Digg Needs This Feature for Duplicate Stories
farm4.static.flickr.com — Ok ok .... I was visiting some other social networking sites and discovered this really cool new feature at MIXX. We need this feature at Digg or something like it.
- 3805 diggs

- kevyn, on 02/28/2008, -8/+2theres actually a button to press which means you don't have to tell us this
- tehroflmaoer, on 02/28/2008, -2/+45Quadrupled?
- fkr3, on 02/28/2008, -2/+34You know the top users and the gizmodo/engadget/etc whores will just flag everything as an update or different perspective, even if the domain name constitutes most of the new material.
- ptFoe, on 02/28/2008, -0/+29by the time they implement it will be 2010
- dbr_onix, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2Well, they could start by making the "Possible duplicates" search less ferking useless.. Might be done this year!...
- linkin2, on 02/28/2008, -2/+68Digg needs a brand new fanbase. Current one is mentally damaged.
- scuba7183, on 02/28/2008, -20/+4your part of the fanbase

- xadhominemx, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2The funniest part is that I was gonna make fun of scube7183 for messing up.
- lintmonkey, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8Gosh, they can't even comment right.
- xptoast, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Naw, if we were mentally damaged we would be good at flirting. Didn't you read the article on flirting yet?
- scuba7183, on 02/28/2008, -20/+4your part of the fanbase
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4dugg, favorite, uhmm friended?
- GoatBn, on 02/28/2008, -0/+30I think the "Update" one would be the best....look familiar?:
"FIDEL CASTRO DEAD": 10,000 diggs
"Nevermind, Fidel Castro not really dead": 1,500 diggs - beaunewcomb, on 02/28/2008, -1/+5eighty-firstedidid...did
- merreborn, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8While you're at it, let us submit and vote on alternate titles and summaries.
Then we can fix typos in titles, and replace lame "title says it all" summaries when lame submitters get their stuff front paged.- Bhima, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7That and join dupes into one submission and bring all the comments together under one heading
- Asianwaste, on 02/28/2008, -1/+6Hate to sound cynical but even if we had layers upon layers of scrutiny, people will still submit their dupes and lie through their teeth when clicking through them.
- lintmonkey, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7Yeah, this needs a "Just Felt Like Submitting Again to Stroke My Ego" option.
- xptoast, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1What does ego feel like when you stroke it?
- lintmonkey, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7Yeah, this needs a "Just Felt Like Submitting Again to Stroke My Ego" option.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Seconded, as well. Though I'd add one more button that says "Same story, same site, slightly different URL" which makes the user's computer explode.
- starkes, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1YES !
- Thorlord, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1There should be one more button
"Exactly the Same story"
which closes your browser if pressed.

- edwartica, on 02/28/2008, -3/+3Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip that started on this tropic port aboard this tiny ship.
- Nitesmoke, on 02/28/2008, -3/+3You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and then you have...the facts of life....
- centran, on 02/28/2008, -3/+5how is that a combo breaker? That is how the song goes. The next line of the Captain is "ready?" and then everyone sings "sponge bob square pants, sponge bob square pants, sponge bob square pants!" and the captain laughs at the end. So as I was the one that started this; I will end it.
Ha Ha Ha!!! - Mike89, on 02/28/2008, -1/+9Sorry we don't all know the spongebob theme song as well as you centran. Please, teach us ;)
- mrynit, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5@centran a/s/l, really how do you know so much about kids shows?
- SteveMax, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I feel like an old geezer for having never, ever watched this.
- centran, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I know know so much about kids show because I have younger cousins I babysit sometimes and I also have stoner friends(that is also kind of like babysitting).
- Nitesmoke, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Sure you do.
- mrynit, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1@centran do you watch Lazytown ;)
- centran, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2I can't watch Lazytown after seeing all the ytmnd's. I immediately start laughing my ass off. Then I stop and watch it for 10 seconds. Then I think... I am a creepy old man and change the channel.
- kb9vgr, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1...... then they threw it out the window the window the second story window high low low high just threw it out the window
- centran, on 02/28/2008, -3/+35Oh! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

- dvsbastard, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8It is faster... My "Oh noes! I broke your commentz" javascript alerts pop up twice as fast... and twice as often!
- superal1394, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8Haha, or Firefox hangs for a minute, with 1 CPU core at 100% as it makes sense of all 700 comments.
On another note, why isn't Firefox multithreaded?
- superal1394, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8Haha, or Firefox hangs for a minute, with 1 CPU core at 100% as it makes sense of all 700 comments.

