- monticello, on 10/12/2007, -17/+106Because we're not all stalkers
- Eccohawk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63That's too bad about John and Stephanie...I was rooting for them.
- Zopwx2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+61Ugh its disgusting too much information, it clutters the whole page. Stalker's aside, its just more info that we need, not to mention they don't even have an option to shut it off, or hide certain things.
So now every time I do something, I have to go back to my profile and hide the story. After 500 negative comments, they shut off comments on the fb blog. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40Agreed with your points, but I don't like the new layout. The frontpage is cluttered and most people don't care about every single solitary detail of someone's facebook activity.
Cluttering the screen with useless bits of info like "Joe Smith rejected an invitation" or "Sally Brown left the group 'Myspace is for Emo-Loving Asshats " takes away from the clean layout we all know and love.
Now if they made an RSS feed that didn't interfere with the clean layout, I'd be all for it... - ntroz, on 10/20/2009, -1/+33The Mini-Feed is particularly compromising when you're trying to maintain the illusion of "having a life"
- wheelsee, on 10/12/2007, -25/+57I'm sorry but I dont get why everyone is hating on it...I like it...
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33I agree. They don't have to scrap it, but at least give us the option of either turning off individual updates or the entire feature.
- Sidedish, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Creeeeeeeeepy.
- wheelsee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26you actually can disable individual updates to your wall...for instance if I write on Bob's wall I can go back to my profiles Mini-Feed and click the X and it removes it and boom now no one knows I wrote on Bob's Wall
- steponsnyder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I fail to see how facebook is invading your privacy. They are simply providing innovative ways to deliver information that YOU choose to provide. While the ambitious nature of this new feature is pretty staggering and somewhat terrifying, it's nothing that's outside of your control. Don't like your personal information being provided to the world? Then don't use the service. It's that simple.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -3/+19if you want it private, write them an email
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I don't use facebook any more, but I think thisi s a great feature.
Maybe the level of information is too much, but some is great. I never liked having to go to my recently updated friends list, look at each profile, try to figure out if they added any pictures (a pain if they have a lot), what changed, etc. This is much more useful: Oh, katie added 2 new pictures. Tom dropped a class, Lilly has to work on laborday.
Just what exactly is wrong with having a list of the important info *right there*? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@goostoff
If you are _that_ worried about what you post on facebook potentially harming your future employment, perhaps you shouldn't be posting them in the first place. Also remember, there are ways to make your profiles more private, and since you can't look at someone's profile without being their friends, there is less to worry about still.
I don't see the problem, again, if you're worried about whoever looking at you taking a hit off your bong and not giving you a job, well, you most likely don't deserve the job in the first place. - djpm05, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18seriously. I don't need to know my friend just changed their screen name 2 hours ago, or that john and stephanie broke up 4 minutes ago.
- maks327, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18how long do you think I have to wait before I give steph a call?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@chickenselects:
Then the problem isn't the wall, it's your "friend collecting" behavior. If they're not your *friend*.... take them off your list. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Only half of Myspace's user-base is 15-years old. The other half is 45-year old dudes pretending to be 15-years old, looking to score.
Sorry if I just blew your cover. Better me than Dateline. - uhbeta, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23I actually like it. You can get an update of what's going on w/o having to go through everybody's page
- goostoff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17I like being able to see which of my friends have been active and what has changed about them. Nothing is more ackward than bring up a now ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend.
What scares me the most about this, and why I will be disabling this feature or deleting my account, is that potential employers frequently look at your Facebook pages. This gives a bread crumb trail for them to discover too much about you. Knowing the walls you are posting to and knowing the photo's you are tagging used to be difficult to track, now it's easy. - bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10'absolutely neccessary'?
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12it would be much better if it were made optional and privatizeible.
not everyone wants to see all of that business, and not everyone wants their business to be seen. - mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Same here, it's not that serious, other then really bored people (or stalkers), who will have time to read all that information anyway. Information that I don't see harmful. "PersonX wrote on PersonY wall," big deal. Beside, I'm sure they will allow the option to disable this sooner or later.
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9if you want it private, send them a letter in a sealed envelope
- BillyEveryteen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So has anyone found a way to disable this yet? It's pretty annoying and takes up a lot of space.
- mharriger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you want to make if private, encrypt it.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8To clarify my post:
I had only looked at the main feed, which shows you what all your friends' recent updates have been.
The mini feed on each profile page seems to be where the "too much" info is being shown.
