- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32No, I'm sorry, that Butter Stick idea is absolutely brilliant. Where can I buy one?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29I think the umbrella is a winner, I hate it when you are dry from the shoulders up. The butter on a stick is pretty cool as well. Not to sure about the chin rest though...
- gwey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Well it's useless for those of us with lungs.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I second the umbrella but the butter on a stick concerns me greatly
- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The umbrella one is pretty neat, I would pick one of those up.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yes, it's the wonderful world of Chindogu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chind%C5%8Dgu - Adabard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13These are hilarious...looks like something I'd make ~frowns~
- philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -0/+12STOP STIFLING INNOVATION!!!
- chrisrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's like "99 completely useless Japanese inventions" - I used to have it, the book itself is atleast 12 years old I think...
This book is the sequel I think - http://www.amazon.ca/99-More-Unuseless-Japanese-Inventions/dp/0006388973 - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Stupid... or brilliant?
- open_sauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This story and http://digg.com/tech_news/How_to_Make_Money_with_YouTube_Videos are both stories mentioned in:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Exploring_Pay_Per_Digg
In other words, someone is offering to pay digg users to rapidly digg them to get to the front page.
Looks like its working as they are currently the 1st 2 stories on the front page.
I'm going to cross post this to the other story as well - Twitchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Butter.. in a glue stick.. BUTTER! IN A FREAKIN GLUE STICK! The most brilliant idea ev-ar! where can I order a dozen?
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Inventions on that page which are NOT useless:
1. Butter stick.
2. Eyedrop funnel. - jellomizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I would agree. It isn't good for all applications but it is great for buttering toast or other flat foods, Oiling a pan. The reason why it wouldn't sell especially in America is the fact that you touching food against foods. So if you used the stick to butter raw pork then after that you butter your bread you could get sick. In hence in America because if you do something stupid it is someone else fault, to the person who sells this connivence will be bankrupt from some stupid smuck who decided to sue him because he got tapeworm.
- Drakonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Everything but the umbrella was pretty much stupid, although the hardhat+plugner combo would be pretty nice in school. No more holding my head up while I sleep for me.
- b0nb0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I still can't beleive it's butter! :)
- avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you would look like a kind of tool and couldn't really walk in it.. but yes i wouldn't call it useless.. bring on the forcefield though.. Think 'Dune' but just for not getting wet
- duewydo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know we could make our own butter dispensers. When you done with your glue stick, clean it out real good with hot watter. Then get some butter and warm it up so it soft and then just shove it into the glue stick while it is screwed down to its lowest point. then throw the glue stick into the fridge or freezer wait an hour or two and BAM instant butter stick!
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5> i love the fan one cause when i eat my noodles it always burn my tounge.
Why don't you just blow on it? - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I had that idea when I was around 12 I think :D
- ste1700, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I too like the umbrella invention. I would buy one. Just one thing, How do you get the length to be the right size?
- Hinph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the eyedrop funnel... I suck at putting eyedrops in.
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6this stuffs been online since the 90's. old hat, but still good for a quick laugh.
- RobSaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Butter stick. followed by a peanut butter and jelly stick. instant packed lunch on the go! ;)
- juneof44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rule number 5 of Chindogu: "Chindogu are not for sale
"Chindogu are not tradable commodities. If you accept money for one you surrender your purity. They must not even be sold as a joke. "
http://www.chindogu.com/chindogu/tenents.html - green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Useless?!! I am in desperate need of those things in my every day life. I definitely need those noodle cooling chopsticks for my top ramen, that suction cup head holder for when I fall asleep on the bus, and definitely the butter stick, for obvious reasons.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://waqarkhan.com//NewInventions/sld001.htm should be the link (first slide).
- ator1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The butter stick concept can be accomplished with a regular stick of butter and one of the ends partially unwrapped. One less knife to wash, that's what I'm saying.
- mmmork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah it's Chindogu.
But am I the only one who thinks most are fecking brilliant????
They are not useless, they're fantastic - Fedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.amazon.com/101-Unuseless-Japanese-Inventions-Chindogu/dp/0393313697/sr=8-1/qid=1160328640/ref=sr_1_1/104-7476577-8035114?ie=UTF8&s=books
Here's the original, where all of the pictures in the original article came from.
I bought this book a while ago. There's some really good ones in there. I like the wearable washing machines. - xyqxyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I GOT AN IDEA!
Let's weakly attack electronics to a thin wooden stick, and then dip the stick into a bowl full of liquid! - shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i buy butter that's in a bottle and spray it on food.
i'd love a gluestick type one though - marioluigi123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I could tell by the site design. :)
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There were two books in that series - one called "101 UnUseless Japanese Inventions" (orange cover) and the other "99 More UnUseless Japanese Inventions" (blue cover).
I recognise all those inventions... - Davinci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where can I sign up for a butter stick?
- TheKeithD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't you mean "WTF mate?"
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, yes. You're digging into the very heart of Chindogu, which are in same genus as Rube Goldberg devices in that they present a 'ridiculous' solution to a problem, to highlight certain absurdities of life, and the foibles of the human condition, and perhaps moreover, to simply entertain through whimsy. As a commenter mentioned above, there are 10 tenents of Chindogu, which explain these, and other matters Chindogu.
http://www.chindogu.com/chindogu/tenents.html
In particular:
"If you invent something which turns out to be so handy that you use it all the time, then you have failed to make a Chindogu."
"If you accept money for one you surrender your purity."
All of my inventions have always ended up as Chindogu, or near-relatives, as I have very few views I care to push on others with what I create, and seem to have a very bad sense of what the world actually finds to be good ideas, and by that I mean "things they'd pay for." - kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually had the Chindogu book as well, it was on my dorm room desk in college, people used to poke through it and get a good laugh when they were drunk. Those pictures are straight out of the book.
- giveaphuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah i also think its a great idea!! exp. if u use really good quailty butter!
- painfulpillow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember seeing the toilet paper dispenser on Home Improvement, very funny!
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spray butter is even more convenient.
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah seeing as i watched the show in japan where they acutally featured all of these.... i was a KID at the time, i would say these are rather old... still a good laugh, but soooo 15 years ago :p
- thydzik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh, those have been circulating for ages.
Agree that the butter on a stick is the most useful and convenient.
Being from Australia, we look at your Cheese in a Can and think 'wtf?' - HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not sure about everyone else, but i think they're all great lol 'cept for that chin-thing... hmm..
- TheKeithD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, as I was reading that, I began thinking "Gee, way to take the fun out of this" but when I hit #1, I was amused. Good work.
- chaiwalla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I first came across these images in The Whole Earth Review in the mid-90's. The Chindogu book is worth reading (I read the first one). This story is not only dated but misses the point. Chindogu are a form of art. Its purpose is to create things which are not useful but almost could be. If something is useful, it is an invention, not Chindogu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have a book with all of these called
The Art Of Chindogu: 101 Un-Useless Inventions
Its probably 8 years old. - RaveGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want a butter stick! No more knives!
- TRENT310, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh, you mean attack or attach?
Here's me thinking we should attack electronics and corner it at a thin wooden stick :/ - Valnar300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as you don't confuse it with a glue stick...
