- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -2/+43No really, give Google it's own category.
- TextingTina, on 07/10/2009, -4/+40Microsoft may suck, but they are the only company that can provide competition to Google in the online advertising space. I don't think you want google owning 90+ % market share in the search market. That could be expensive to the websumer in the long run. Competition is GOOD. Let them bicker and fight. This only benefits us :)
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -2/+32Because Windows' entire success hinges on the netbook market. Right.
- JCEEZ, on 07/10/2009, -0/+30Ive read a couple of computerworld articles off digg now. They are always written really poorly.....despite having some decent content.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -3/+30When Andriod hit the blog's everyone was like "OMG the iPhone is dead, google RULEZ". Now google's going to slap a boot screen on slackware or some ***** and hope that they can do something that ubuntu, fedora, etc haven't?
It may be google, but it still will be linux at the core with all of the benefits and drawbacks. Translation, Microsoft isn't going anywhere. - RoroCo, on 07/10/2009, -2/+26Why do people have so much angst over operating systems? They are all just software people. Use what you want and let others use what they want. Lighten up, Francis.
- pklall, on 07/10/2009, -1/+25Except that Google Chrome OS *is* Linux
- gcnaddict, on 07/10/2009, -3/+23People thinking Chrome OS will supplant Windows are delusional.
Everything is being offloaded to a browser... so how exactly does one plan on running DVDs or other media? songs? syncing media players? Unless Google plans on turning Chrome into the ultimate multitasking browser, it's not going to work. It's going to end the same way WebTV did or how those older dedicated web computers died.
This is more barebones than what Microsoft offers for netbooks, and if Google thinks they're going to win with this, they're dead wrong. This isn't a disruptive product; it's a mere attempt at entering a space with an inept product. That and announcing something like this more than a year before launch is just prepping Microsoft to deliver a crushing blow. Office Web and Office 2010 get formally announced and demonstrated this Monday. Don't think for a second that Microsoft won't use these to lay the hammer on Chrome OS, alongside other tech currently being developed in-house.
Google is repeating the same mistakes Microsoft made when Microsoft tried to pursue other markets: make minor changes or do other stupid things to differentiate itself from the competition. The fact that Google is now doing it just means that Google is no longer the hopeful innovator it once was.
Any other startups happen to have a potentially groundbreaking innovation for the way we use computers? Get your venture capital funding now; you might be able to score a ton of disenfranchised Google engineers. - Rikkochet, on 07/10/2009, -3/+21How were they taking shots at Microsoft? Half of their talking points could just as easily be leveled against any Linux distro or OSX. Six months in, my macbook is already doing stupid things. The few times I've ran Linux full time it also developed quirks over time. An OS can't tune configuration tweaks that you or a third party app made.
- roblange17, on 07/10/2009, -0/+15We get it, Computerworld, anti-Microsoft articles get big hits. Maybe include some substance next time?
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+15So dont.
- CrikeyMike, on 07/10/2009, -4/+18That's a bit of stretch, comparing Microsoft with MySpace. But, I can see Google getting as much share as Apple has very quickly with a system that supports overall really snappy and useful PCs at a great price.
- pathouston22, on 07/10/2009, -8/+21So instead of hearing "This is the year of Linux!" for the past 20 years, it'll be "This is the year of Google Chrome OS!" for the next 20?
- Repeater2000, on 07/10/2009, -2/+14Too bad Windows 7 isn't another Vista, people might actually give a *****.
- jrm125, on 07/10/2009, -0/+12You already have several other options.
Are you too stupid to switch, or is Windows really not as bad as you make it out to be?
Either way, your comment makes you look like a ***** moron. - jrm125, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11When will we see the dawn on the Chrome OS fanboys?
Nothing like adding to the fray. - Laughto, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10Why when any tech company announces anything does every blog and news site on the web says it's going to kill everything else out there?
....oh yeah, hits. - Wilddigi, on 07/10/2009, -5/+14People. Million dollar corporations and small businesses will not switch from Windows to Google or any other OS. It cost money, time and resources to switch. Give it up
- FritoPendejo, on 07/10/2009, -1/+10If you call me Francis, I'll kill you.
