Dugg down - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Not everybody has the skill to design their own site or the money to hire a professional designer. I'd rather see somebody use one of these designs than steal a copyrighted design or worse yet create their own myspace-esque monstrosity.
Hell, I DO design web pages for a living, and I still keep a bunch of templates around. I occasionally use them for inspiration when I'm stuck, or borrow a graphic or style sheet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am seeing an increasing trend where clients are coming to us to customise a web template they have purchased from one of the many sites that offer them.
My experience so far has been that they are always poorly coded. Some of them even use tables. Some use masses of java-script to perform rollover effects that could have been easily accomplished with a couple of lines of CSS. And don't get me started on the ones that are created using hundreds of gif's and/or jpg's.
I would suggest there is no quality control on these templates. It reaffirms what I always believe - you get what you pay for. - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Comment!

I think you may over-generalize the situation. I have seen my share of bloated templates, but they do save a lot of time and generally provide something that looks much better than I could come up with.
