- sobriquet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36I'll be at the midnight show. This movie just looks amazing. Mounds of special effects are nothing without style, and Zack Snyder has done an excellent job of delivering both.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29bastards. from the title i thought this was going to be a gallery of some guy bowling a prefect game....
- sensibledriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Dear Wired:
Your photo interface sucks...it's not even "so 1999"....get with it. They have these things called slideshows where you don't have to reload the page and reset the user's window position...amazing! - AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20ripped from ytmnd?

made 2 weeks ago - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I agree, not to mention it's one of history's most impressive stories, and also was inspired by an incredible graphic novel.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Limbs(many of them) do come off, there is lots of blood...it's not completely realistic though. It does exist in a "comic book" world though. Don't go in there expecting a historical recreation. I know some are...
- bazuden, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It's the way Miller has portrayed it, like George Bush's War on Terror - not exactly accurate, but with an interesting perspective.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I saw this back in December, really. (Proof: http://www.aintitcool.com/?q=node/30936 , I was there.)
Who here wants to kill me now? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@franksands
Unfortunately, it wasn't 300 men against the Persians. 300 Spartans, but with the Thespians and Thebans, some estimates put the number closer to 10,000, although 6-7,000 seem to be the most realistic number.
This should not detract from the actual feat though. There were 200-250,000 Persians attacking, and to defend against this number, even for 6-7 days, was an incredible achievement. If you want a good read, check out 'Gates of Fire', as mentioned by galael further down.
I've read Franks Miller's 300, and although it was still a good read, it is not a match for any of the Sin City stories. And what with the weird fantasy element? Cleavers for hands? Giant elephant-like beasts? None of this was in the comic book? (sorry, 'graphic novel'!) - quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Its a graphic novel. They didn't even try to hide it. Its "Frank Miller's 300". Comon.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8If the days of "epic" are over .. what would you call Lord of the Rings?...
Surely you'd consider that Epic... - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The thing with this movie is it LOOKS amazing, and that is enough to make me want to see it. I don't care if this ends up to be the worst movie in the world (I'm hoping it won't be...) because the visuals alone would be worth watching through it.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The graphic novel is amazing. If you've read it, you'll definitely notice how the movie looks like it made the book come to life.
I'd also like to point out that this is all fiction, created for your viewing pleasure. Though it is based on the real battle of Thermopylae, it is far from being factually accurate. - Ja50n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7nine inch nails- just like you imagined
- paleodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I completely agree with your statements. Steven Pressfield's fantastic novel, The Gates of Fire, tells the story of Thermopylae so vividly and with such insight into ancient and modern psychology and culture that the book is used by the U.S.armed forces in their Officers Training programs. I wouldn't be surprised if this comic book movie of the tale totally disappoints those who would like Pressfield's version to come to the big screen.
- WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ mycatsboots : There are other books and movies based on the Battle of Thermopylae where the 300 soldiers die, so the title is to distinguish it from those movies and let people know it's an adaptation of Frank Miller's comic/novel.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dude, have you ever read Herodotus's "Histories"? There's very little description of the battle itself in the book. Frank Miller had to take what little source material he had and expand on it. That's how this movie was even possible. Otherwise, if you go with Herodotus, it would be a 30 minutes segment on the history channel.