- Awspire, on 02/28/2008, -5/+7Ya right, just in time for the Presidential election. Then if Obama gets the nomination his followers could dominate the front with their spam, pretty much like they do now, but with a different perspective.
- crweaks23, on 02/28/2008, -3/+9remove politics from front page preferences and stop your damn whining
- Awspire, on 02/28/2008, -3/+2I'm not crippling a service I enjoy to just avoid spamming zealots, and I'm not just referring to the excessive Obama news. The spammers that abuse this site don't need more options to ***** it up.
- crweaks23, on 02/28/2008, -3/+9remove politics from front page preferences and stop your damn whining
- slightlyoffbeat, on 02/28/2008, -1/+5this is truly spoken by someone who doesn't understand how creating a big site with a large user-base works. You have to create it, QA it, test, re-test, and be very thorough about everything. Even if its a small change. Plus you can't just put it in, you think where its going to be implemented, and how its going to interact with the rest of the site. People..every change (done correctly) takes time.
- FlagrantDrugUse, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2"Plus you can't just put it in"
You're right, digg needs some astroglide first. - Gizza, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2"QA it, test, re-test"
How do you explain this comment system then?
- FlagrantDrugUse, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2"Plus you can't just put it in"
- DeathRay2K, on 02/28/2008, -7/+2Like this!

- t2t2, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Hey, he wanted to be obvious...
- stackered, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2uuiU
- frazw, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1How could it be quick? You'd need some sort of pattern recognition to match stories from different sites either by title (unless by chance it is exactly the same) or by content.
- Mike89, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1It's already done
- jakobahman, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Considering how advanced the "pics"-section was, and how long time that took.... I'll guess it would be ready in... hmm.. 2014?
- dralezero, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1A simple feature always has more complexity to it than it seems depending on the structure of the code. Such as a client once told me he thought all I did was add a new field to the database but actually he asks for a complete redo of a whole section which required one new field.
- Four20, on 02/28/2008, -1/+60don't hold your breath
- dotlizard, on 02/28/2008, -2/+60that is purely awesome. you'd get rid of all the people hollering "dupe" if you submit a related or updated story -- and build a list of related stories for someone wanting to get more information. and, if digg had a nice user forum like mixx, we could suggest that to them. heck, if someone made a blog post about suggestions for mixx, someone from mixx would show up and respond to it, 'cause they watch for stuff like that. i'm just sayin'.
- phunlee, on 02/28/2008, -1/+14If you get idiots to stop yelling 'dupe!' permanently, I'll make the moon disappear.
- superal1394, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4Happens once a month my friend.
- RobotChicken1, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Thanks for explaining the joke for me!

