- gcnaddict, on 08/22/2008, -2/+53Microsoft Research has some of the best projects out there, regardless of what people think of their mainstream products.
Obligatory links to MSR for those that want to see more:

http://research.microsoft.com/research/downloads/d ... - ButlerMonkey, on 08/22/2008, -0/+35Here's a video from the TED conference (2007) where Photosynth was demoed (skip to around 2:40, although the demo before is kind of interesting as well) - http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/blaise_aguera_y ...
I have to agree that as much as people love to bash Microsoft, they do have some interesting stuff going on. - rompom7, on 08/22/2008, -0/+20While I agree that Photosynth isn't new (I remember watching a TED talk about it a while ago).. I doubt you were playing with Photosynth 4 years before it was released.
- cordeezy, on 08/22/2008, -0/+17Imagine if they both worked together. A photosynthed street view.
- newslang, on 08/22/2008, -0/+16err...yes they can?
- CarlosReyes, on 08/22/2008, -2/+11I don't get what you mean. It runs fine on Firefox.
- bj1989, on 08/22/2008, -1/+10From their website: "Unfortunately, we're not cool enough to run on your OS yet. We really wish we had a version of Photosynth that worked cross platform, but for now it only runs on Windows.
Trust us, as soon as we have a Mac version ready, it will be up and available on our site."
No mention of linux but at least the good attitude is there. - jasdf, on 08/22/2008, -1/+9I want to see textures applied to the resulting 3d model.
- tcnarss, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8why hopefully? woo go microsoft
- rebotfc, on 08/22/2008, -3/+9The fact that all photosynths have to be a publicly shared sucks.
Is this really the way software will go, all our files stored on the internet (shared or otherwise) with no local file facility? - mediaphile, on 08/22/2008, -0/+6Well you don't necessarily have to take the pictures yourself, you just have to mine Flickr yourself. I'm sure someone will create an accompanying piece of software that will do the mining automatically so we can get back to the original vision of the software.
- Sickality, on 08/22/2008, -3/+9I wonder how long it's going to take before porn websites to start using this...
- digudown, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5Btw the comment above is a sarcasm.
- sloppychris, on 08/22/2008, -12/+17Linux version plz.
- caracter2, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5A very useful (and obvious) idea would be to implement some sort of algorithm that extracts the required frames from a video file. That way you won't have to take as long photographing your room... you can just sweep all the necessary angles quickly with your hand-held video camera. The software would interpolate everything and create a 3d model of the scene. That would be way better. If I'm not mistaken, this is exactly what another company did to retouch video footage (that video where the parking sign in front of the flowers was removed from the shot digitally).
You would have to be careful with motion blur of course... taking it slow, perhaps? - ommadawn, on 08/22/2008, -4/+8I hope they ask me first.
- Jektal, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Too long... too long...
- Zounas, on 08/23/2008, -0/+4"Seadragon was founded in 2003 and has developed technology that can quickly display large images on computers and handheld devices."
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstech ...
Seadragon is the underlying technology to for Photosynth. There was a Linux version for Seadragon before Microsoft bought them. Photosynth is the result of Seadragon and the group in University of Washington. So we can say they hardly innovated anything, only used others to integrate stuff into a OS dependant thing.
So you think debating and sharing thoughts is a downside in Digg? - JorgeGT, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Hit p
- ButlerMonkey, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4The thing is the team behind this had the idea of using Photosynth in conjunction with a service like Flickr, so that the collection photos comes from multiple users. So it isn't up to one person to take photos from every angle, but rather it would be something more organic.
- heavystone, on 08/22/2008, -1/+5Bladerunner is turning more and more into a documentary! This is cool stuff!
- TTSkipper, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Hold down Ctrl
- hwy9nightkid, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3its already been done, look at the TED talk two posts down
- sloppychris, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3How do you know this?
- kelmaster1, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4The research and planning they put into their software is intense. They'll spend a quarter million on deciding what to do with some minor function in excel.
- Myztry, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Now just to get the serial number from the scale behind the object in the scene...
- Zounas, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4Sorry if I spoke from the top of my head ;)
I meant the underlaying technology was developed by some group and Microsoft bought it and integrated with the Live Labs. It's been a long time since I read about it so it's all hazy by now. Technology is usually never OS dependant, so without Microsoft they could have made it available for everyone.
Altough I agree that Microsoft provides a lot to them, including integration, coders, testers and platforms, it ties them to Windows and who knows if they ever get out of that. This is always the downside of Microsoft's "innovations". - Zounas, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3@abuelos84: wrong. And without going into fanboyism here, every browser has their own good qualities (except one browser everyone knows) and people like different features. I've used Opera about since 2001 and I think it's the best for me.
- taotaobabe, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3I think this is much better: http://www.karikuukka.com/peking2008/100m/
- undershirt, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Anyone know how to switch to the "point cloud" view in Photosynth?
- joeanon, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2This project proves the world needs fiber to every house
- NyteStarNyne, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Dugg for his ending comment
- RSS14, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I was looking for this before I saw your comment. It's one of the better videos on TED.
- TTSkipper, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4This is one I created of the Statue of Liberty
http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=3d060987-f9cd- ... - cgreentx, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Consumer video quality pales in comparison to digital photo camera quality. I think the point of this is the resolution and quality which is completely defeated by regular consumer digital cameras, even compared to HD Video resolution.
- seshomarusamma, on 08/22/2008, -3/+5I like the fact that Photosynth site says :"Unfortunately, we're not cool enough to run on your OS"
- Zounas, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Did you even read the whole comment? He said Opera. So is it now so that diggers bury everything about Opera?
- bearcat8543, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3very cool concept. i liked apples VR viewer, but absolutely hated how you can tell its just pictures added to a 3d box. it can look pretty goofy at times.
- digudown, on 08/22/2008, -4/+6It is created by Microsoft, so it must be bad. I am sure Google and Apple have done it first.
- Vich, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Thanks David Pogue, you annoying, arrogant mac fanboy.
- estvir, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot.
The Mac and Linux plugin DO EXIST. The Mac one (Both 1.0 and 2.xx versions) are downloadable from several places including APPLE.COM,* and a ton of other sites. The Linux version isn't as complete as the Win/Mac ones and isn't as easily available if at all. Edit: Yes, yes it is.**

What this is is another example of idiots like you, not geeks and content producers, who should spend 2 seconds using a search engine before opening your ignorant mouths. - odyss3y, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2this is rad, this is how i want all my personal photos from vacations to be. i've done compositing with autopano pro but this would be pretty cool for sharing an immersive experience.

- Ev3nt372, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3If you look at Microsoft's Virtual Earth you will see that the 3D buildings are not individually rendered and textured like in Google Earth. Instead, these are calculated from angled sky views taken from different directions and converted into 3D models.
- macewan, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2Only if you have Windows - Mac & Linux plugins do not exist. Another example of why we, as geeks and content producers, need to stay away from Silverlight.
- stung47000, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Best I could find:

Sorry, no boobs yet. [damn] - lornali, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Microsoft can do anything even without Bill Gates
- stits, on 08/22/2008, -3/+4I think it's going to be interesting to see how it deals with color temperature/shading of all these millions(billions?) of photos. Or Photoshopped images; those would be the most fun. Authenticity verification might have to be a human process. Also, on the security side.......
- estvir, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1The Photosynth team was actually moved into the Virtual Earth team about a month or so back, I imagine we'll see something come of that eventually..
- JasonHaley, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Didn't you see the submission's thumbnail image? That's not a pink tunnel he's sticking his head through.