Nice Try!
learnt (lûrnt) pronunciation
v.
A past tense and a past participle of learn.
Back on topic. I am very glad to see these kinds of movies being made, because I am rather bored with the same old crap coming out of holly wood as of late. - DurkaMcDurk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm really getting tired of all these people trying to make "epic" films, but this movie is either going to confirm how I feel or completely obliterate it. Hopefully the 2nd because this movie looks ***** amazing.
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Its based on the graphic novel buddy, it pretty much says so everywhere in all the trailers and crap. Pay attention or read a bit before you go out claiming that this is a realistic interpretation of the Battle of Thermopylae.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4Eh, What is history without a little bloodshed?
- AnotherCanadian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i get goosebumps every time i see the trailer. this thing looks like it's going to be legendary.
oh hoo hoo. there they are again! - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4"Steven Pressfield's fantastic novel, The Gates of Fire."
Looks like I've got my next reading after American Gods (by Neil Gaiman, finished Neverwhere and absolutely -loved- it, I don't really like American Gods as much as I did Neverwhere. Then again I'm only 127 pages into American Gods)..
Thanks for the recommendation. :) - quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Uh, what page is this on? I've got the graphic novel, and read it again this morning: No tree of dead.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This movie is the next quantum leap in CGI that will leave us stunned. I remember Final Fantasy and gasping "they figured out how to do hair"... Now they've shown CGI is cheap when trying to simulate difficult "reality" - it's come of age in creating fully stylized worlds like this.
I'm pre-awed by this film. - ninjasfromspace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Epic!
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This movie doesn't even need a plot or good acting. Just show me 1.5 hours worth of those visuals and I'll be more than happy.
- killervibe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow! I cant wait to see this on the IMAX.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If only they had nice high resolution photos to use for multi-monitor backgrounds.
- jlewicki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2got my tickets for imax :) checked the site every day until they were available
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The film is only loosely based on the graphic novel '300' (although it does transfer some scenes accurately...)
The graphic novel was only loosely based on the film 'The 300 Spartans'
'The 300 Spartans' was only loosely based on the actual Battle of Thermopylae - jmack111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This movie is going to be AWESOME!!!!
Its probably my most anticipated movie of 2007.
Although ... now that I stop and think about it ... There are a few great movies coming out this year. - MrDaniil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Effects looks nice, but I really want to see the movie because of music in the previews. Anyone knows the soundtrack?
- g3r4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its not exactly "Sin City 2" but, like you, I'll be there first night.
- manvsmonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. I'm reading about all this stuff in college right now. I just crammed for a test the other day. I think Herodotus was criticized on his objectivity and recount of events since around his time. He's credited with being the father of history though, and I'm too lazy to look up the person who was said to outshine him in his historical pursuits in documenting the Peloponnesian War. Thucydides?
- bazuden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2'Arab-looking Greeks'? What the *****?? How many Arabs have you seen lately? Not enough to know what one looks like, thats for sure.
- Seruphim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3THIS IS SPARTA!
- yokel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3After a long time I was completely blown away by a trailer!
- KevinWhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely seeing this one in IMAX, it looks amazing
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+3Just how graphic is it? Is it worse than Gladiator?
- bazuden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've read and learnt about enough history to have respect for what really happened. I just wanna see another Frank Miller masterpiece come to life the way it should on the big screen!
- yashnikov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't wait!
- KarthVader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been waiting for this movie after I read the graphic novel. Saw some clips on Rotten tomatoes and I can't emphasize enough how much this movie is gonna rock. I'm a huge history buff, especially Ancient Greece. I am anticipating this movie just because I know that Frank Miller's work is quality and that is movie will be the same.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I hope that is, by the time I get an HD-DVD player Blu-Ray has lost so I can get this on HD-DVD.
Can't wait to see this in March! - franksands, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ soogy:
of course they changed almost everything from the actual history. But the main fact is that it was really 300 men against an army of thousands, in real life. No giants, No robots, no superpowers. Just that is pretty amazing. - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+2I really, really, want to see this. I can't wait.
- acuratami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Plenty more images right here. 52 images in total.

- rasputinstwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the battle itself is pretty cool, check out the google earth/map view and you can see how they held of soo many troops:
http://www.intrepidearth.com/tour/07/02/21/index.php?loc=default - Capand, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am actually friends with the messenger who gets pushed into the well. He's a friend of the family and on New Year's Eve a couple of friends and I were talking to him and he was telling us about the making of this movie. I don't remember much of what he said, though, I was kinda drunk =P
I just remember that it was a lot of work and a lot of detailing and there's gonna be another really cool movie coming out that will trump 300 in the next few years, and he's a big part of that so that's something to look forward to.
Oh yeah his name is Peter Mensah. Google him. -