- couldbewrong, on 07/10/2009, -6/+15Google sucks! And Microsoft sucks too! And Apple really sucks! And and... Linux sucks! And whatever open source piece of ***** you wanna tout. Two words. It sucks! AOL has always sucked and Prodigy sucked! So, screw them! Compuserve sucks! VAX sucks! Don't even get me started on GRiD & Kaypro - they suck! And Commodore 64? Sucks!! And Coleco's Adam with it's semi-Apple compatibility. SUCKS! Tandy, TI, & Toshiba? Sucks, Sucks, Sucks! And Vic-20, with it's cassette tape storage system and 300 baud off-the-hook modem? Well, it's actually kinda cool - on second thought - it sucks! Guess what?! I took a DeLorean 20 years into the future and found that in the future, Google sucks! And so does Microsoft! And Red Hat! They are all owned by the same company called Qihoo, and they sucked too! And I know what you are going to say in your reply - you are going to say, "You suck," or "Your Mom Sucks" or something along those lines, so I am beating you to the punch. So, here it is, "I suck!" SO DON'T FRACKING SAY IT! Peace out.
- yaosio, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9I never knew Microsoft had the only operating system that is older than the web, thanks Digg!
- shininia, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9I accept.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8He's probably just another ***** who uses a pirated version of Windows and who only expresses his teenage angst by jumping into online Microsoft hate-fests every chance he gets.
- FritoPendejo, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8I take it there's an article in the middle of this page somewhere? I didn't get that far because my eyes are bleeding and I have a headache from all the other unrelated information there.
- toastjam, on 07/10/2009, -3/+10If Google can get more developers creating webapps, vs Windows executables, then that will undermine Microsoft as more people are not locked into Windows to do what they want to do. Even if they don't switch to ChromeOS, it still benefits Google.
It's about more than just the netbook market or ChromeOS -- Google is trying to turn the internet into an ubiquitous platform (one that it makes money from advertising on). - t0ny, on 07/11/2009, -1/+8I've NEVER had to compile a driver to install a printer.
- jdsee, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8You need:
1) Help/Medicine
2) To get off of Digg when we're trying to have a discussion. - couldbewrong, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7Dear, Jdsee, thank you for your kind offer. I would like to take you up on your generous proposition. What kind of medicine do you have? Sincerely, Couldbe wrong. P.S. Thank you for not saying, "You suck."
- redxii, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8I like to keep stuff on my hard drive. Call me crazy.
- sh1tman, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6No.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -4/+10Microsoft used more than business strategy to get to the top. They broke either the spirit or the letter of the law whenever it would suit them and spread FUD at every opportunity.
- Barackalypse, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6The one way Microsoft spits on Google: Operating income
- damack, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6I won't be switching to Chrome OS because I need my Photoshop and even if Chrome OS can do Photoshop by some miracle it's almost certain not to be as good as Windows 7.
On the other hand though the vast majority of computer users represent the facebook/twitter crowd.
If Google were to brand a "Google Internet MiniComputer" or something like that, work with ARM to make it cheap at around 100 dollars and low powered and give it a 5 to 10 second booting time right into the browser with facebook and twitter at hand the vast majority of users would opt for that.
Quality never comes into the equation with your average consumer they just want something cheap that can get the job done. If all they are doing is writing emails and checking facebook status updates they will buy a 100 dollar netbook that gets them straight to the internet as opposed to a more expensive set up.
Can you imagine trying to explain the advantages of Windows 7 over Chrome OS to your average person that only wants to check emails?
This will eat away at what represents the vast majority of the market.
Power users and enterprise markets are a tiny tiny portion of the overall market.
When your average clueless user stops buying desktops and starts buying netbooks the market share for desktops plummets as you can see.
I will never give up my desktop but I am not so naive to think the majority of computer users would if there was a cheaper alternative.
