- invader, on 10/09/2008, -1/+50I agree that as-is, the Podcast section is out of place and might as well be dropped. However, I can't help but wonder if there is a better system for podcasts that would keep the popular from getting stuck on top. Digg is all about fresh content and breaking news, but the podcast section didn't follow that model. Imagine if top blogs (techcrunch.com, mashable.com, engadget.com, deltatangobravo.com, etc) were stuck at the top of the Digg front page?
- sbwms, on 10/09/2008, -1/+43The launch of Podcasts came over the xmas/new year holiday at the end of 2006, after an intense design/code/test slam that was really a ton of fun. Digg was a much smaller company then, and it was a blast to be working together on-line, many of us traveling around the world for the holiday, on a feature we thought might be important to the emerging podcasting culture.
I don't feel bad at all that our work didn't have the impact we thought it might. We learned a lot from the project, and we'll keep experimenting. - ted_hosmann, on 10/09/2008, -0/+33All along I thought the model was broken. Better to digg episodes of podcasts, not entire feeds. The turnover would be much better - real time even, as new episodes of shows are produced and old content becomes stale.
- mbstrlbstr, on 10/09/2008, -1/+29WTF? What about audio podcasts?
- dburka, on 10/09/2008, -1/+17Brian and Ted: Yep, I agree that the design of that section was a big part of the problem with keeping the content renewed. When we were debating whether to retire podcasting on Digg, it was basically a debate of the value of investing the time into redoing the section as something more fluid and engaging or rolling it under. We decided that the natural flow of content into video was a good thing and that the major effort to build an independent podcasting section was not worth the distraction from building great new features into the core of Digg.
- ravis31, on 10/09/2008, -0/+16I kinda liked the Digg spy,too bad its being retired!
- quaunaut, on 10/09/2008, -1/+13When even Microsoft calls them podcasts on the Zune, no.
- chris4404, on 10/09/2008, -0/+11I'm gonna miss the spy, I like to leave it up on my dual screen.
- NolanFinn, on 10/09/2008, -1/+10Rollerblade, Kleenex, Podcast
- dburka, on 10/09/2008, -0/+9It's really easy. Go to 'Customize' in the header and deselect the Linux/Unix option and you'll never see items in that topic ever again while you're signed in.
- takua108, on 10/09/2008, -1/+9How about some more work on the oft-forgotten Digg Labs?
- ted_hosmann, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8I still worry a bit about rolling it all under video. I understand that Rev3 is focused on making the best "video" content on the web, but not all podcasts are video. Just look at the TWiT network.
I don't disagree with the decision to remove Podcasts as a major heading - your statement about "subtraction is an oft-overlooked type of improvement" is spot-on. But looking back at my podcast feeds and only seven of the twenty-four are video podcasts. I think adding Podcasts to Video will only confuse the issue further. - slickowicz, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7http://digg.com/software/3D_Interactive_Digg_API_V ...

I saw this last week. Awesome 3D visualization of anyone's Digg network. You can rotate and zoom the visualization, and maneuver around interactively with the data after it is graphed, as well as read stories right in the app - drmobutu, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8I don't know about anybody else, but I have no use for video...I prefer plain old audio podcasts...
- banmeagaindigg, on 10/09/2008, -4/+11yeah because 'downloadable mp3 show' sounds so much better.
- choward, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6No worries ... the BigSpy screensaver's not going anywhere.
- diggdatt, on 10/09/2008, -4/+10This is *****, Digg Spy is like the best ***** app ever, I dont want the flash versions bitch.
- ceris, on 10/09/2008, -1/+7A shame, I'd like to have seen something better done with Podcasts here. Anyone else come up with any digg-like www sites that do feature podcasts?
podcastalley.com is still good, anything else? - danielsamuels, on 10/09/2008, -2/+8Yeah, imagine if only a few users hit the front page multiple times on a daily basis.
Oh.. wait.. - ted_hosmann, on 10/09/2008, -1/+6This has been a good conversation - I believe the community will be very supportive of the changes moving forward. Godspeed.
- dburka, on 10/09/2008, -2/+7I think the language in the blog post might be a bit confusing. 'Podcasts' are going to be retired from Digg. However, much video podcast content will be found in the 'videos' section of the site as it is today, but perhaps more so. I don't want to be disingenuous to suggest that podcasts as an independent media type will live on at Digg.
- danillum, on 10/10/2008, -1/+6Please don't get rid of Spy. It's the most practical one to use!