But really people, complaining because someone might see what you wrote on someone else's wall, or photo comment? You realize those things are publicly viewable anyway, right? - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I sort of like the new features. I always found it rather annoying to see that several of my friends had updated their profile's, but I could almost never figure out what it is they updated. Now it's easy with the new feeds.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8that wouldn't stop myspace from being a terrible website. its fifteen year old (and those who still wish they were) user base would still demand glitter font and youtube videos.
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Like I said, old pal from elementary school. Maybe on a rainy day I might like to go see how he's been since I last looked in. I think we've all got friends like that.
- bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I agree. It's a welcome feature to be able to quickly see what all has happened lately with you and your friends. This seems similar to AIM Triton's new "stalker aim" feature to see when people update their profile and away message.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Exactly. I don't mind the features but why can't I just turn off my mini feed?
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I find the News Feed useful, but I would like it more if I could chose what actions are displayed, I don't really care who commented on who's wall or what everyone of my friends status has changed to. The Mini-Feed should also be configurable, I'm not afraid about being stalked, but there are actions that people just have no interest in knowing, like what sections of my profile I've edited. I haven't been using Facebook for long, but the atmosphere seems MUCH more mature than myspace, so I don't think that these features are bad or useless, they just need to be able to be configured, like most everything else on Facebook is.
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All this needs to keep from being creepy or overwhelming is a page with a bunch of check boxes to control how much information about you is avaliable to others and what kinds of events you want to be notified about. I don't want to know when my old friend from elementary school joins the group "I like Cereal", but it would be cool to have a brief on some stuff.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Maybe i'm a hypocrite, but I kinda like the new feature for being able to see what has changed about my friends... i just don't want them to be able to do the same with me...
- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And I do understand and completely agree with the notion that it's displaying too much information that each user should have control over. I really don't like the idea that anyone can see everything I'm doing in one place like that.
- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Running fine for me.
- thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And who says I want to see if an my ex gets a new boyfriend. I just don't want to know about that, but where can I turn this off?
- duruq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I dont see a really big problem with this. If you are doing stuff on the facebook you are afraid that other people can see, then you have issues. Facebook is all about socializing (and stalking for that matter) so it really is not that big of a deal.
- paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Great. Now it's MySpaces turn.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6TMI on a social netowkring site sure is something to complain about.
I think it organizes your data quite well. This is all stuff you could find on other pages, it is just now on ONE page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@goostoff
I see your point now, I read your comment as something about YOUR profile, not those of others. Although, I still have to say you are relatively safe. Even if you post to Joe Racists wall, if they're not Joe Racists friend, they can't read what you wrote (or what they have in their profile). I highly doubt the HR manager at wherever you are applying to is friends with Joe Racist or any of the other 300 friends you have. - seinman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If you don't like this feature, write to facebook. info@facebook.com is the address to use.
I personally think it's a neat feature, but it's implemented in an obnoxious way. In addition, it should probably have an opt-out feature for those who value their privacy. I wrote to facebook and told THEM that, instead of bitching about it on some forum. That way they know how their users feel. I suggest you all do the same. - phatalbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree, it's kind of cool, and really the whole point of facebook was to keep updated on your friends anways. BUT, there NEEDS to be a way to disable it/choose which events/categories to display.
- Jon855, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Facebook is being dugg or something... I've logged in and still haven't seen my homepage for over 5 mins... Who would have thunk of it.
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5To be fair, that new arrow-collapse thing for sections of profile does counter a little bit of the mess. Still messy, though- needs to be customizable.
- zakool21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The new feature could definitely be streamlined. The reason I use Facebook over Myspace is because of its sheer simplicity, and they're taking it away now.... I don't see it is an invasion of privacy, just maybe an easier way to access information on people's pages. If you have information up that's too private, then TAKE IT DOWN!!
- monticello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To the people saying "bitch where it matters"
the blog post linked in the title of this entry USED to have a comments section. It had over 500 negative replies within 30 minutes (at 4am) and was erased. - koreth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The little triangle next to each section will collapse it so it doesn't take up space any more. You can collapse just about everything on the profile page now, not just the feed stuff.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The cool thing about seeing when people join groups is that you may have similar interests and didn't know it. Maybe you do like cereal, and you wouldn't have known about the "I like cereal" group without your friend having joined, and your being able to see it.
- RavenBladeX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's been like that for a long time now.
