Dude, don't bash an animal that is in you name! - Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Flash Player 9 will, according to Macromedia, be launched simultaneously for Windows AND Linux for the first time!
- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41@nuclearpenguins: You moron...digg is run on Linux. I guess digg is hurting themselves by running it?
- GotGoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33It has not been released. Only the name has changed.
- illynova, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31According to nuclearpenguin's profile, his website said the following...
"Apache/2.0.53 (Fedora) Server at www.rivalzgaming.com Port 80"
I hope thats a real operating system! Wouldn't want his website to go down since its only a toy os... - Agraek, on 10/12/2007, -16/+44nuclearpenguins: ten to one says your website runs with the penguin. So stfu before you get into an argument you can't win.
- Woofcat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28How about tossing Linux users flash 8 let alone flash 9. Man Flash 7 sucks major ass.
- timsco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Here is the state of the Flash Player on Linux. Macromedia is going to "skip" a Linux release for eight and go right to 9.0:
http://www.kaourantin.net/2005/12/flash-player-8-for-linux-update.html - konspence, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Macromedia promotes themselves as a web standard, and then they go and don't support Linux? How does that work?
You cannot have a web standarrd and then go to neglect a large number of users. - bryant, on 10/12/2007, -19/+36Don't bash tux, man. He's just to cool to work.
Burke: Well, at least now it's possible you might get Flash Player 8 soon! - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17So what you mean to say is that because your NOT YET RELEASED AS STABLE distro took a dump on you, GNU/Linux as a whole must be terribly buggy? That explains perfectly why so much mission critical, stability-is-a-must computers run it...
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I hope we have an opensource flash implementation soon, this is seriously getting lame.
- ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16We should have Flash 9 in Linux really soon (there won't be Flash 8 at all) -> http://www.kaourantin.net/2005/12/flash-player-8-for-linux-update.html
And if you need Flash 8/9 under Linux now - windows version works great under wine. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Hey, how about tossing 64 users a version?
- drzeus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Linux users will be getting Flash 9. It was announced on one of the Flash Player developer's blogs a while back. It will probably come out a couple months after the main release, but it's coming. He said that they switched the codebase to gcc this time around to make it easier to get the player on more platforms.
- katanna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13ITA... reported the article as "Inaccurate" because version 9 has NOT been "released," they have simply changed the name of the not-yet-released 8.5 to 9.
Matthew - pandaweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10flash 9 for linux should be released about the same time that flash 9 for mac/windows is, or so macromedia says. im pretty happy about that
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Flash Player 9 hasn't been "released" yet, it's just had a name change from 8.5 to 9.
It'll be released this summer. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@7of7
Oddly enough, in the techie circles I've been known to frequent, the guys that run Linux (mostly Fedora Core and Ubuntu) do so because they find it to be more stable than Windows XP. I myself can count on one hand the number of crashes I've had (some of which were my own fault - programs I've written that were unstable), though, to be fair, I've only been using Linux since RH9 (and stepped up to the Fedora Core releases - supposedly in "perpetual beta," yet I've had no stability issues).
I guess my point is, YMMV - but in my own experience and the experience of others I know, Linux on the desktop is not "buggy and crash prone," and to say that Windows XP is more stable is just laughable. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8We've been lied to before so I will believe it when I see it.
If they happen to be lying again, karma will comeback and bite them in the a$$. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It looks more like just a rename than a release.
- grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i use all 3 either at home (Linux and XP) and at work (OSX and XP) and i am not some circle jerking nerd and I will tell you Linux is better. I don't have to worry about some sad ass 15 year old who gets mad at his school and writes some program that will erase your harddrive and nsyncrules@aol.com decides to foward a picture of his wet cat on a comprimised box to everyone in the world. I also don't have to worry about paying $4000 dollars for a computer and $300 for software that I can get perfectly free from open source that will read and write to those $300 programs that I have to wait to use because of bugs and *****. Oh by the way, this sissy dork can step from behind his dual boot, Xp and Ubuntu box and whoop your ass.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@nuclearpenguins (hah ironic, penguins and a linux hater)
is that a new record? -139 diggs... wow. - marquis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's not Macromedia any more. It's Adobe.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Flash developers need to remove the ability for the player to load ads on top of other sections of the page, frankly I am tired of having to click close when i'm on a website to read something...
