- trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+37memorize the charger design, it's becoming popular among police agencies.
- galaxie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32Damn, i think for once they actually made a "new" muscle car that actually looks like a real muscle car. It's lines are clean, simple, and to the point, no extra bling, unnecessary overdone paint job, hood scoops, spoilers, etc.
This is what muscle cars as supposed to look like. Although it looks like it's still a concept car, so those clean smooth lines will probably get some jaggies to cheapen the production costs. - kkeith02, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12At least it makes the local police look a lot cooler, way better than the crown vic's. I hope they updated the design to give it a more classic look
- bearda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Please god, no. It'll just encourage more kids to strap a park bench onto the rear of their mom's FWD Civic.
- Tourney3p0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You know, the first thing I think about when I see someone with something nice is how great it is that they're enjoying life. You however see a nice car and immediately think of the driver's penis. This says a lot more about you than it does about them.
- SteelChicken, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12you = ignorant and judgmental, aka jealous, youre the one with the small dick
- ganjadude4391, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10look at it, and look at what the concept looks like, and what the original challenger looked like.... That my friend is the new challenger
- mrminty, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Ha ha, the only "Challenge" here will be paying for gas.
- Ecl1pse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Ironic. Historically the Charger was the movie bad guy's car of choice.
- Buelldozer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Muscle cars are pure fashion?
It's obvious to me that you've never RIDDEN in one!
There are very, very, few things in life that come close to the experience of an American V8 that's deep into the throttle.
It's a visceral experience. It's one that you see as your car swallows up the white lines faster and faster, one that you feel as you're pressed solidly into the seat and one that you hear as 8 pistons the size of your fist (or larger) howl through the cylinders at an ever increasing rate.
If you can't find anything but "fashion" in an American V8 muscle car then you've obviously never ridden in one. If you have ridden in one and still feel that way then I think it's safe to say that you're just too effeminate to have dangly bits between your legs.
The American muscle car is about big raging motors and rear tires screaming as they try and find enough traction to shoot your ass off the line.
It's okay if it scares you. They scare a lot of people who aren't prepared for more power than a Honda Civic delivers. - CobolNoFun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8a guy on ls2gto.com caught one on the highway yesterday, and got a few from his camera.
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169493
The pictures at the bottom of jalopnik and the video streetfire are basically concept. The duct tape models are test mules. They are much closer to production, then the concept. You can tell they are different by the body line on the side of the car. It was made much more sharp. - jonahan52, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10They should bring back the Superbird/Daytona! It'd scare the ***** out of the rice mobiles with their non-useful rear spoilers well unless they are RWD .. however most aren't!
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Preeeety sure they're going for a slightly different market here. Just guessing.
- ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Actually it probably has one of those multiple displacement engines such that it runs as a 4-cylinder at cruising speed. I think they get around 28mpg highway. Not great but not bad for a V8.
- Nougat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'd hit it.
- MattInChicago, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7The sad thing here that everyone is avoiding is that like the Mustang, Charger, Hemi, soon the Camaro, today's auto designers are obviously clueless! They can't come up with something cool so like Hollywood they've had to reach back into their glory days past and remake them. Worse as car buyers we too long for the old days and suck them up having grown tired of the lame offerings these last 20 years. Sad.
- maxer64, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Yeah.. those new Mustangs are really dead. It's not like I've seen any of those driving around.
...People don't care about gas mileage. They want fast cars that look and sound good. If people did care, everyone would own a Prius instead of SUVs and sports cars. - friedman420, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6because they don't sell them in america
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -3/+6I Heart Muscle Cars
- bearda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Local police aren't going to be using the Challenger. 2-doors tend to be pretty unpopular in law enforcement (for good reason). The Charger is an entirely different story....
- xpankrat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2> .. and rear tires screaming as they try and find enough traction
This sounds pretty lame actually.
I have a European import, V8 and all the trimmings. Unlike "American V8 muscle car" it can go around the corners and the lack of traction is a DARN OPTION. You want to burn tires - you click a button. You want just a smooth quick start - you can do that too. It's a 21st century after all, not utilizing modern technology advancements is pretty dumb. And being proud of that is .. well .. hardly reasonable. - shotgunefx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because I lot of people like retro styling better. While most people might not agree on when the pinnacle of auto styling was, I'm willing to bet the majority of people would think it was sometime between 1950 and 1969. Not to say there weren't some nice designs after that period, but the majority of cars since have been bland.
So now you can have a bit of that without being a gearhead or worrying about sourcing parts. - mt066, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They always do this kind of testing shortly before a car is going to be released. The car cover is because they don't want anyone to get a good look at it just yet. From the shape of it compared to the concept, it is definitely a Challenger. If it were another car, we would have heard about it and seen pictures of a concept by now.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3That looks like a promotional video. This photo was taken "in the wild," so to speak.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I hate generally hate american cars too, but its a design and quality issue, not gas mileage, go ***** yourself hippie.