- phunlee, on 02/28/2008, -1/+14If you get idiots to stop yelling 'dupe!' permanently, I'll make the moon disappear.
- bamafun, on 02/28/2008, -5/+101I just duped someone today by total accident - when i went back to check on my submission I saw their was one ahead of me by 6 min. I notified the original submitter of my error and posted a link to his story in mine but it sure would be nice if we had buttons like shown in this picture so this wouldn't happen so much or at all.
- dotlizard, on 02/28/2008, -1/+34there's been quite a lot of accidental duplication lately -- i've done it myself even being scrupulously careful not to. the dup detector here is almost as bad as the search. not that i'm complaining. oh wait, i am complaining :)
- bamafun, on 02/28/2008, -1/+11I wasn't the only one who duped the poor guy - there was like 7 after me? Something is seriously wrong if that many can get by the system!
- aelias, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1Better still would be to combine the links behind the scenes, so that all of the "same page, different link" submissions get to share the server load. You wouldn't get quite as much "hey, did you see that girl in the ad?" banter in the comments, but you also wouldn't see as much digg effect either. I don't have the time to digg six things a minute like some people, and when I scan the front page, full of juicy, interesting time-wasters, I'd love for some of them to work.
- escortez, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1He speaks the truth! http://digg.com/baseball/Baseball_and_Steroids_It_ ...
- dotlizard, on 02/28/2008, -1/+34there's been quite a lot of accidental duplication lately -- i've done it myself even being scrupulously careful not to. the dup detector here is almost as bad as the search. not that i'm complaining. oh wait, i am complaining :)
- DaLukeMan, on 02/28/2008, -7/+9eh i guess
- twertyto, on 02/28/2008, -5/+130That won't do anything. People mainly submit duplicates because they think Digg is a popularity contest.
If a duplicate story happens to fit any of those categories then you can just explain that in the story description.- bamafun, on 02/28/2008, -1/+7I really try to never duplicate a story - I even search digg myself by keyword at times if I think there might be a lot submitting on the same topic and even then I've mistakenly submitted another copy of the story because the story didn't show up in search. I agree with you that you could just explain in comments ..... but for instance right now there are 6 stories about the Pittsburgh announcer dying .... 4 in up and coming ..... makes no sense!
- thailand1972, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5Agree. In fact, these options give these cynical popularity contest people an excuse to duplicate
- Kanidia, on 02/28/2008, -0/+11Agreed. What about the button that says "I just added a "#" sign to the end of the URL and resubmitted?
- Shawn4168, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7Agreed, but Digg has more or less devolved into a popularity contest anyway.
- bamafun, on 02/28/2008, -1/+7I really try to never duplicate a story - I even search digg myself by keyword at times if I think there might be a lot submitting on the same topic and even then I've mistakenly submitted another copy of the story because the story didn't show up in search. - FamilyGuyFan, on 02/28/2008, -1/+83I'd love to see a feature that would let us combine multiple dupe stories into one. This way the earlier story could hit homepage much faster with more added diggs.
- bamafun, on 02/28/2008, -1/+8Awesome idea !!!! I looked at the front page a little bit ago and there wasn't a story on it under 17 hours old. Thats stale news and not what digg use to be about.
- Kanidia, on 02/28/2008, -0/+10I have to say, this idea should be implemented. I think that if digg users can merge topics together, and have a "collection" of URLs and users who submitted the same story (with different sites) then they should all be grouped together. I'm tired of seeing "NEW MACBOOK [PICS]" "Finally here...." "APPLE ANNOUNCES NEW MACBOOK" and "Gizmodo: I just jacked another article" all on the front page. This would get rid of popularity contests, because everyone will be included in the credits. However, this will probably result in gaming the system, so it would have to be implemented strategically. Good idea to think about though.
- centran, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4Great idea.
Kind of like how Google News groups it's stories. Brilliant! How would/Who would tie the digg's together? What to do with the comments? Bah! These are question for Kevin Rose to answer. Give him some Bawls and get him to work. - razorsharp84, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2I like this idea too. Users could digg a specific URL that has been submitted, which would increase the rank of that URL within the story and also simultaneously digg the overall story for doing so.
- BlaenkDenum, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Nice idea! However, what will be done about spammers? What's stopping a bunch of people from submitting the same URL? This shouldn't be difficult to counter, but still must be thought about.
- Enche, on 02/28/2008, -4/+16Why doesn't Digg have this yet? :(
- HigherLogic, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7Because programming to outsmart human behavior (read: stupidity) is harder than it sounds...
- MarkLaymon, on 02/28/2008, -5/+2Yep Yep Yep

- Aidje, on 02/28/2008, -0/+10Give it a week or two.
- Lixie, on 02/28/2008, -0/+180You forgot the option, "Same site, just link jacked. Adds nothing. But I want to get on the front page."
- thailand1972, on 02/28/2008, -1/+95Also: "I'm MrBabyMan. Outta my ***** way"
- Caleb83, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2I like your avatar, lixie
- MyDiggIsBig, on 02/28/2008, -1/+21you forgot the "I'm just desperate for attention" option
- Albo23, on 02/28/2008, -4/+5Nay.
- GhostWithToast, on 02/28/2008, -2/+227Except it should look like this

- porplem, on 02/28/2008, -1/+16Digg users should be able to vote to merge duplicate stories together. If there's a consensus, the story with the greater amount of Diggs keeps its title and receives an "alternative link" link from the other story.
- Balk2K, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3And the diggs are added together since they're essentially digging the same thing
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/28/2008, -16/+3Digg needs this for duplicate stories.

- Destined, on 02/28/2008, -1/+14Also would be nice for the a blog-spam category / method of users altering the link to the actual story.
- Jerky1312, on 02/28/2008, -0/+10I think I had suggested this in a comment a few months ago. There should be a place to insert the original story/url. If enough members submit the original and enough users than agree to digg to replace the story, it should automatically replace the link.
- fael, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1hell, the digg team can't even finish the new comment system.
if they start working on that today, they might finish by summer 2009 (and it will be buggy)
but yeah, cool idea.
- fael, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1hell, the digg team can't even finish the new comment system.

