- macabaret, on 06/10/2008, -5/+71It's pretty sweet, but it's no Comic Sans.
- tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -4/+43According to the jury, “PF Centro Pro is a type system, not just a type family. This large series of 40 fonts with 1519 characters each, is composed of 3 superfamilies (serif, sans and slab), includes true italics and supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. It is an almost ‘invisible’ typeface which has legibility as its main attribute and is ideal for a wide range of design works. It does not attract any unnecessary attention, but rather serves its purpose. A rare case of contemporary type family working across three alphabets, Centro Pro meets an ever-growing demand for such typefaces among pan-European companies and institutions”.
Congratulations to Parachute for this work and their deserved award. - PicklePower, on 06/10/2008, -1/+33Great, except none of us are gonna get it (legally). The price for the whole set? 653 Euros.
653 Euros = 1,009.67 U.S. dollars. - tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -5/+26Maybe because some diggers are just full of envy for other people's work and success.
- tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -0/+19Yeah! Seems that you re missing a lot here:
- I am sure you have never heard about the EDAwards.
- I am sure fonts for you are just letters.
- I am sure Digg is for you a place where real friends couldn't meet and congratulate for something big.
OK, man. We re losers! You won! - VAGDesign, on 06/10/2008, -3/+21Well Done! Bravo to Parachute.
- alwilson, on 06/11/2008, -1/+18That's because fonts have spiked to $140 a barrel.
- sockpuppets, on 06/10/2008, -1/+17Congratulations to VegaObscura3 for winning the Losing Comment of the Day Award!™
- nickmatsa, on 06/10/2008, -2/+16Each font contains 1519 glyphs? what are you writing with this typeface?
and how much does it costs? - tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -2/+16Could you, please, define spam?
Have you had the time to visit the story and the links?
Have you ever did something big like this?
Have you ever work for a design project for 1 or 2 years?
Come on! Digg is full of products, ideas and initiatives. If you don't like them, you can always not digg them.
But you can not offend other people's work by calling it spam. - keithburgun, on 06/10/2008, -6/+20download link or it didn't happen
- Shiftgood, on 06/10/2008, -0/+13If you are a font spotter, keep an eye out for Trajan Pro. Not sure where you live, but here in the US. its EVERYWHERE.... like... everywhere. In the fridge, on the side of busses, websites... I first noticed it in the movies a month ago when i was watching the previews... 4 .... all 4 movie titles used trajan pro. Sex in the City, Some Narnia movie, one with jackie Chan and jet li... and another... anyways... it seems like its being over used. So i wanted to get that notion out there so people start solving problems more creativity and design as a whole grows....
kindof like PF Centro... great font. - guydudeman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+13Vega, you might want to check this out before you start calling names:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typography - Stephenlk, on 06/10/2008, -3/+16For all of the Centro Pro fonts it costs an upwards of $2500
- til01, on 06/10/2008, -10/+22why is this spam?
- xSCREAMOx, on 06/10/2008, -7/+19seriously, just link to their/your type foundries website.
not ***** LIVEJOURNAL.
im a designer and saw the URL and thought this was a joke.
it does look like a nice typeface though.
edit*
here is the type foundries REAL URL. not some dumb asses ***** livejournal.
http://www.parachute.gr - protiek, on 06/11/2008, -1/+11Clearly a programmer.
- Ramble, on 06/10/2008, -0/+10Typography is a pretty big area in graphics and design.
- theosdesign, on 06/10/2008, -5/+15Well done Parachute. This award is good for Greek typographers, like Pano. As for the fools that call that spam, well... maybe they don't know how difficult is to draw a font or as Chari's says they are full of envy.
- instalol, on 06/10/2008, -11/+20Who gives a ***** if you can't download it for free?
- tsevis, on 06/11/2008, -0/+8It's a quite common practice in all the award organizations to use the current year number even if they - of course - judging last years productions.
You can see this common practice in ED Award and almost everywhere else.
I hope it's clear now. - greytfriend, on 06/11/2008, -1/+9How about an appreciation of art and effort?
- woofers07, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9a slab serif, serif, and sans serif in one font family? pretty impressive
- tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9You re right, mate.
But it's the inflation... :-(
Believe me, the european companies don't like this. - chuckerton, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7This is where I became aware of Trajan abuse:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=t87QKdOJNv8 - jlnr, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7Maybe because a designer needs to pay for his food and electricity too, even though a font is intangible and he doesn't physically lose anything if you copy it?
- tian2992, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7You might heard of a certain typeface called "Helvetica"… It is quite scary that is EVERYWHERE… /sarcasm
- til01, on 06/10/2008, -7/+13yea Vag it sure is a greattypeface
- Dracusis, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7What isn't wrong with Times?
- tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -4/+10Hi mate!
You re absolutely right!
But let me explain to you and to this community what's the stort behind this:
99 days ago I submitted this story:
http://digg.com/design/Champion_A_Guinness_record_ ...
It made it to the front page as it was a story about a typeface with more than 4280 glyphs. Take a look and if you re a designer you re understand why 1148 people dugg it.
(BTW, I am a member of Digg since Jan. 06. I have made just 11 submissions. Only one made it to the first page. No submission is linking to a page with advertising or else).
Unfortunately it seems that on Digg there are a lot of people full of envy and bad feelings for other people's work and success.
So, there were probably some diggers who report my submitted story about the PF Champion Script Pro as spam!
I honestly don't know if the digg staff is really checking the spam reports but they flagged Parachute Fonts blog as spam.
Last week, a colleague and friend of mine, Stavros Georgakopoulos (aka til01 on Digg) tried to submit two other stories about Parachute:
This was the first:
http://parachutefonts.blogspot.com/2008/05/centro- ...
And this was the second:
http://parachutefonts.blogspot.com/2008/05/parachu ...
If you have enough time to read more than 2.000 words about the whole PF Centro project, the complete making of and the story behind the ED award you could easily understand if these were quality stories or not.
My friend got a reply from Digg informing that his stories couldn't be submitted as Parachute's blog was flagged as spam by users.
He contacted Digg's support center to ask them about this.
They replied that Digg is a community base project and they don't want to change their mind.
He replied complaining again and what he god as an answer was just a link to the terms and conditions.
Therefore my friend decided to make this LiveJournal page and put the two stories just for digg.
Obviously this was not the best decision, but it was the only possibility for the stories to be on Digg.
----------
What is very sad is that there is no obvious definition of spam.
As people today use to be extremely fast in judging, they could discriminate others easily.
I am afraid that Digg and even worst some Diggers are reporting other people's submissions without even going to the URL. I am afraid that even this post, or this story would be reported as spam.
I don't care much as I am not living by social media or anything relative.
I love Digg and the Web 2.0 sites, because I can find content, friends and useful connections in all of these places. But what I am afraid of is that people in places like this are becoming more and more superficial.
Regards to all! - tsevis, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6Hi mate!
I am a designer. I have also designed some typefaces distributed by Parachute Fonts. I am not the owner or the manager of the company.
I am a colleague and a friend.
You can follow this link to see for your self:
http://www.parachute.gr/about.aspx?code=Designers
Who I am congratulating is Parachute and Panos Vassiliou, who owns the company, manages it, designed this typeface and received this award.
I hope it's clear now.
Regards! - rgodfrey, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7Actually, you buy the serif, sans and slab families separately. 1615 Euros less 10% volume discount = $2247.40
- louiebaur, on 06/10/2008, -4/+10That is pretty cool
- jpinsonault, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5Everyone should watch Helvetica. It's a good look into the passion that goes into typefacing
- tsevis, on 06/10/2008, -2/+7I see!
I like the font but I couldn't imagine Trajan Pro could be so famous in the US.
I am living in Greece, and I haven't visited the US since 2003. I am planning to come this summer for holidays. As a member of Parachute Fonts I would like to see PF Centro everywhere... :-)))
Regards - edwardmluk, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5I remember my youthful days when I thought Comic Sans was a good font...
- greytfriend, on 06/10/2008, -6/+10It's a really beautiful font. As someone who's done a tiny bit of design work, I really appreciate how important a font can be. Also, check out the link to the European Design Conference Awards to see the rest of the winners. There is some really special work to see.
http://www.ed-awards.com/index.php?option=com_easy ... - inactive, on 06/10/2008, -3/+7Awesome!
- alpha88, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5A lot of graphic designers (myself included) use Digg a lot. Hence top stories sometimes being about web or graphic design resources. Typefaces are a critical part of graphic design, so it makes sense that a story about the typeface of the year would make the front page.
- trevah, on 06/10/2008, -3/+7What's wrong with Times?

- HamNCheese, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5WOW! This is the most exciting thing to take the font industry by storm since.....Times New Roman!
All kidding aside, Congrats to the winner - looks like a nice usable font. :) - kingfoot, on 06/11/2008, -3/+7i dont get it. its only june. how can we have a best 08 typeface halfway through? shouldnt this be held in december?
- HamNCheese, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4Courier?? Real men use Bitstream Sans Mono.
- thedo0od, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4Lime green Courier New against black background. Nuff said.

Take a look and judge by yourself.
Chaparral Pro is a nice font too.
Regards - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -5/+8I'll have to agree. Paying for fonts is pretty ridiculous.