(BTW, this car looks awesome. and every car company makes gas hogs) - tokyopimp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Why not let people buy what they like. Look I'm all for small cars that get great gas, and I think everyone should use them as their personal to and from work car, but sometimes you want something cool and fast, and that market will never go away. It will certainly get more fuel efficient, but it will never go away.
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, they'll have some type of bumper on the front, because there's no way that concept car would pass the stupid 5 MPH impact tests. The 5 MPH impact test is responsible for single-handedly mangling more beautiful concept ideas than Chris Bangle and the Ford Motors design department combined.
- delong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2People that buy muscle cars, and love muscle cars, don't give a crap about the price of gas. They want to drive a muscle car.
- The_Dude, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7I think it's sweet. Just give me a V-8 muscle car that looks good, has say 450 hp (maybe 500 with an optional supercharger), (but can also idle 4 cylinders while cruising on the highway for improved mileage), weighs as little as possible (2000 lbs ha!), and has 2 puny rear doors to lower insurance premiums....all with a payment of around 500 a month to own it. Or a sticker under 30K. 0-60 times under 5 seconds please also. Okay there you go Detroit. Get crackin'.
- TrailOfDead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Buelldozer
I am 45 and have ridden in several and driven quite a few. My friend built and owned a Super Sport at about 400 HP. So what? Try to drive one on the track.
Yeah they can go like hell in a straight line and burn up tires, but other than that, they are horrible driving experiences. Performance is nothing without handling. - drgruney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's all good and well guys... but this is about the 2008 Challenger... not the 2008 Charger. Very very very different cars.
- csb92376, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2THANK YOU BROTHER!!
It's a big marketing gimmick for people who grew up with these cars who are now in their mid-life crisis years. I'd really like to think that american car companies could do better than that... but not really. I hate to say it, but european cars are kicking butt when it comes to performance. - Thundercat1971, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Wow, way to miss the joke there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger - cougar618, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2highly doubt that. Its possible to build a muscle car that can get near 30 mpg. plus, the people buying muscle cars don't have gas milage as the most important thing on there list.
- neonsox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Wait. Ford makes a fast car? When did this happen?
- Takuro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3To all the people making cracks about fuel efficiency:
There are enough cars catering to the needs of preventing global warming. It's not nearly as bad as it's been in the past. I think we could afford to dedicate at least one car to having a little badass fun on the road from time to time.
The Mustang brought retro back, but the Challenger blows it away to 1970. - TrailOfDead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Exactly the same thing I said above and I get Dugg down and you get Dugg up. Why is this?
- scordle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I just saw one last week on I-65 in Louisville, KY. I would not have realized it was a police cruiser if he had not just pulled someone over and had the light running.
- CobolNoFun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah i never understood that argument about gas millage. People don't buy big v8 rear wheel drive cars for fuel economy, they buy them because the are fun. They make that argument for almost every new American(sort of) v8, camaro, mustang, gto, charger, 300... yet people are still buying these cars. People are still buying the gto at sticker, even though they stopped making them a year ago.
Some people just dont see a difference between a prius and a muscle car... but hey to each their own. - johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1true. Philadelphia has a lot of the Chargers. they started with the highway patrol cars and look kind of Mad Max.
the nearby Philly suburbs have some Chevy Impalas that have VERY subtle lights (no bar on top). i am guessing it's from the factory like that. the lights are hidden in places like the grill, windshield and the mirrors on the doors. those really seem to catch people off guard till they light up those high output LEDs. it looks like a freakin techno dance party. instead of the old spinning lights, they strobe and flash. - punchinelli, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Either way, this isn't the "first shot of a hemi-powered Challenger" as the description implies. It's the first shot of a Challenger that wasn't supposed to be taken. So what? The car looks sooooooo much cooler when the photo was NOT SUPPOSED TO BE TAKEN!! WOWZA!!!
Sensationalism is taking over the Internet....... - ganzhimself, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's right. There's no replacement for displacement.
- raptordrew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2While we'd all love a Cuda too (myself especially, I have a '74), they'd have to revive Plymouth to do so. But any die-hard Mopar enthusiasts are in love with this design, because it is so close to the original look - something the Camaro definitely did not achieve.
- DevinOlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bah, I'm already seeing differences in this from the Concept car shown earlier this year... The concept car had awesome looking retro door handles, and it seemed to have smoother edges by the door... :(
- The_Dude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2That's the Avenger with the heated cup holder you're thinkin of.
- Chakat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2We are. This consumes less fuel than the nissan 350z, which gets 26mpg. This will most likely get about 28, considering other cars that have the same engine.
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, just like the old one.
- bearda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You're right that the description is off, but it's still kind of interesting that it's gotten past the concept phase. Most don't. If they're running a mule of the Challenger it's a few steps closer to production.
- xero9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah not really sure why seeing as it has the word "Dodge" in the title..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Your Momma. I still ***** her though, you gotta take what you can get!