- SisyphusFragmnt, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4It's a shame that audio is going to be left out as a form of media here on Digg now.. :(
- Antimatt, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4Under 1000 regular users in podcasts? All this time, I thought the Digg buttons were broken in the podcast section.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/09/2008, -1/+5Hey, I didn't say I have a better name for them - Podcast is a pretty ***** name though, and it's unfortunate it's the norm. I still don't understand why I'd be dugg down for suggesting this though - it's a perfectly good idea, and I think it confuses people who aren't familiar with the concept. Not only does it suggest that only iPods can access them, but it does nothing to describe what the hell they even are, save for the tiny "cast" hint.
- spect3r, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4Good work. Too bad though, I found alot of my current day podcasts there... but they never seem to move as they don't get dugg.
I wish more people woulda participated in the podcasts section, including myself. - SteveSgt, on 10/09/2008, -1/+5Video bigots. Everyone know that the best podcasts are audio-only.
"I prefer radio to television, the pictures are better." --Allstair Cooke - IllBeBack, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4I think that some people actually like to see it just so they can come in and whine about it like a pussy.
- Nothlit, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4Perhaps you could just go directly to diggnation.com rather than circuitously getting to it through Digg.
- SteveSgt, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3"A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a sound is worth a thousand pictures." --Naturalist Bernie Krause
http://www.wildsanctuary.com/ - SisyphusFragmnt, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3iTunes has a lot of podcasts on it..
- Coolaborations, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3I think it would be cool if users could have some kind of control over the "magnification" level of stories in BigSpy (the degree to which more dugg stories are magnified compared to less dugg stories) -- perhaps by letting the users choose the *number of diggs* at which stories become magnified?
- Draugrdraugr, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3This makes me sad, Big Spy offends my eyes.
- enterneo, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3the problem as to why popular podcasts stay on the top is because users are allowed to "Digg the Podcast". When I go to the Podcast section, I see podcasts being dugg, and only when I click on a podcast do I see individual episodes being dugg/commented. Users should only be allowed to digg the episodes, so a good episode from "not so popular" podcast could also have possibility to reach the top, and would allow us to find out as to what were the best episodes from "different podcasts" in a partiicular timeframe.
- prokhor, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3I really liked the podcasts section, not so much for finding anything, but rather to share the podcast episodes I thought were interesting with friends through my digg rss feed. It's kinda sad to see this functionality lost - I don't know where else on the web has it.
- Konstantino, on 10/09/2008, -1/+4It's a little too late for that, though. Even the Zune acknowledges these shows as podcasts, so renaming it would only cause confusion.
- DrunkenStumble, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2What the hell... So I'm navigating my way over to digg spy as always and what the hell do I find? This obnoxious page of hard to read garbage.
I stopped going to the front page well over a year ago. If it was important enough Id eventually see it on Digg spy.
This is absolutely horrible. Bring back my Digg Spy!!! - inactive, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2I've never even clicked on the podcast tab here. I've always gotten it directly from Revision3.com
- holeymoley, on 10/09/2008, -1/+2Up and coming podcasts never had a chance in the podcast section that was dominated by the same old thing week after week. It certainly never worked for discovering new podcasts or showcasing outstanding gems from less popular ones.
- CogitatorX, on 10/09/2008, -1/+2whatever. So what's Digg worth these days about $4? No more web 2.0 paper fortunes for you.
- bigbill780, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Now I will have to sift through all the deer in headlights podcasts made my teenages to find videos of ninja cats... great.
- bcope16, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1I would much rather you do it like you do news articles. Instead of digging the whole podcast, dig individual episodes.
Or should we be doing that now in DIGG under the proper category? - SapientWolf, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1I have to commute several hours away and podcasts have made the trip more bearable. I hope they're not going away.
The videos also have to compete with everything else when it comes to my free time at home but while driving your only choices are music, audio books or podcasts. There are shows I would never have the time to watch but have plenty of time to listen to. - acroyear2, on 10/09/2008, -1/+2The podcast section sucks. It needs a major redesign. It should do more than simply feature podcasts but more so, specific episodes that people submit.
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -1/+2Only if we rename it Zunecast
- dburka, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Thanks so much for being one of the loyal people who used this section. I for one really appreciate it.
- Hellmark, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1For me it really kind of sucks, because while video podcasts are now in the video section, what about the audio ones?
- mazerrackham, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2If the Spy goes away in all honesty I'll probably stop visiting Digg...it was the only useful way I found to watch the upcoming queue for comments (which is sort of why I come here -- to read interesting and amusing comments on today's news).
Big spy is neat in a "look what I can do with the interwebs!" kinda way, but it is also ugly as hell and I can't leave it up at work without looking like I'm playing a damn videogame or something. Same goes for all the other Labs offerings. All they need is "pew pew pew" sound effects.
Oh well, I'm sure I won't be missed. I just wanted the Digg powers that be to know... -