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I haven't tried this on my Linux box but isn't it possible to get Flash 8 on Linux with WINE?
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Flash just sucks, im sorry, it might just be me, but i hate the embed tag
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uninstall Flash. Bam. 98% of web annoyances gone, just like that. Or at least get Flashblock for Firefox, so you can choose which Flash objects you want to run.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6use flashblock in firefox....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5anyone without flash might get.. irritated viewing say.. youtube or google video.
But beyond that, the web looks so much cleaner without stupid f'k'n flashy web banners, videos playing, etc to get you to buy crap.
Hell, screw ad-blocking software, just don't install flash and alot of your problems are solved. MySpace is almost tolerable without it. - tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I despise flash for imposing animated advertising advertising on the sheeple with no option to turn it off. I know the kind of people who come here are savvy enough to know how to use things like Flashblocker. But still - I hate flash. No digg.
- mourner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Right, you would be happy to use Firefox with Adblock. :-)
- forteller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It hasn't been released, they just anounced a "namechange" of an upcoming version.
Reported as inaccurate. - ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use flashblock extension under Firefox. It works really great - displays "play" button instead of flash (which is displayed only after user clicks "play" button).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't you love how Macromedia and now Adobe treat Linux like an ugly step child? They still have not released a version 8 of the flash player for Linux and there already anouncing version 9 for Windows. Earth calling Adobe!!! The penguin is pis..ng on your logo!
- wbeck85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From: http://www.kaourantin.net/2005/12/flash-player-8-for-linux-update.html
"We have a few very good engineers working on the Linux version right now in parallel to the work we do for 8.5. 64bit versions will take a little longer, there are no definite plans just yet. Just recompiling will not work unlike what you might think. The main issue here is the x86 JIT in the virtual machine and the mark&sweep garbage collection which are not 64bit aware right now, work on 32bit pointers only. Adding and testing this is not a small task as anyone who ever worked on this type of low level infrastructure might be able to attest. I can really only ask for patience here, we are aware that we need to offer a solution as soon as possible." - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Insulting that the Linux version is still at 7 after a year:

- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My linux system has been broken many times - why? Because I do many things on it that I couldn't even think about doing under XP. Each and every time I've been able to fix it fairly easily, and each and every time it's been my fault one way or another (either installing unreleased software or screwing up something myself).
On the other hand, if XP breaks, wish you luck trying to find why. Let's not even talk about fixing it. - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FFS... I just took the time to close all my browsers and upgrade to 8 yesterday... By the time they release 11, I should have gotten around to upgrading to 9 on at least one computer...
- r00723r0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's nice to know that Macromedia is continuing to be complete ignorant idiots. They're improving their flash, but still haven't gotten their asses out of the 32-bit hole. I can't watch flash until they make a 64-bit version. Yes, it's because I run Gentoo Linux (a distribution that compiles source into binaries), and I refuse to use 32-bit binaries for Firefox, because I'd rather not take a step back in technology for a company that doesn't worry about the future.
- nperriault, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How can such a hoax can access Digg homepage ?!
It has not been *released*, just *annouced*. People, just click links and read before digg ! - Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Comment from Flash Product Manager's blog on April 4:
"Sorry! I don't have an official update for Linux at this time. Linux wasn't expected in this beta, since we plan to ship it after the Win/Mac release. It's not at beta level at the moment, but we will have a public beta when the time comes."
So, they release a beta for Flash 8.5 (now 9) for Windows. No beta for Linux. And now it will be released "after" the Windows version. That could be ANY time after.
This is silly. Flash pretend they're cross-platform when they are clearly not. They should just suck up the bad press, come out and admit it and move on as a Windows-based application. But, they should really stop pretending they're cross-platform.
And the person who wrote this post intentionally mislead people as Flash 9 is not released. No Digg just for that. - Woofcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 (US and Canada only)

Harp on them to get it out the door. - sonu27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know, please delete this.
How did it gets all the diggs in the first place. I don't know. - ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, Firefox for Windows + Flash 8 both works under wine as good as native programs. Really :)
- sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The headline is inaccurate. I reported this story. Flash Player 9 is not out for download. It says the release is this summer. Stop posting sensationalist headlines that are false.
- teddyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4
There is 0% informative content in the article. It's just a 10 lines annoucement. yet another guy using digg for getting inbound links. Lame.
