- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -10/+78I just wanted to say that I noticed something very suspect about the frontpage today.
digitalgopher has like 10 frontpage stories out of the last 40. If you look at who has Dugg his stories, it almost always includes a very similar group of people (at least at first), such as 3monkeys, supernova17, alex.bosworth, etc. Coincidentally, if you look at the stories that each of them have submitted, pretty much every single one of them have Dugg each other's stories as well. Several of them are on the frontpage very often, such as tlman59.
It is like this single group of people controlling the frontpage. I'm trying to figure out how I can do more detailed statistical work on it, but if you just look at the stories they have submitted and their friend's history manually, it becomes very obvious.
This is incredibly lame. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51Does it remind you of transformers b/c it transforms?
- Boor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44Let us all throw sharp objects at them, then i suggest some fire. Is there an internet equivilant to sharp objects and fire?
- cybercat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Wow, that sure is creative! Sorta reminds me of transformers for some reason... :)
- masterkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36they should add the optional "transformer" sound when you change it back and forth :)
- apzdsx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Transformers...
More than meets the eye...
Transformers...
Bunk beds in disguise.
(I know, I'm horrible!) - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23That is pretty silly, though. A group of people, such as this one, can continually digg each other's stories, which means upon submission, they essentially get 10 or 15 automatic diggs. What is the person who just submits quality content supposed to do, when they don't get this 15 vote headstart?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21What happens if you are sleeping in the bed and somebody transforms it back with you in it?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29That happens everyday. Get some friends and you can get on the frontpage too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16the point over here is that with those initial 10-15 diggs, story gets on the front page and once there, it's very easy to accumulate many more diggs. But if some quality story fails to hit the front page, it never gets beyond 3-4 diggs mark.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12These guys each have 100+ promoted stories. I looked into these guys myself a couple days ago. The sneaky bit here is, all they have to do is digg each others stories, and it's almost guaranteed to hit the front page. That's if you believe in a Digg algorithm, that gives more weight to diggs from members who themselves have a lot of promoted stories.
It was this member -> http://digg.com/users/p9s50W5k4GUD2c6/profile that got me looking at them, when I noticed he was submitting damn near a story every 10 minutes, and then I saw he had 600+ promoted stories. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Perl + LWP + eff's TOR and a number of Digg accounts and you can easily submit your stories and have your bot account Digg them for you. With a near random IP address from the TOR proxy, a saved cookie jar, etc. Making random comment posts and what not would be pretty easy.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Many of us have been screaming about this for months. Unfortunantly, not many people are listening.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Bingo, headzoo.
That guy you just linked to is one of the guys that I've been noticing digging or being dugg by this same group of people.
Notice the stories he has dugg, same group of people: tlmac59, superova17, etc. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Check out this guy: gwjc:
http://digg.com/users/gwjc/dugg
Nearly all of the stories he has dugg are from digitalgopher. He also has dugg 3monkeys and the ps guy that headzoo just linked to.
Now look at his story that hasn't yet hit the frontpage:
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Why_Quantum_Mechanics_Is_Not_So_Weird_after_All/who
Who has dugg it? Same people:
* tlmac59
* digitalgopher
* chrisek (also on the frontpage)
* supernova 17 - tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's awesome, wish I'd had one whilst in the dorms.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Check this out. This story hasn't yet hit the frontpage, but it is the same group of people:
Also check out which stories they have dugg themselves...again, almost always the same group.
http://digg.com/business_finance/FindSavings_com_Uses_Google_Mini_Search_Appliance_to_Increase_Coupon_Usage/who - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i hate it when these ultra cool items are up on digg, and yet are never available for sale!
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This has got to be one of the coolest couches ever. Awesome digg!
- digitalgreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@masterkenobi
its funny when kids would try to transform the toys in the same amount of time as the tramsformers did in the cartoons...which is the same amount of time it takes for that sound byte to play eehhh OOOO eeeent ANT eeT
so yea, you think people will want the bed to fold in that same time frame haha... - Volatile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Group diggers are lame, but this story is anything but. I found this incredibly clever and awesome.
- BigG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"What happens if you are sleeping in the bed and somebody transforms it back with you in it?"
If you are on top, you end up on the floor as the top bed flips upside down to tuck below the lower. If you are on the bottom, nothing will happen to you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um, you wash it? The same thing you'd do if it were only a bed (you would wash your kid's bed right, and not make him sleep in piss until he's 18 right?)
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@jesusphreak - welcome to digg, the social news site that presents like a democracy and functions like an oligarchy.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've got a list of about 14 of these guys here -> http://www.480x.com/2006/09/06/working-digg/ . After looking through all their profiles, it does seem like something fishy is going on.
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Boor
DDoS and Spam? - TehKrut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if you could sound more gay.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, now instead of one uncomfortable pull out bed, you get two!
- rysmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One person could've created the group of accounts just so that person could get people looking at stuff. He could then make some money by raising traffic to the sites he's digging. Getting linked from digg.com could provide enough linking to increase a site's Google's page rank over time. I wouldn't be surprised if this person was getting paid for SEO work.
- sporkit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's a dorm room disaster waiting to happen. i imagine my friends would be the first to try to get it to fold while i was sleeping. neat idea nonetheless. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The more I look at it the less practical it seems. It looks incredibly uncomfortable and small. It's basically like sleeping on a thin couch every night. Why not stick to the traditional convertible couch/bed (of course it's not two beds) which can be a lot more roomier and comfortable.
- lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there was a digg story about this some time ago, dont remember what it was called though. it also pointed out that some people had as much as 75% frontpage rate due to this.
- hman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when folded, a compact cube computer desk would be the perfect coffee table to put next to my transformable couch!
- Lifestory, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4... well.. i bet they are sitting on the sofa right now and reading this.
- bannonto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Three people have 9 of top 15 stories on front page.
The question now is, do we care if they are good stories? I have looked at most of them, and am at least slightly interested. - Zr970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awsome for space saving in a dorm room!
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"ts not as if they are submitting their adsense blogs or anything though. If they are submitting even mildly interesting stories then more power to them."
It doesn't have to be just about money or traffic. It could also be about ego and power. The ego of having 600+ promoted stories, and the power of controlling what ends up in the Digg front page. - mostapha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg because the sofa looks too good.
- aer0sense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want one that would look so sweet in my room
- bromine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is this small group of people really gaining from getting their stories on the front page of digg?
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg...
Not for the bunk-bed, but for some of the other wall units they have. Now just to figure out how much my wallet will get raped if I have anything delivered to CA. - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only one side of the top bunk has a railing on it..........
- Jayeugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got dibs on top!
- LabRat777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take that, futon!
- lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool. there was a computer desk that morphed in a similair fashion not too long ago, which i think was made by the same company. quite an innovative company if you ask me.
- noodleNT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"integrated/patented mechanism"
It's called a hinge. Ooohhh how amazing!
Cool idea though. - iamdexter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Many of us have been screaming about this for months. Unfortunantly, not many people are listening." Count me in the list.