Chrome OS is going to target the bread and butter of the market and if it succeeds those 100 dollars internet netbooks at Walmart will ravage the sales of bigger more expensive computers and more expensive operating systems as people will get the cheapest device they can for their requirements. - sylv3r, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6"i hate having to use windows"
and
"i love windows because its the only good OS"
rigghhhhhttt.. - paradigmx, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5You want the MS market share killed off, but your a MS fanboy????
Hey... I love my local Hockey team, but I sure hope they don't win the Stanely Cup... - cyrix, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6No *****. That's part of his point.
- shallot, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6As if you can write something better that doesn't suck....
- paradigmx, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Simply THE best description of the computer industry I have ever read.
- tomithy, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4You just compared driver support of a recent build of Ubuntu to an 8 year old operating system
- paradigmx, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5I find Linux has better hardware support than windows for the most part, its very rare that I install Ubuntu on a computer and doesn't recognize all but maybe one device. As opposed to the current market leader, Windows XP, which barely recognizes it's on a computer when it's first installed. The average user will not be installing their Operating System anyway, the average user gets their tech friend to do it, and their tech friend would probably know how to install drivers.
- earthforce1, on 07/10/2009, -2/+6I am much more concerned about Microsoft's 90%+ share in the OS market. When the OS market starts looking more like the browser market of today, I will no longer worry. And the world will be a much better place, even for those who choose to run windows. Look at the (lack of) improvements to made to IE between the time Netscape died and Firefox took off. Even a windows fanboi has to admit MS can use a kick in their complacency.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5***** you.
- thedivinelyevil, on 07/10/2009, -2/+6Actually there's more to it than popularity. OSX and Linux are based on a Unix architecture that is by nature more secure than Windows. If the same share of viruses were to be directed at these OSes, Windows would still come off the worse of the three.
- paradigmx, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4Ya, DOS is like 100, didn't the Wright Brothers invent that *****?
- roxgod666, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Chrome has been advertised on youtube for like 10 months now, where is all of its success? Google will be lucky if the OS reaches 5% marketshare in the next 10 years.
- shallot, on 07/10/2009, -7/+10Google Chrome OS is Scare OS....the day you use this is the last day you kept anything for yourself private...obviously the jerk who wrote this is on Google payroll....well, Windows isn't the only OS in market....whatever that Jerk said for windows, just replace Windows with MacOS and the article will go against Apple. True for Ubuntu as well.
Today somebody on Woot had this for Google OS.....
1. Your family photos are accompanied by text ads for skin care and diet plans.
2. Removes all Falun Gong references from your files.
3. Every month, the hard drive is automatically defragged and investigated for anti-trust violations.
4. Invests in, develops, acquires, and abandons your best ideas.
5. Integrated tax preparation software includes "I'm Feeling Lucky" deductible button.
6. Changes your icons daily, forcing you to look up which obscure scientific figure is having a birthday.
7. Spends 20% of its time not doing what you tell it to do.
8. Prevents all evil activity unless it is deemed to be for the good of the shareholders.
9. Masseuse comes by every Monday afternoon.
10. Constant crashes won't bother anybody as long as it's labeled "Beta".
11. "Beta" status won't expire until 2038. - whytlessphysh, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4I agree with your statements to a point. That point being where you tie Chrome OS to existing modes of distribution, playback and usage. Google, hopefully, is not going to position COS in direct competition to Windows - despite what the article tries to suggest. Rather, Chrome is going to be Google's gateway into their distributed cloud applications which, while mostly free at the moment, will eventually comprise their largest revenue stream. By targeting netbooks now, Google is making a smart move.
- gordigor, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3I think you forgot your sarcasm tag.
- saranagati, on 07/10/2009, -4/+6So does having to upgrade from vista to windows 7 or whatever windows upgrade they need to do. A product like this is likely to start off in the new small businesses and migrate up. The luxury of chrome os being free (assumption) is an added benefit. Companies will be able to have their techs set up small testing areas in their free time to try out the new OS at no cost. An added benefit as far as time and resources go is that they won't have to upgrade some software like ms office every time a new version comes out which is a huge time saver.
