- reva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A subtle color palette can be a good thing. I think the site had a very nice and professional color scheme going for it, actually.

And having worked in advertising for 17 years now - long before the web boom started - I can tell you that the vast majority of people who think owning Photoshop and a web development application with no degree are not terribly competent at design, either.
While a large portion of the schooling I took in design was not very applicable, there were some important things learned about composition, colour, typography and more. The fact that we didn't have the web around back then meant we spent more time focusing on the fundamentals of design, rather than teaching people about software and programming languages. It should be noted, however, that we did have Macs then and did learn work in Photoshop and whatnot, so I wasn't being schooled in the stone age.
The fact of the matter is, I have seen so many people who consider themselves to be web "designers" who are really nothing more than people who can do some coding, or know how to use WYSIWYG editors, blatantly and poorly steal designs they see on the internet and think they are experts. Expertise comes from experience and talent, not merely owning the tools that other experts employ.
And before you bother "you're an old guy who doesn't know a thing about the web" replies (which now pretty much guarantees I'll get just that), I'll just say "whatever".
All that said, colour theory can be boring, and I do find it interesting the complete lack of colour techniques utilised on that page. ^____^ - Orangutan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4why do you need to read the article once you know that the all powerful kevin rose has dugg it? I mean come on, are you new here?
- nekaidesigns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've gone through the process of hiring a few designers - trust me, having a degree in graphic design does not equate to being good at it, nor does the lack of a degree negate one's abilities.
- malkir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I hope you aren't in charge of hiring anyone if you think a degree somehow miraculously bestows knowledge on someone. Being a student I can tell you that the vast majority of people getting a degree are not even competent in their field, much less an expert; and I am quite sure that there are people out there without even high school diplomas that could code circles around most of the computer science people I know.
- DougTanner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I counted about 15 different ones just at a quick glance, how many do you need exactly?
/Less is more :p - DjOverEZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on, nobody who dugg this actually read what's on the page.

I agree with everything you said actually. I don't believe that getting an education is pointless, or a bad idea. If I thought that I wouldn't be getting one.
I was saying that a college degree by itself does not make someone good in their respective field. If someone has talent and motivation in a field they will get their education however they can. Often times that means is teaching themselves; learning online, or from books in a library.
I will admit I'm pretty much turned off to college at this point (graduating pretty soon). And I do kinda find it silly that I have spent an insane amount of money on an education that I could have received from spending a couple thousand on books at Borders. But I need that piece of paper that say I have a degree! That I r smart!
Anyway, enough of my ranting. - danescobar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i meant in their lesson and their examples, not the website itself
- danescobar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6for being a lesson on color, that website sure was devoid of it
- Informativo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was always wondering if there exist such thing as objective and true colour wheel where correct colours stands in positions being complimentary, analogous and so on. It seems like every colour wheel gives more or less different hues and values for such positions!!
- emilng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you know anything about the design field, people are hired based on portfolios not degrees.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not design! It's decoration.
- codyfrisch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gah feels like going back 18 months in time to my "color theory" classes. So much fun those were.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@DougTanner
I guess just about enough to understand a joke. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1forget this crap. why was digg down? are there any enhancements?
- michaelpinto, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Or better yet maybe the "new professionalism" calls on us not to hire "designers" who don't have a degree in their field?
