Digg Needs a Picture Section
flickr.com — Lately there have been a good deal of stories reaching the front page that are nothing but pictures (usually ones sported as funny and/or witty). How many other people think pictures deserve their own section, as not to clog up the topics for news articles. Digg this story if you agree.
- 9454 diggs
- digg it
- Cyre, on 10/12/2007, -487/+16And how is digging this story going to change anything? It won't. Buried as LAME!
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -10/+253The idea is you digg it, gets on the front page, more people see it, more people digg it, it gets more attention drawn to it. More people will email the Digg staff about it, the snowball gets bigger and we try to reach the goal.
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+84@Cyre
And how is not voicing your opinion going to change anything! I agree with Cyberpope. This is sometimes how the ball gets rolling. If it explodes in the blogosphere, maybe we will eventually see some results. - Software2, on 10/12/2007, -47/+113Actually, if anything, videos should be put back together with the rest of the site.
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -23/+82@software2:
I completely agree! I really dont like having to click to go videos... Just have them in the same page, and, if necessary, offer the separate pages as an option. - anotherjeff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Diggers decide what gets on the front page and we should be able to decide if digg needs a picture section or not.
- naughtymonkey69, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25You should have the option to include videos (and if they seperate; pictures) into the normal news feed...as lazy as it sounds, its sucks having to click on the videos tab at the top (alot of times i forget its even there). I miss the way it was and I would like everything in just one steady stream of news, so I dont have to navigate around that much. One extra click can easily add up over the many hours I spend on digg.
- Dawnspire, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4Have you guys tried reading the comments in the video section? Its bad enough over here, dont bring that crap back!
Its getting as bad as youtube comments in there - stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24@Software2: Definitely. It doesn't need to be split up any more than it currently is, i would rather the option of everything all being on one page.
If its going to be separated, at least give the option to view all content in one section. - MuteMathSSR, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8Cyre - Appears that you've been buried as "lame"
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18it'll turn into /b/ in a minute.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+49
Diggers decide what gets on the front page and we should be able to decide if digg needs a picture section or not.
I want a pic section too, so we can do Fark-like stuff. But that would mean the pic section would have to support embedded pics.
Digg for some reason doesn't want to improve the comment system to support any kind of formatting or embedding of thumbnails. I guess it would be too easy to abuse? Or maybe it would kill Digg's servers?
Well, I hope something is done soon. Still waiting for that quote support...

It's also ironic that for a tech site, there's no code support either!

Like I said, if it's a matter of bandwidth, that's ok, but otherwise, Digg could really use some of this stuff. - opensourcemaven, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3buried as hot seks, flickr picture of Windows. where's that mac sauce?
actually, i think it might blend. unburied. - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Digg needs a spam section.
- keiths, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yea it's a good idea but digg will never do it now that we requested it.
- rysolag, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2@macmcrae
why would they want spam on their site? - Himself, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@Cyre's dissenters
not going to happen until it makes it into a kev video
@naughtymonkey69
convert your image into a video... one identical frame after another ;) - naio21, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Obiwan, STFU.
- jinglee, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3There was one website I found just filling this void...
http://photobump.net/
PS: That website is not mine..Don't digg me down and spoil my reputation.. - Himself, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1http://digg.com/videos/educational/How_To_Digg_An_Image_As_A_Video_Take_2
hehe - geonet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Digg needs a section about Digg.
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5The one thing I think we can all agree on, is that something needs to be changed, whether it be pictures to their own section/topic, or a unified media section/topic, or some other idea.
- Cyre, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Hehehe, that's the most I've EVER been dugg down! Too funny!
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think my story was the first about the picture section (woot)
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/There_should_be_a_Photo_Section_on_digg!
- jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -14/+62Sounds like a good idea, but it actually makes Digg more complex than it needs to be.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61I felt the same way when miniature golf course designers added those windmills with blades that now *rotated*. Completely messed up the course vibe. The game was never the same.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@ jcs goog
Ah damn I meant to digg you up but accidentally hit the thumbs down (which also makes me want a reverse digg button that only lets you do it once.) The idea seems good but there does not seem to be nearly enough photos to warrant its own entire section like Videos or News. What instead would be a subtopic like Playable Web games. It would be simple and effective. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4But the topics will get clogged! CLOGGED I say! I shouldn't have to look at pictures on MY digg!
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Digg doesn't need more retarded section.
- papavb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37how about a section called 'media' where vids and pics are posted, we definitely don't need a new section at the top as jcs_goog said.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@mcatrage
"pictures are become" ??
there should be an Engrish subsection of images (or media)
AYB - DrStephanHeimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@firehydra2k
"Digg doesn't need more retarded section"
your comment should be in the more retarted section - tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i vote for digg pics. but having sai dtaht i think porn should be zpped/deleted asap. i think one pic per story is fine nothing more.
