longer tragic because of what happened to 3000 people, but because that is the day everyone became ***** stupid and gullible. - bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I was in class not giving a *****, just like today.
- aneedles09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder why google didnt set a theme for the site today; they usually do.
- dontpassthefenc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A crying bald eagle eating pie, playing baseball and shooting osama with an m16, and hed be wearing a yankees cap with an american flag (or I HEART NY) tshirt and nike shoes, wearing denim jeans, with a Semper Fi tattoo on his upper arm.
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya - since that really is the average American.... Oh wait! It's not.
- TehKid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I remember what i was doing.... LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!!!
- Stephiems, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You don't deserve the life that has been given to you. The world would be a much better place if we could trade people undeserving of life like you, for the lives of the innocent decent people who have died in tragedies like 9/11. More then just Americans died that day. It was called the 'WORLD' Trade Center for a reason. I don't laugh when people die in Iraq, I don't laugh when people die in Afghanistan, I didn't laugh when people died in the tsunami, I don't laugh when people die....period.
I don't doubt you were one of the people dancing in the streets cheering that day. It is always sad when people die unnecessarily and is not dependent on race, religion or color. - gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@TehKid
That's not even something you joke about. Seriously - I'm surprised I didn't throw up when I read that comment. How could you laugh when thousands of people die?
