Digg feature request: Private message other Digg users. Digg if you agree.
calvinandhops.com — Ever want to respond to a Digg user personally, without the reply to button? Why not just a "send message" to the Digg user. So, if you agree, DIGG. Link goes to some dude's photoblog.
- 334 diggs
- digg it
- ArsenicAndLace, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Dugg only because I want to see a digg employees response to this. I actually think this would ruin digg, it would be full of spam "Digg my story, PLEASE!?"
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I don't think so. Perhaps, instead of the unnecessary flamewars, people could respond to each other and bring it 'offline' instead of the quips needed.
Plus, if we are to be a community, some times we'd like to communicate on a level that isn't public. - xose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Nice idea but, as said, could turn into spam. Imagine a legion of bots registering accounts to spam c1alis and vi@gra to every Digg user.
Maybe for common friends only. That would be nice. Then it could be extended or not. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"Link goes to some dude's photoblog."
Unnecessary. This is Digg, and therefore, that is implied. - MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure that Digg's staff has already thought about this. But as you mentioned, there are a lot of downsides to it (spam for example) but it would be really nice to have some sort of feature around somewhere.
Digg + - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I can only imagine the terror that would become of Digg if this were to be implemented.
The last thing I want in my "digg-box" are personal flames in disagreement with something I said. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'd like to be able to see the average rating of a person's comments on their profile.
- calcnerd256, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd like to see the precedent set for digging to vote up new features
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I don't think so. Perhaps, instead of the unnecessary flamewars, people could respond to each other and bring it 'offline' instead of the quips needed."
Maybe you could use email, thats what the email address field in your profile is for.
"Plus, if we are to be a community, some times we'd like to communicate on a level that isn't public."
email? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well of course the Digg team would want to give us every cool feature possible.. but you can't really expect them to focus on this minor convenience rather than the other endless projects they're working on. They don't have a huge team.. I think they spend most of the time just improving the digg algorithm. I'm sure they agree that private messaging would be cool, but is it worth the time, effort, and server load .. and how many diggers would actually use it?
It's not as easy as just wanting it. - liquidrums, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Not to mention the bandwidth & disk space all those messages would take up.
- cdahlkvist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ugh...welcome to mylamespace.com
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I don't think so. Perhaps, instead of the unnecessary flamewars, people could respond to each other and bring it 'offline' instead of the quips needed.
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Think about how annoying it would be when 200 people try to message you at once to tell you you are a noob. Digg lags enough as is at times. I wouldn't frequent the site as often.
It may be a good feature for friends you authorize to contact you but still it could get out of hand. Another option would be to allow maybe 2 or 3 people to contact an individual user at any given time. The rest would get a "busy" symbol notifying them that the IM threshold for that particular user is currently maxed out.- crash013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why does it have to be real time? It could be like any other forum where you have an inbox with all the messages you recieved.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I disagree Zig. I think people would really only take out the time to PM if they had something they REALLY wanted to say to this person. You'd have to be some kind of jackass to get 200 people to respond negatively to you.
PM systems work well for other forum sites, so why shouldn't digg have it? I've never gotten spam in my gamespot forum account. It's not as though they can't implement the same spam countermeasures they have been thus far. I don't know about you, but I have seen very little in the way of real spam on these comment sections.
- da5idblacksun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Excellent question and tough to answer. I'm sure some middle ground solution would work.
- pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's pretty black and white. Either we can PM other users or we can't.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How about you can send messages but you can't read them...that would be half-way.
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just put some limit on the number you can send a day, like 5. This would stop spam. Of course users would have to be able to opt out of receiving PMs if they want, just like on any forum.
- bitrich, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7voted lame
- whoreman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I agree I dont want anyone sending me any messages!
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1as did I
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1same here
- ratsoid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1oi! same did I lad!
- ForrestGump, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3another cool feature is user rating. you can only give a thumbs up and not mod a person down
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That's a bit reminiscent of Karma on /., which I don't really see to be such a great thing. People get ego's, people with low Karma leave, etc.
The thumbs up and down on a single post can usually be directly related to the quality of the poster, which is why this post will stay firmly on +1. :) - ForrestGump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lol yeah i guess your right
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That's a bit reminiscent of Karma on /., which I don't really see to be such a great thing. People get ego's, people with low Karma leave, etc.
- kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17LAME. what is this, myspace?
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh I can just imagine it now...
LOL NICE PHOTOS PS DIGG MY STORIES AND COMMENT MY PIX!!
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh I can just imagine it now...
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I believe this would be good, but the only person that could msg me, should be people that I have added to MY friends list.
- fakturist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm only going to comment (and only would publicly anyway) because I'm not sure I'd want that. Other "forums" and what-not that allow peer to peer communication just get spammed.. and half the time I don't even feel like talking to those other losers (present company excluded of course).
- jaypee68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like this idea, but I agree with the spam abuse. what about just being able to msg people in a friends list? So if you dugg a story, you could msg your boy John and tell him to check this story out.
- jjb123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wierd, I just sent the digg people a message about this two days ago. I guess a lot of people agree.
- Kajin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2digg would not be better with PMs...it would be filled with people begging you to digg their stories...the way I see it..it serves no use..there is no reason digg users need to PM each other. The comment system is enough!
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Do you like me?
Digg if you agree. - EllisAshbrook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3not just lame...stupid!
