Building A "Digg Clone" Using Pligg And VBulletin: Design & Development
mediacrumb.com — A small design/development firm takes on a big company's website re-design to show off their humorous stories about people being fired at their jobs. Re-designing the site to utilize a "digg" like interface, integrated login with VBulletin forums and a web 2.0 look & feel. If you're looking to work with Pligg or voting like "digg," read this story.

http://www.simplyfired.com/- OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I liked the idea behind this site, so I decided to create an account. At the end of the process I was greeted with a SQL error. Trying to register again said my username was in use, and I can't log in using the user and pass that I supplied. I don't think they'll get very popular if people can't register to vote on stories!
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just created an account and it worked perfectly fine.
- doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4as did i.
- djlosch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2wait, so something that takes an already made package, adds a few hacks and a new css template is newsworthy?
- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@djlosch: Where's yours?
Because "adding a few hacks" can be many hours of work, hours a team is paid for their services and a company pays out to people to do a job that was requested. But I guess your a multi-million dollar web designer that has a huge resume of awesome work. Oh wait, you probably just like to troll digg for responses. :) - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2seriously, even digg was made with only a couple thousand hundred dollars. Since when does it have be all from scratch? What sane developer would do that in this day and age.
- roromx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They dont have to put a credit to pligg or Meneame?
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Love the design and the fact that you used Pligg. We're always looking to grow and am glad that Pligg worked out for you in the end.
- MtnXfreerider, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3pligg = DEAD server with more than 100 people on at once :( I had high hopes but.. damn it is rough on the CPU/RAM usage!! Just watch the bottom load bar when you goto a pligg site.. it makes like 40 server requests for files and information.
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You should definitely check out the next release coming out in a few weeks. AshDigg has done a lot of improvements in that area.
- MixMastaKooz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yea! I had a good time modifying the Digital Nature template for my pligg website, sciencecentr.org. But the guys who did simply fired did a great of totally reformatting it: I just wish I could do that. The pligg forums are especially helpful if you want to start your own pligg site.
- SoupNazzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nice looking site.
- KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Very nice site! Wish I had the know how to create something like that.
- Naagy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2One digg is enough.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1No it's too much. Buried for using the non-term 'Web 2.0".
Way to ruin a good post.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1No it's too much. Buried for using the non-term 'Web 2.0".
- mgoblue5453, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2a good example of a site like this is: http://www.theintechpodcast.com/exposesite. It allows users to vote on "undiscovered" sites
- MtnXfreerider, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1..
Pligg is rough on the server.. so I don't recommend unless you have good dedicated hosting.
Also.. Vbulliten is expensive!!! Go for phpBB it has so many FREE plugins you can make it more powerful then VB anyway.

- NerdOfPrey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5"So for all intensive purposes, it’s really more of a new design than a re-design."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
To all intents and purposes, this is a mistranscription of a well-worn phrase.- doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You might be looking at a cached version of the site. It reads "intents and purposes" now. Just FYI.
- everybod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've seen so many digg clones, I'm not sure a site like this will really take off. I love the theme and domain, but how specific should a digg-clone get? Digg is great because you can post about anything. There are only so many stories about people getting fired that you can post.
- doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well that is really only one small component of the site. As the article said, the is really about jobs in general. Its run by the same great people that run simply hired search engine. There is the blog forum and job searches as well. I don't think the point of the site is to really be this HUGE thing. Just a nice little side oasis for Simply Hired people.
- FallenOmen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1More like Digg wannabe ..................
- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3most "wannabe" diggs tend to make story's about the tech field - this isn't even in the same realm. So more like "digg ui wannabe"
- xpose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Thats funny. I wrote a similar story about creating a digg-like site from scratch and no one gave a *****. Now this story that uses pre-made code makes it to the front page? How absolutely gay.
To piss you guys off even more, ill include a link to the site I made from scratch. (-999diggs)
http://www.celebritypwn.com- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would have given a care about it, it's a lot of work. However, you lost all respect with the cursing and mean remarks. Developers put in a lot of work, and should be rewarded. But they don't have to fling poo to get attention, sorry.
- xpose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1codemonkey. . give me a break. Judging from your impossibly high "popular ratio" on this site. . . your friends digg your stories so they get frontpaged (just like this one). THATS why I'm annoyed. As far as the site, Im sure they did a fine job with the code.
Good content means nothing. Good content + digg friends means something.
- uofmpike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Given that Pligg is licensed under the Affero GPL, shouldn't there be a link to download the Pligg source code modifications from SimplyFired?
- gnawph2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There was a comment on Mediacrumbs site about that, but but somebody removed it.
- bitmanip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Why not just use Digg? Do these sites think that they'll seriously be able to generate consistent traffic? Doubtful.
- thetazzbot, on 01/28/2008, -0/+0My beef with digg is not enough categories. I often have to mis-categorize my posts because Digg has such lame category options. So that begs the question, am I right for miscategorizing, or is Digg wrong for having narrow categories?
- mgoblue5453, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2a good example of a site like this is: http://www.theintechpodcast.com/exposesite. It allows users to vote on "undiscovered" sites
- chargerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it is interesting concept and funny to read some of the stories...for sure! :)
- Aaronoaxaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hrm had to try this out for myself
