Creating a page curl in Photoshop
veerle.duoh.com — Today’s tutorial was a request by Kirk from Smallest Photo. As you all know, the way I do or show it isn ’t the ‘only’ way, it’s just my way and I’m open for any other tips or suggestions. As always I had fun doing this and I’m always happy to share stuff like this. So here it goes…
- 993 diggs
- digg it
- Alawiggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.duggmirror.com
- rhizome, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Isn't there a "Page Curl" menu option in PS by now?
- 0o0Moylan0o0, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Pity it was done on a mac.. and that the page curl looks like crap
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My sister thought this effect looked good in 1999 or so using "Ulead" something or other. I remember telling her it looked *****.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Page Curl = Old School = Kai Krauss = Kai's Power Tools
- chumpbuster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Do not use this effect. It is bad design and overused 5 years ago.
These cheesy old fx will only hurt the layouts you worked so hard on.- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2@chumpbuster
So... create a better tutorial, submit it, and I'll dig it. - chumpbuster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I don't need to create a better tutorial. There are plenty of current techniques and tutorials on how to create them.
Honestly, it's not that it's a bad tutorial, it's just old news and considered poor design. - shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@chumpbuster
i like that reply a lot better. Well played sir. - sleggat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It is bad design? Says who? Sure, it's not exactly a new effect but it still has its uses. The thing with tutorials such as this, it's not so much about the end result, but how you get there. I dugg it.
- Moby22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@chumpbuster
It's considered poor design by designers who have seen and done a billion times, yet it still draws 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from the general public.
Frankly, I think any "cheesy old fx" has its place in design work. Sure, you should never overuse any technique, but just because it is common doesn't mean that it is bad.
Even blinking text can be used. Once. Maybe in a tutorial about cheesy effects and how not to overuse them. ;)
- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2@chumpbuster
- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7That's a lot simpler than the way I've done it in the past. Great tutorial!
PS: I'm shocked to see an educational article on the front page. I think I remember seeing one a couple of days ago too. Keep it up diggers! - Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4another photoshop tutorial...
Don't flood digg with crap like this linking to a BLOG.
www.good-tutorials.com has all the tutorials you need.- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8But... It's Veerle's blog. She's practically famous.
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Veerle: the only thing good coming from Belgium. Next to their beer, of course. And waffles, I like waffles. Sad they don't mix very well, reading her blog while drinking beer and eating waffles that is. The blog aint bad, it's the waffle/beer mix that's causing a bad combo.
But I digress.
Yay for curly page effects in the flat-flat-FLAT web "2.0" disaster that's cursing the web. Yay I say! - spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they have some pretty zany architecture too. though i guess thats not really coming out of the country.
the beer is enough for me.
- schur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Why is it always Photoshop.
I dont have it. Give me some Gimp tutorials.- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2While it would be nice, I don't think we Linux users are too deprived of tutorials here on Digg.
...Unless you're using Gimp/Win, in which case.... eww.... - shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.gimptalk.com/
All the GIMP tutorials you'll need.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2While it would be nice, I don't think we Linux users are too deprived of tutorials here on Digg.
- DiscoLando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're allowed one Page Curl per life. Vincent Flanders says so.
- chrisOrbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tutorials are very bad except for explaining the tools and functionality to new users. There should be more tutorials on proper photoshop technique and design principals. So many people love these tutorials because they don't understand basic principals of art. Understanding light, shadow, form, color, ect. is the first place to start once you have that these tutorials are obsolete.
- rebuilder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could not agree more. Blindly applying "effects" instead of thinking about what you need and applying a good base knowledge of drawing and painting to the task is a hallmark of amateurs.
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1however you have to admit this is a pretty efficient way of creating this particular effect.
i find it helpful to see the same thing done multiple ways in most cases. especially with a program like photoshop.
- Pixelbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too bad page curls are basically the icon of bad design.
- noouch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, page curl is so 1997.
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to graphic designers who spend all day designing and looking graphics.
not the general public
- phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there's filters that are aesthetically better than this. why go through tutorials to create an effect when there's superior algorithms that do it for you. spend that time learning more fundamental design, so you can implement those algorithms to your benefit.
- caworden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how people say "so 1997", yet all the kids today still listen to music that to me was so "1970".
Old is good, but I agree..don't overuse it.
Think retro - Wolfr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It has it's uses, but it just doesn't fit in most designs. Dugg down for non-interesting news.
- stoney27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well if you want good tutorials for Photoshop you need to subscribe to
photoshoptv.com video pod cast. As long as you can get by their really
bad jokes, they are Photographers not actors. They have some very
cool tips. - toecutter169, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What next, a Digg for a tutorial on beveled edges?
:) Seriously, like it was mentioned above, it IS considered bad/old design and should be shuffled under the rug or put on a 'look at how to do these really old designy things' website. - tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay! A detailed tutorial for how to make cheesy, canned effects in Photoshop!
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMHO
Yes, the concept is old but there are individuals lost in the Web that just might be interested in the focus of this submission. I am rather verse at photoshop and other tools but I am never too verse to learn something new. Maybe you know how to do this but the person that is showing you comes up with an alt way to approach the situation (that saves you time). The best part about these DIY or HowTo: is going beyond the actual article and checking out what others are doing (from the websites that they have). Learning is power and Refreshing your knowledge never hurts - it is like a cup of Joe for your online brain. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Veerle is great, a lot of her tutorials are superbly useful and almost always fullfiling a request, not promoting her blog. While this probably was not one of the more digg-worthy tutorials, it is still a useful tutorial and it does still have its place in design. It doesn't have many places but it has a place.