Everything is in the open for a reason...so all can participate! - boneill428, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I think this would truely create a "digg community". I have been on digg for a year and a half and I haven't made one friend off of this site. I don't feel like there is a community here. If there was a private messaging system I think it would create a more community feel to digg.
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Agreed.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Personaily: I see digg as more of a society than a community that is to say it's social more than communal.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think that if you would be able to message people that you are mutual friends with this could be a pretty spam-free and useful system. An unregulated system that allows you to message everybody could and would get out of hand, but I do think that messaging between friends would be a welcome addition
- obeattie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am going to Digg this - because I like the feature. I do think though, that another feature to incorporate is the ability to request features in a separate area, so users can digg them.
Forcing people to digg what is in all reality spam seems wrong - r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It'd also be cool if you could click a "mark all as read" button on an article comment page - then if you visit it later, and there are new comments, they appear in a different color or something.
- obeattie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Digg - please give us a separate system for feature requests. I don't want to have to be forced to digg off-topic stories. But we have to, it seems.
UPDATE : I thought Digg had lost my above comment. Wouldn't have doule commented otherwise! - boneill428, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This got buried fast
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How do we know if the 'yes' votes outnumber the 'no' votes?
I'd rather be able to reply to replies.
Oh, and marked innaccurate. - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO SPAM
I sure as hell don't want to hear personally from you people and I'm sure it's mutual. - matija, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2how about a more robust commenting system instead? (yeah maybe PMing too..)
- greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"If you have something to say, you can come up in front of the class so we all can hear it."
-Ms. Elfers
7th grade, Kyle Middle School - sammyc53, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PLEASE NO......... Buried story.
- Klitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NO NO NO...I am completely opposed to this idea...This is not the type of service that needs or should have a private communication button.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wouldn't it make sense to say... have the comments section not suck first? For Christ sake it's 2006 Slashdot has been using actual threaded comments since 1997 and this "wonderful " web 2.0 site can't figure it out?
Buried just because there are MUCH better things that need to be fixed first. - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do not approve of this. Digg has a ***** of members; it would suck, IMO, to get a bunch of private messages that are advertisements.
Unless maybe I just gave THEM an idea. - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt Kevin wants to receive half a million IM's a week from Digg fanboys.
Hell, I'm a fanboy and even I can admit that!- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it's probably just the same as his public email address/myspace/whatever, don't think that an issue, he could just not read them..
That said: I'm still opposed to the idea.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it's probably just the same as his public email address/myspace/whatever, don't think that an issue, he could just not read them..
- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would Digg want to re-invent the wheel on an building their own IM platform? Here's a suggestion:
Allow people to post one or more IM id's on their profile page (Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk, etc.). Totally optional. The profile page could check to see if you're online, offline, etc. If someone needs to insult you and call you a noob they just contact you on your existing IM id.- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just checked and you can already specify your IM ID on your profile page. Why are we even talking about this? Let's bury this story.
- wirelesshnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe if you where able to put an IM name or email associated with your digg account that people could contact you. That way it would be your choice. Why make a message system for digg when friends who want to communicate could do it on lines they are already using like IM and Email.
Personally I would like to see system for comments ranking system. - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wanted to submit a link to some dude's photoblog that I found interesting, and I couldn't because it said it was a "duplicate" of this topic. What's up with that?
- ajskhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DID Y'ALL SEE HOW FAST THIS WENT OFF OF THE FRONT PAGE
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Put your IM contact info in your profile if you want people to be able to contact you privately.
- GhengisKhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No digg. Then it becomes just another discusstion forum. If you want to PM someone use your IM accounts.
- cheekybastard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Bury it. Lame. Anyone who needs the internet to make friends, please go to MySpace.
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still want the digg.com email address as they kind of discussed on a diggnation show... but then again that would be just like a pm cause it would most likely be our user name@digg.com
- NikZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't get why everyone thinks it'll be a spam fest. If PM'ing is limited to mutual friends only, then blocking unwanted spam would be pretty simple - you'd just un-friend the culprit.
Private Messaging in public forums is a stock feature, has been for years, and they usually always offer an "allow others to PM you" toggle so that you can just turn it off if it's not your thing. As a member and moderator of many forums over many years, I've *never* received spam thru a PM.
I really don't think implementing the feature would harm Digg at all, and I really don't see what the big deal is if the feature is optional anyway.
That all said, I personally couldn't care less myself - just throwing some perspective out their.
As for adding your IM or email to your profile... that's just ridiculous, *that's* a certain hole for spam. - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long as I can disable the inbox, I wouldn't mind.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How am I supposed to pick up chicks without a --- oh wait. Never mind.
- perkonis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it were limited to opt-in and some sort of white list, I think this might be OK. Otherwise I get enough spam.
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they should set something up with the Meebo and have a Meebo Me widget for each digg user. Instead of digg users showing up as anonymous, the digg user profile name would show up. Maybe have an option to choose if you want to talk to just your friends or any other digg user.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this would be a great feature as long as you have the abillity to turn it off. Or possibly set it so you can only recieve messages from mutual friends, or people on your friends list.
- Trumpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mark as lame if you disagree...
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just make it like the last.fm shoutbox, and then I think it could work on a digg messageing system.
Digg me up if you agree. - ravencin, on 12/26/2007, -0/+0i hope this doesn't matter to fotolog http://fotologya.com