- bobabadabouskie, on 10/12/2007, -22/+9if you want a pics goto collegehumor.com, not digg
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I do agree with you, that digg should be for news, however every now and then a tech related humour picture might be uploaded to the interconnected network of networks than only the Digg crowd would find funny. Thus a small picture section might be useful. Then again I doubt Collegehumour.com would have these pictures http://digg.com/design/HDR_Images_Of_Chernobyl
- bobabadabouskie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19agreed, but pics related to news, tech, gaming, sports...can go in their respective catagories.
- spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It will just change Digg totally. there are dedicated websites for such things like http://www.slrresource.com/ for photography only.
- dmitriyvoz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I liked your article. The author has like a problematics of the chosen theme which shows all sense of given article.
Can look my sites which open the mentioned problems in Russian: http://www.rolid.net http://www.se-ua.com
- androothebear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I completely agree.
- slimscane, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34"Digg this story if you agree"
So, if I disagree should I bury it?- maardvark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Isn't that the point?
- ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah - pictures with the story would be nice.. specially with the posts that are just one pictures.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think it needs a picture section, just a "very short video without sound" section.
The HDR photo section can be labeled "New Xbox 360 screenshots"- polo3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like it... a single frame video section.
- soviyet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Perhaps "Videos" should be made into "Videos and Photos". The videos section is hardly "news", as it is mostly just funny videos. The thing is, there isn't a section for funny pictures, but it doesn't make sense to drop picture links into videos.
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Maybe wrap it all under an "Entertainment Section". Not to say news isn't entertaining, but you get my point.
- oifish, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Off topic...but what Firefox skin is that..I like...
- PolarPyro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/72/
- ki85squared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I thought it was god-awful. I've spent too much time going through the themes looking for a simple, straightforward theme with smaller, sleeker buttons. But no. Most of the themes have gigantic, "Hey, click me!" buttons that look _terrible_. I used to use Modern Pinball [http://mozilla-themes.schellen.net/firefox.html] before I upgraded to 2.0. Now I'm using azureFox [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3761/] because, to my disappointment, Modern Pinball isn't supported in 2.0. I just can't understand how anyone could use a theme that draws attention away from the web page content with browser buttons that explode off the screen...
- mattman12345, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8Kevin Rose if your listening we want a picture section
- ppatalano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow this got carried over from the funniest signs digg just a couple of hours ago, that's really interesting
- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I don't think it needs a whole big section like news, video, podcast, but maybe a small section in news under entertainment or something. I like everything being contained within news really.
- papavb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1*****' a, I've been thinking about this for a while but never knew how to submit it.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1yes it does
- truegodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Too many sections could be too confusing. However, I like the idea of a picture section. How about we combine the Video section with the picture section, add audio and call it the multimedia section or some such thing?
- SanDiegoEditor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21000 words would agree with you.
- cheeseron, on 10/12/2007, -23/+13Digg needs a porn section.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23No it doesn't.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I thought that was what the rest of the internet was for?
- cheeseron, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Couldn't the same be said for news, pictures, and videos?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17
Digg needs a porn section.
And a Bittorrent section.
How about a cooking section? - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Digg needs a spam section!
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If people liked the picture, and it got dugg, it would still end up on front page anyway, right? So what difference? Or are your hopes that if you throw them in an obscure section of the site people wont be as likely to see it? I don't quite follow the complicating of digg..
- fireblade278, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Of course, like everything else, making a new section will have its ups and downs.
i know i like my news quick and easy, but occasionally i would rather have it organized. sometimes i would like to see videos separated, somtimes i think its just a waste of time.
What i think is that you should be able to choose yourself, with some account configurations, to see videos on the front page, pictures, or just bush sending more men to Iraq. It would be all alot better if we had the choice on our accounts to make videos appear on the same or separate page.- DanMcScience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good ideas. I know this is an open (ie free) site, but, just thinking out loud, that would be great to be able to customize what you see. Simple and elegant and therein lies the genius.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have no idea how to categorize an image most of the time. As much as I agree with the notion, I think the post sucks as it isn't an article or event or object of any means. Write an article explaining and proving he solution and I'll digg it.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5more like "nothing but crap"
i wish for a digg picture section, so i can block it. - radoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't think we need a new section, but thumbnails of the photo's on the front page would be a nice addition and maybe they could have a play button like on the videos that just darkens the background and has the picture pop up..
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6what an ugly firefox skin
- matt646, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wouldn't you want to follow suit with
http://digg.com/news ,
http://digg.com/videos , and
http://digg.com/podcasts
How about... (Warning: this one is definitely going to be a shocker to most of you, for the weak stomached, please do not read below this line!!!!!)

- dataloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nah...pictures are usually _about_ something, right. That something should fit into a category.
Just my $0.02.
And yes, I don't like a "podcasts" and "video" sections for the same reason. - elx39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What do you guys think about a poll system?
Do you think it would make Digg too much into just a regular forum then?
Personally, I think it would be a great feature for Digg, allowing users to not only Digg the stories but give their opinion whether or not they agree with the content- IgnatiusJReilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like that idea. Because right now, I think the thumbs up/down thing is too much about whether or not the user agrees with content therein, not whether or not content adds or detracts from the discussion. If we clearly set a boundary between agreeing with content and perpetuating good discussion, it would help.

- flap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If the pictures have an interesting story then the story is usually included. This makes it an "article". We have been doing this article thing for a while on digg.
It works well. - ArkAngel06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was just thinking about this the other day. It would be nice.
- amormachine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4can i suggest we get a blog section? seriously, there's a lot of people who spam the comment section, but there are also some pretty damn smart/interesting digg users. we need a section where people can submit their stuff and the hive mind/digg voting system/democracy work its magic.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The way you describe digg, it is like we are Borg.
You will be assimilated! - idigital, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@waterdragon : Try taking an opposing opinion to some articles, UFO fruitology for instance. Resistance is futile.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1^^
"Resistance is futile" was first used by the Master in Doctor Who episode: The Deadly Assassin
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The way you describe digg, it is like we are Borg.
- idigital, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0We'll need a UFO section and a Digg section as well at this rate.
- blynder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@ flap
I totally agree and you bring up a good point almost every article has a picture what about them? - bootle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Digg needs a meta section, for stories about digg.
More importantly, digg needs to allow stories to be filed under multiple categories. For example, a funny picture of an apple computer could be filed under pictures and apple (and design and who knows). I could see that making things worse though. Maybe have the submitter rank them in order of categorical relevance?- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wouldn't tags be too confusing for the average digger? ... stick to the up/down voting system stolen from stumbleupon... never you mind what's going on at wordpress or userscripts... innovation is bad
- plavchan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Change Videos -> Multimedia to emcompass audio, video and pictures. No need for separate categories...
these should be included on the front page, but perhaps with a way to distinguish or hide non-text news....
You know... kind of like how /. has categories for topics... perish the thought. It saves time on reading through the titles... - michaelbeckham, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I would call it "photos" not "pictures" though. Other than that good idea.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would also like to see a separate digg section for those stories that have only one brief paragraph, or just a few sentences.
- rpjrugby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would love to see an option when submitting to digg to include an imbedded poll w/ your article's description. Maybe like to the right of the desc. or just above the comments. This thread is a perfect example. It would remove the ambiguity from "digging" a petition-type thread and automatically being assumed as supporting it's cause. A quick glance at a poll/bar graph would allow anyone to see what others feel towards the issue without having to find all of their comments.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2so.. like.. radio buttons instead of red/green buttons?
- Riluske, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, the idea that comes to mind is 4chan's random section. Lots of porn and lots of disgusting stuff. As a digg user, I don't really want it here
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, that's probably what it would degenerate into.
- sickswaystop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1although I think its a great idea...
how can digg manage the pictures when they are submitted as galleries?
people would need to start submitting all pictures as straight IMG URLzzz
and the galleries or photos in blogs would get ignored.
is it worth the hassle?? - JasonDelta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why not just a dedicated mirror site like people have suggested before? Instead of linking directly to the article or webpage, just link it to a mirror of the page with sufficient stability to withstand digg. The way I see it, that helps the webpage owner not get completely destroyed after getting digged, and the digg users don't have to peruse through cache mirror sites to find a copy. Everybody wins!
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I thought of this right as I saw the "HDR Battleship Iceland" story. The front page is getting flooded because honestly, pictures can be pretty cool.
- krakround, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Because we all need to see more cat pictures saying "im in ur compter steeln ur internets"
- phlogiston99, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3We need a category for "amazing HDR shot of _______ skyline" pictures. AMAZING!
- Alisic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HA HA! :D
so true
- Alisic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HA HA! :D
- thekurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digg doesn't necessarily need a picture section, just an interface like the one they have for the videos where you don't need to navigate away from the site to view the picture(s). A nice lightbox (http://www.doknowevil.net/litebox/) type interface. That way users can view the picture(s), laugh or say "that's cool" and move on.
Deposit: $0.02 - trascendedlogic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah, definitely add an images category :)
- kevie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Atleast a button for it i hate having to do searches just to look at photos......if theres a video tab then there should be a photo sub-section.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'd rather have a Microsoft section first.
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's called 4chan.org
- geekmaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i was just thinking about this the other day. you read my mind. there's just as much pictures on the web as videos.