- Hefelumpman, on 02/28/2008, -5/+4I think I'll let the Digg developers do their own thing :)
- weirdness67, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5Yeah that's worked wonders so far...
- caupolixan, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6 Seconded mmmmm damn I just dupe a comment, yeah I am lame :(.
- sjdillard, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8problem: some tools will just submit identical stories bc they want cred on digg
- mrkakka, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3No it doesn't
People just need to title their stories better - fishrjv, on 02/28/2008, -3/+4Duplicates can be useful at times.. I don't catch all of the good stories the first time around.
- purzzzell, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3not repeats (days or weeks later)- duplicates are same day, and only one of 'em ever hits front page anyway.
- hueyha, on 02/28/2008, -1/+18No, that would never work. The colors of the buttons don't match Digg's colors.
- proteon, on 02/28/2008, -10/+5You boys aren't desperate for attention at least no moreso here at Digg than in your every ""I am a myspace page" life.
You're desperate for . . .
wait for it . . .
Validation.- cheeseron, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2if you want to make a point don't waste so much screen space. just say what you have to say.
- gsadamb, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1That's opposed to you. Maybe you don't want validation, but you sure as hell seem to need attention by taking half the screen to write two sentences. Might as well have just written your post in all caps and preceded it with "L@@K!!!!!"
- Jerky1312, on 02/28/2008, -1/+3Dupes of the same story, but different link should be kept as back in case the original site goes down. Than an option to digg to replace the original will be available. You could also do this with links about the same story, just give us an option to read about the story, if the original link is digg effected.
- nonconformist, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8But..but...duplicate stories make up around 95% of digg contributions! ;-)
- GothAlice, on 02/28/2008, -0/+12Having a "bury, Duplicate" option which asks you for a link to the original digg. Once enough people bitch about a story being duplicated, the digg can be hidden and a warning displayed.
- IILiLJohnII, on 02/28/2008, -5/+1That would be great so i wouldn't have to post links like this http://www.proposition317.com/
- danomagnum, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3I could sure use a mirror... maybe there is a dupe of this somewhere...
- UN1CORN, on 02/28/2008, -1/+6The last thing digg needs is a longer submission process
- Buckey1983, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Exactly, plus duplicates usually don't make popular very often and if they do it's usually a good enough article to see a second time.
- HigherLogic, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2That's not the problem. The problem happens when a "higher up" submits a story, knowing it's a duplicate, and it hits the front page, when the same story submitted by someone else (who probably has a life) doesn't go anywhere.
- waldo686, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5yeah because it's so overly difficult right now
- Buckey1983, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Exactly, plus duplicates usually don't make popular very often and if they do it's usually a good enough article to see a second time.
- JkXkXkXkXkXkL, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5This makes sense, especially for big-time stories with dozens of copycat entries.
- dboy3587, on 02/28/2008, -10/+2OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
- LordSeth, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2This would be good for adding Mirrors to coz we all now how the servers crash when girls are mentioned
- rendereduseless, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3would never work.
- TheArcadeFire, on 02/28/2008, -1/+18Alright show of hands..... anyone else besides me actually try clicking on the image =/
- niteskunk, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6Really? o_o
I mean, there's JPEG artifacts all over the place. Nice job :3 - daishin, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2I did! I had to read your comment before I realized what was wrong.
- mille716, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7Mom, is that you? What did I tell you about trying to use computers all by yourself?
/just teasing ya :) - mrASSMAN, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Nope, because I have the Greased Lightbox script.
- niteskunk, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6Really? o_o
- djdedeo0, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Who cares what the box looks like?
- SHv2, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Taser is sadly missing :(
- jamesov89, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3They talked about this topic in the latest town hall video . . .
- sonar1, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3the duplicate story feature that digg currently has in place worked for my last submission. i 'swore it was original' because it had a better headline with no grammar errors.
- DavidinBoston, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3Duplicate stories as designated by Digg should simply be able to be filtered out via one's account preferences. That way, if someone has no problem seeing repeated stories that they might have missed, they can leave things be, but if they want them filtered out, they can check a "filter out duplicate stories" box.
- Auzy, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3Its more important to use frames to open the target page in a frame, and put the "digg" button in a upper frame. Because at the moment, most people are not even visiting the article they digg. Thats why there are so many dupes and crappy stories making it to the front, because people just read the heading (which could be totally unrelated), and digg it. If people were forced to go to the page first, they would easily see it had been on digg earlier.
- mogebier, on 02/28/2008, -5/+3How about a button that says "YOU ARE A RETARDED DOUCHE FOR SUBMITTING THIS. WE ALL HOPE YOU DIE!!!!"
Or maybe something nicer. Nah. - ErikHK, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4http://digg.com/design/Duplicate_Feature_for_Digg
naah, just kidding. - NinjaPirateDude, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2hopefully this will stop the "penn and teller explaining sleight of hand" poppin up every few months.
- BOFH2, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1lets hold a secret meeting to talk about leaving digg and somehow let people know about so digg bigwigs can talk us down...
BAH - CaviMike, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1When I try to submit something that's similar or dupe(which is EVERYTHING so far) it always gives me a warning that something similar may have already been submitted. It's not digg, it's the submitter. If they want to post a dupe, they're going to post a dupe because the OP isn't always the one that makes the front page.
- 3leggedHorse, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1 Roll on cheap SSD drives.
